He came to Jesus at night and said,“ Rabbi, we know that you are a teacher who has come from God. For no one could perform the signs you are doing if God were not with him.”

Some of the Pharisees said,“ This man is not from God, for he does not keep the Sabbath.” But others asked,“ How can a sinner perform such signs?” So they were divided. (niv)

The man answered,“ Now that is remarkable! You don’t know where he comes from, yet he opened my eyes.We know that God does not listen to sinners. He listens to the godly person who does his will.Nobody has ever heard of opening the eyes of a man born blind.If this man were not from God, he could do nothing.” (niv)

“ What are we going to do with these men?” they asked.“ Everyone living in Jerusalem knows they have performed a notable sign, and we cannot deny it.But to stop this thing from spreading any further among the people, we must warn them to speak no longer to anyone in this name.” (niv)

Then the chief priests and the Pharisees called a meeting of the Sanhedrin.“ What are we accomplishing?” they asked.“ Here is this man performing many signs.If we let him go on like this, everyone will believe in him, and then the Romans will come and take away both our temple and our nation.” (niv)

They sent their disciples to him along with the Herodians.“ Teacher,” they said,“ we know that you are a man of integrity and that you teach the way of God in accordance with the truth. You aren’t swayed by others, because you pay no attention to who they are. (niv)

Still, many in the crowd believed in him. They said,“ When the Messiah comes, will he perform more signs than this man?” (niv)

Even after Jesus had performed so many signs in their presence, they still would not believe in him. (niv)

Turning around, Jesus saw them following and asked,“ What do you want?” They said,“ Rabbi”( which means“ Teacher”),“ where are you staying?” (niv)

Jesus said to her,“ Mary.” She turned toward him and cried out in Aramaic,“ Rabboni!”( which means“ Teacher”). (niv)

They came to John and said to him,“ Rabbi, that man who was with you on the other side of the Jordan— the one you testified about— look, he is baptizing, and everyone is going to him.” (niv)

Yet at the same time many even among the leaders believed in him. But because of the Pharisees they would not openly acknowledge their faith for fear they would be put out of the synagogue;for they loved human praise more than praise from God. (niv)

If I had not done among them the works no one else did, they would not be guilty of sin. As it is, they have seen, and yet they have hated both me and my Father. (niv)

So Gideon took ten of his servants and did as the Lord told him. But because he was afraid of his family and the townspeople, he did it at night rather than in the daytime. (niv)

Nicodemus, who had gone to Jesus earlier and who was one of their own number, asked,“ Does our law condemn a man without first hearing him to find out what he has been doing?” (niv)

“ Hear me, you who know what is right, you people who have taken my instruction to heart: Do not fear the reproach of mere mortals or be terrified by their insults. (niv)

Later, Joseph of Arimathea asked Pilate for the body of Jesus. Now Joseph was a disciple of Jesus, but secretly because he feared the Jewish leaders. With Pilate’s permission, he came and took the body away.He was accompanied by Nicodemus, the man who earlier had visited Jesus at night. Nicodemus brought a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about seventy-five pounds. (niv)

They came to him and said,“ Teacher, we know that you are a man of integrity. You aren’t swayed by others, because you pay no attention to who they are; but you teach the way of God in accordance with the truth. Is it right to pay the imperial tax to Caesar or not? (niv)

And because of my chains, most of the brothers and sisters have become confident in the Lord and dare all the more to proclaim the gospel without fear. (niv)
