So Judas, having obtained the Roman cohort and officers from the chief priests and the Pharisees,* came there with lanterns, torches, and weapons.

Now they arrested Him and led Him away, and brought Him to the house of the high priest; but Peter was following at a distance.

Early in the morning the chief priests with the elders, scribes, and the entire Council immediately held a consultation; and they bound Jesus and led Him away, and turned Him over to Pilate.

While they were intent on killing him, a report came up to the commander of the Roman cohort that all Jerusalem was in confusion.

As Paul was about to be brought into the barracks, he* said to the commander,“ May I say something to you?” And he said,“ Do you know Greek?

For this man is a Roman.”The commander came and said to Paul,“ Tell me, are you a Roman?” And he said,“ Yes.”The commander answered,“ I acquired this citizenship for a large sum of money.” And Paul said,“ But I was actually born a citizen.”

Then the Philistines seized him and gouged out his eyes; and they brought him down to Gaza and restrained him with bronze chains, and he became a grinder in the prison.

And when a great dissension occurred, the commander was afraid that Paul would be torn to pieces by them, and he ordered the troops to go down and take him away from them by force, and bring him into the barracks.

So he put them in confinement in the house of the captain of the bodyguard, in the prison, the same place where Joseph was imprisoned.

Paul called one of the centurions to himself and said,“ Take this young man to the commander, for he has something to report to him.”So he took him and led him to the commander and* said,“ Paul the prisoner called me over to him and asked me to bring this young man to you because he has something to tell you.”The commander took him by the hand, and stepping aside, began to inquire of him privately,“ What is it that you have to report to me?”And he said,“ The Jews have agreed to ask you to bring Paul down tomorrow to the Council, as though they were going to inquire somewhat more thoroughly about him.So do not listen to them, for more than forty of them are in hiding to ambush him, and these men have put themselves under an oath not to eat or drink until they kill him; and now they are ready and waiting for assurance from you.”Then the commander let the young man go, instructing him,“ Tell no one that you have notified me of these things.”
