所以猶太人迫害耶穌，因為他在安息日做了這些事。耶穌就回答他們：「我父做事直到如今，我也做事。」為了這緣故，猶太人越發想要殺他，因為他不但犯了安息日，而且稱神為他的父，把自己和神看為同等。

摩西不是傳了律法給你們嗎？你們卻沒有一個人守律法。為甚麼想要殺我呢？」

他就離開猶太，又回加利利去。

有人在這城迫害你們，就逃到另一城去。我實在告訴你們，以色列的城鎮，你們還沒有走遍，人子就要來臨。

可是，園戶看見他兒子，彼此說：『這是承受產業的。來，我們殺了他，佔他的產業！』

這是約翰的見證：猶太人從耶路撒冷差祭司和利未人到約翰那裏去問他：「你是誰？」

這是耶穌從猶太回到加利利後所行的第二個神蹟。

就在那時，有幾個法利賽人來對耶穌說：「離開這裏到別處去吧，因為希律想要殺你。」耶穌對他們說：「你們去告訴那個狐狸：『你看吧，今天明天我趕鬼治病，第三天我的事就成了。』雖然這樣，今天明天後天我必須向前走，因為先知是不可能在耶路撒冷之外被害的。

於是耶路撒冷人中有的說：「這個人不是他們想要殺的嗎？

我把在神那裏所聽見的真理告訴了你們，現在你們卻想要殺我；亞伯拉罕沒有做過這樣的事。

「我知道，你們是亞伯拉罕的後裔，你們卻想要殺我，因為你們心裏容不下我的道。

從那日起，他們就商議要殺耶穌。所以，耶穌不再公開在猶太人中走動，卻離開那裏，往靠近曠野的鄉間去，到了一座城，名叫以法蓮，就在那裏和門徒住下來。

於是，他們又要捉拿他，他卻從他們手中逃脫了。耶穌又往約旦河的東邊去，到了約翰起初施洗的地方，就住在那裏。
