They came to John and said to him,“ Rabbi, that man who was with you on the other side of the Jordan— the one you testified about— look, he is baptizing, and everyone is going to him.”To this John replied,“ A person can receive only what is given them from heaven.You yourselves can testify that I said,‘ I am not the Messiah but am sent ahead of him.’The bride belongs to the bridegroom. The friend who attends the bridegroom waits and listens for him, and is full of joy when he hears the bridegroom’s voice. That joy is mine, and it is now complete.He must become greater; I must become less.”The one who comes from above is above all; the one who is from the earth belongs to the earth, and speaks as one from the earth. The one who comes from heaven is above all.He testifies to what he has seen and heard, but no one accepts his testimony.Whoever has accepted it has certified that God is truthful.For the one whom God has sent speaks the words of God, for God gives the Spirit without limit.The Father loves the Son and has placed everything in his hands.Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life, but whoever rejects the Son will not see life, for God’s wrath remains on them. But what did you go out to see? A prophet? Yes, I tell you, and more than a prophet.This is the one about whom it is written:“‘ I will send my messenger ahead of you, who will prepare your way before you.’I tell you, among those born of women there is no one greater than John; yet the one who is least in the kingdom of God is greater than he.”( All the people, even the tax collectors, when they heard Jesus’ words, acknowledged that God’s way was right, because they had been baptized by John.But the Pharisees and the experts in the law rejected God’s purpose for themselves, because they had not been baptized by John.) Jesus went throughout Galilee, teaching in their synagogues, proclaiming the good news of the kingdom, and healing every disease and sickness among the people.News about him spread all over Syria, and people brought to him all who were ill with various diseases, those suffering severe pain, the demon-possessed, those having seizures, and the paralyzed; and he healed them.Large crowds from Galilee, the Decapolis, Jerusalem, Judea and the region across the Jordan followed him. and when they found him, they exclaimed:“ Everyone is looking for you!” (niv)

Meanwhile, when a crowd of many thousands had gathered, so that they were trampling on one another, Jesus began to speak first to his disciples, saying:“ Be on your guard against the yeast of the Pharisees, which is hypocrisy. (niv)

“ I baptize you with water for repentance. But after me comes one who is more powerful than I, whose sandals I am not worthy to carry. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire.His winnowing fork is in his hand, and he will clear his threshing floor, gathering his wheat into the barn and burning up the chaff with unquenchable fire.” (niv)

One day as Jesus was standing by the Lake of Gennesaret, the people were crowding around him and listening to the word of God. (niv)

What Jesus did here in Cana of Galilee was the first of the signs through which he revealed his glory; and his disciples believed in him. (niv)

He is the one who comes after me, the straps of whose sandals I am not worthy to untie.” (niv)

and he said to his attendants,“ This is John the Baptist; he has risen from the dead! That is why miraculous powers are at work in him.” (niv)
