Why are we sitting here? Gather together! Let us flee to the fortified cities and perish there! For the Lord our God has doomed us to perish and given us poisoned water to drink, because we have sinned against him.

The people say,“ Why are we just sitting here? Let us gather together inside the fortified cities. Let us at least die there fighting, since the LORD our God has condemned us to die. He has condemned us to drink the poison waters of judgment because we have sinned against him.

Therefore this is what the Lord Almighty says concerning the prophets:“ I will make them eat bitter food and drink poisoned water, because from the prophets of Jerusalem ungodliness has spread throughout the land.” (niv)

After the priest has had the woman stand before the Lord, he shall loosen her hair and place in her hands the reminder- offering, the grain offering for jealousy, while he himself holds the bitter water that brings a curse.Then the priest shall put the woman under oath and say to her,“ If no other man has had sexual relations with you and you have not gone astray and become impure while married to your husband, may this bitter water that brings a curse not harm you.But if you have gone astray while married to your husband and you have made yourself impure by having sexual relations with a man other than your husband”—here the priest is to put the woman under this curse—“ may the Lord cause you to become a curse among your people when he makes your womb miscarry and your abdomen swell.May this water that brings a curse enter your body so that your abdomen swells or your womb miscarries.”“‘ Then the woman is to say,“ Amen. So be it.”“‘ The priest is to write these curses on a scroll and then wash them off into the bitter water.He shall make the woman drink the bitter water that brings a curse, and this water that brings a curse and causes bitter suffering will enter her. Their vine comes from the vine of Sodom and from the fields of Gomorrah. Their grapes are filled with poison, and their clusters with bitterness. (niv)

Now there were four men with leprosy at the entrance of the city gate. They said to each other,“ Why stay here until we die?If we say,‘ We’ll go into the city’— the famine is there, and we will die. And if we stay here, we will die. So let’s go over to the camp of the Arameans and surrender. If they spare us, we live; if they kill us, then we die.” (niv)
