We have heard reports about them. And our hands can’t help us. We are suffering greatly. It’s like the pain of a woman having a baby.

We have heard the report of it; our hands fall helpless; anguish has taken hold of us, pain as of a woman in labor.

We have heard reports about the enemy, and we wring our hands in fright. Pangs of anguish have gripped us, like those of a woman in labor.

Damascus has become feeble, she has turned to flee and panic has gripped her; anguish and pain have seized her, pain like that of a woman in labor.

The king of Babylon has heard reports about them, and his hands hang limp. Anguish has gripped him, pain like that of a woman in labor.

Oh, my anguish, my anguish! I writhe in pain. Oh, the agony of my heart! My heart pounds within me, I cannot keep silent. What will you say when the Lord sets over you those you cultivated as your special allies? Will not pain grip you like that of a woman in labor?

As often as it comes it will carry you away; morning after morning, by day and by night, it will sweep through.” The understanding of this message will bring sheer terror.

Ask and see: Can a man bear children? Then why do I see every strong man with his hands on his stomach like a woman in labor, every face turned deathly pale?

“ Therefore groan, son of man! Groan before them with broken heart and bitter grief.And when they ask you,‘ Why are you groaning?’ you shall say,‘ Because of the news that is coming. Every heart will melt with fear and every hand go limp; every spirit will become faint and every leg will be wet with urine.’ It is coming! It will surely take place, declares the Sovereign Lord.”

Raise the signal to go to Zion! Flee for safety without delay! For I am bringing disaster from the north, even terrible destruction.”A lion has come out of his lair; a destroyer of nations has set out. He has left his place to lay waste your land. Your towns will lie in ruins without inhabitant.So put on sackcloth, lament and wail, for the fierce anger of the Lord has not turned away from us.“ In that day,” declares the Lord,“ the king and the officials will lose heart, the priests will be horrified, and the prophets will be appalled.”

Trembling seized them there, pain like that of a woman in labor.

when calamity overtakes you like a storm, when disaster sweeps over you like a whirlwind, when distress and trouble overwhelm you.“ Then they will call to me but I will not answer; they will look for me but will not find me,

Why do you now cry aloud— have you no king? Has your ruler perished, that pain seizes you like that of a woman in labor?Writhe in agony, Daughter Zion, like a woman in labor, for now you must leave the city to camp in the open field. You will go to Babylon; there you will be rescued. There the Lord will redeem you out of the hand of your enemies.
