After he had said this, he went on to tell them,“ Our friend Lazarus has fallen asleep; but I am going there to wake him up.”

進而謂眾曰：『何為喧嚷悲哭、女未死、乃睡耳。』

又跪而呼曰：『主乎！勿將此罪歸於彼眾！』言畢即安然長眠。此固掃羅之所樂睹也。

『且退、女未死、第寢耳。』旁人嗤之。

夫吾人既信耶穌之死而復活、亦應信天主必引諸凡安寢於耶穌懷中者、與之俱來也。抑又有進者、按主之言、即同道中於主重臨之日、尚存人世者、亦必不能較已亡者早達天國。

蓋耶穌言其已死、而諸徒以為言其安眠也。

故曰：睡者其興、死者其起！惟彼基督、光明照爾。

基督之為吾人而死、亦欲吾人無論生前死後、與之共生而已。

我且示爾以神聖之秘密：吾人不必盡死、惟必須盡化。

諸塚自開、而已故諸聖、多有甦者。

姊若妹因遣人告耶穌曰：『主所寵者病矣！』

當朝乾夕惕孳孳為善、痛絕一切罪行。爾中頗有不識天主者焉！我之言此、爾等倘亦知恥乎。

夫人娶婦而為新壻、新壻之友立而待之、聞其音則洋洋而喜。今者吾樂之沛然充溢、亦復如是。

於是古經所載亞伯漢因信天主而成聖、且稱為「天主之友」云者、乃獲當然之補充、而厥義大備矣。

人之愛、莫大於為其友舍生；爾能遵行吾之所命、是吾友也。今而後予不稱爾為僕、僕不知其主之所為也。吾稱爾為友者、蓋凡吾所聞於吾父者、悉以示爾矣。

予切實語爾、時將屆矣、今即是也、死者當聞天主聖子之音、而聞之者咸得生焉。蓋父自具生命、賜子亦自具生命。以其為人子故、委以黜陟之權。慎勿以此為怪、蓋時有必至、凡在墓中者當聞厥音而興、善者復活以享永生、惡者復活以受天罰。

語畢乃大聲而呼曰：『賴柴魯興矣！』死者應聲而出、手足縛布、面裹巾。耶穌曰：『解之使行！』

而彼安寢於基督懷中者、悉已淪亡矣。
