The third time he said to him,“ Simon son of John, do you love me?” Peter was hurt because Jesus asked him the third time,“ Do you love me?” He said,“ Lord, you know all things; you know that I love you.” Jesus said,“ Feed my sheep.

Jesus spoke to him a third time. He asked,“ Simon, son of John, do you love me?” Peter felt bad because Jesus asked him the third time,“ Do you love me?” He answered,“ Lord, you know all things. You know that I love you.” Jesus said,“ Feed my sheep.

He said to him the third time,“ Simon, son of Jonah, do you love Me?” Peter was grieved because He said to him the third time,“ Do you love Me?” And he said to Him,“ Lord, You know all things; You know that I love You.” Jesus said to him,“ Feed My sheep.

He saith unto him the third time, Simon, son of John, lovest thou me? Peter was grieved because he said unto him the third time, Lovest thou me? And he said unto him, Lord, thou knowest all things; thou knowest that I love thee. Jesus saith unto him, Feed my sheep.

He asked him the third time,“ Simon, son of John, do you love Me?” Peter was grieved that He asked him the third time,“ Do you love Me?” He said,“ Lord, You know everything! You know that I love You.”“ Feed My sheep,” Jesus said.

He saith unto him the third time, Simon,[ son] of Jonas, lovest thou me? Peter was grieved because he said unto him the third time, Lovest thou me? And he said unto him, Lord, thou knowest all things; thou knowest that I love thee. Jesus saith unto him, Feed my sheep.

Jesus said a third time,“ Simon, son of John, do you love me?” Peter was distressed that Jesus asked him a third time,“ Do you love me?” and said,“ Lord, you know everything. You know that I love you.” Jesus replied,“ Feed my sheep.

He said to him the third time,“ Simon, son of Jonah, do you have affection for me?” Peter was grieved because he asked him the third time,“ Do you have affection for me?” He said to him,“ Lord, you know everything. You know that I have affection for you.” Jesus said to him,“ Feed my sheep.

Now we know that you know all things and do not need anyone to question you; this is why we believe that you came from God.”

And immediately the rooster crowed a second time. And Peter remembered how Jesus had said to him,“ Before the rooster crows twice, you will deny me three times.” And he broke down and wept.

Jesus answered,“ Will you lay down your life for me? Truly, truly, I say to you, the rooster will not crow till you have denied me three times.

When they had finished breakfast, Jesus said to Simon Peter,“ Simon, son of John, do you love me more than these?” He said to him,“ Yes, Lord; you know that I love you.” He said to him,“ Feed my lambs.”He said to him a second time,“ Simon, son of John, do you love me?” He said to him,“ Yes, Lord; you know that I love you.” He said to him,“ Tend my sheep.”

and I will strike her children dead. And all the churches will know that I am he who searches mind and heart, and I will give to each of you according to your works.

For even if I made you grieve with my letter, I do not regret it— though I did regret it, for I see that that letter grieved you, though only for a while.As it is, I rejoice, not because you were grieved, but because you were grieved into repenting. For you felt a godly grief, so that you suffered no loss through us.For godly grief produces a repentance that leads to salvation without regret, whereas worldly grief produces death.For see what earnestness this godly grief has produced in you, but also what eagerness to clear yourselves, what indignation, what fear, what longing, what zeal, what punishment! At every point you have proved yourselves innocent in the matter.

For our boast is this, the testimony of our conscience, that we behaved in the world with simplicity and godly sincerity, not by earthly wisdom but by the grace of God, and supremely so toward you.

And the Lord turned and looked at Peter. And Peter remembered the saying of the Lord, how he had said to him,“ Before the rooster crows today, you will deny me three times.”And he went out and wept bitterly.

Then Jesus, knowing all that would happen to him, came forward and said to them,“ Whom do you seek?”

Does not he see my ways and number all my steps?“ If I have walked with falsehood and my foot has hastened to deceit;( Let me be weighed in a just balance, and let God know my integrity!)

This is now the second letter that I am writing to you, beloved. In both of them I am stirring up your sincere mind by way of reminder,

And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption.

for he does not afflict from his heart or grieve the children of men.

“ I the Lord search the heart and test the mind, to give every man according to his ways, according to the fruit of his deeds.”

I say this not as a command, but to prove by the earnestness of others that your love also is genuine.For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though he was rich, yet for your sake he became poor, so that you by his poverty might become rich.

“ The Mighty One, God, the Lord! The Mighty One, God, the Lord! He knows; and let Israel itself know! If it was in rebellion or in breach of faith against the Lord, do not spare us today

For the poor you always have with you, but you do not always have me.”

The Lord judges the peoples; judge me, O Lord, according to my righteousness and according to the integrity that is in me.Oh, let the evil of the wicked come to an end, and may you establish the righteous— you who test the minds and hearts, O righteous God!

For I wrote to you out of much affliction and anguish of heart and with many tears, not to cause you pain but to let you know the abundant love that I have for you.Now if anyone has caused pain, he has caused it not to me, but in some measure— not to put it too severely— to all of you.For such a one, this punishment by the majority is enough,so you should rather turn to forgive and comfort him, or he may be overwhelmed by excessive sorrow.

And they prayed and said,“ You, Lord, who know the hearts of all, show which one of these two you have chosen

And God, who knows the heart, bore witness to them, by giving them the Holy Spirit just as he did to us,

Therefore I intend always to remind you of these qualities, though you know them and are established in the truth that you have.I think it right, as long as I am in this body, to stir you up by way of reminder,since I know that the putting off of my body will be soon, as our Lord Jesus Christ made clear to me.And I will make every effort so that after my departure you may be able at any time to recall these things.

If you keep my commandments, you will abide in my love, just as I have kept my Father’s commandments and abide in his love.

And she said to Elijah,“ What have you against me, O man of God? You have come to me to bring my sin to remembrance and to cause the death of my son!”

You have tried my heart, you have visited me by night, you have tested me, and you will find nothing; I have purposed that my mouth will not transgress.

After a little while the bystanders came up and said to Peter,“ Certainly you too are one of them, for your accent betrays you.”Then he began to invoke a curse on himself and to swear,“ I do not know the man.” And immediately the rooster crowed.And Peter remembered the saying of Jesus,“ Before the rooster crows, you will deny me three times.” And he went out and wept bitterly.

By this we know love, that he laid down his life for us, and we ought to lay down our lives for the brothers.But if anyone has the world’s goods and sees his brother in need, yet closes his heart against him, how does God’s love abide in him?Little children, let us not love in word or talk but in deed and in truth.By this we shall know that we are of the truth and reassure our heart before him;for whenever our heart condemns us, God is greater than our heart, and he knows everything.Beloved, if our heart does not condemn us, we have confidence before God;and whatever we ask we receive from him, because we keep his commandments and do what pleases him.And this is his commandment, that we believe in the name of his Son Jesus Christ and love one another, just as he has commanded us.Whoever keeps his commandments abides in God, and God in him. And by this we know that he abides in us, by the Spirit whom he has given us.

I know, my God, that you test the heart and have pleasure in uprightness. In the uprightness of my heart I have freely offered all these things, and now I have seen your people, who are present here, offering freely and joyously to you.

Peter again denied it, and at once a rooster crowed.

But Jesus on his part did not entrust himself to them, because he knew all peopleand needed no one to bear witness about man, for he himself knew what was in man.

And the King will answer them,‘ Truly, I say to you, as you did it to one of the least of these my brothers, you did it to me.’

In this you rejoice, though now for a little while, if necessary, you have been grieved by various trials,

“ If you love me, you will keep my commandments.

Those whom I love I rebuke and discipline. So be earnest and repent. (niv)
