Then Azariah son of Hoshaiah, Johanan son of Kareah, and other arrogant men said to Jeremiah,“ You are telling a lie! The LORD our God did not send you to tell us,‘ You must not go to Egypt and settle there.’

Azariah son of Hoshaiah and Johanan son of Kareah and all the arrogant men said to Jeremiah,“ You are lying! The Lord our God has not sent you to say,‘ You must not go to Egypt to settle there.’

After that, Azariah, the son of Hoshaiah, and Johanan, the son of Kareah, spoke to Jeremiah. And all the proud men joined them. They said,“ You are lying! The Lord our God hasn’t sent you to speak to us. He hasn’t told you to say,‘ You must not go to Egypt and make your homes there.’

Azariah the son of Hoshaiah and Johanan the son of Kareah and all the insolent men said to Jeremiah,“ You are telling a lie. The Lord our God did not send you to say,‘ Do not go to Egypt to live there,’

Azariah son of Hoshaiah and Johanan son of Kareah and all the other proud men said to Jeremiah,“ You lie! The Lord our God hasn’t forbidden us to go to Egypt!

then Azariah son of Hoshaiah, Johanan son of Kareah, and all the other arrogant men responded to Jeremiah,“ You are speaking a lie! The LORD our God has not sent you to say,‘ You must not go to Egypt to stay there for a while!’

Azariah the son of Hoshaiah, Johanan the son of Kareah, and all the arrogant men said to Jeremiah,“ You are telling a lie! The Lord our God has not sent you to say,‘ You are not to enter Egypt to reside there’;

that Azariah the son of Hoshaiah, Johanan the son of Kareah, and all the proud men spoke, saying to Jeremiah,“ You speak falsely! The Lord our God has not sent you to say,‘ Do not go to Egypt to dwell there.’

then spake Azariah the son of Hoshaiah, and Johanan the son of Kareah, and all the proud men, saying unto Jeremiah, Thou speakest falsely: Jehovah our God hath not sent thee to say, Ye shall not go into Egypt to sojourn there;

then Azariah son of Hoshaiah, Johanan son of Kareah, and all the other arrogant men responded to Jeremiah,“ You are speaking a lie! The Lord our God has not sent you to say,‘ You must not go to Egypt to live there for a while!’

Then spake Azariah the son of Hoshaiah, and Johanan the son of Kareah, and all the proud men, saying unto Jeremiah, Thou speakest falsely: the LORD our God hath not sent thee to say, Go not into Egypt to sojourn there:

then Azariah the son of Hoshaiah, Johanan the son of Kareah, and all the proud men spoke, saying to Jeremiah,“ You speak falsely. Yahweh our God has not sent you to say,‘ You shall not go into Egypt to live there;’

Ephraim’s leader is Samaria, and Samaria’s leader is the son of Remaliah. If your faith does not remain firm, then you will not remain secure.”

So all these officers and their troops came to Gedaliah at Mizpah. The officers who came were Ishmael son of Nethaniah, Johanan and Jonathan the sons of Kareah, Seraiah son of Tanhumeth, the sons of Ephai the Netophathite, and Jezaniah son of the Maacathite.

Then all the army officers, including Johanan son of Kareah and Jezaniah son of Hoshaiah and all the people of every class, went to the prophet Jeremiah.

He also rebelled against King Nebuchadnezzar, who had made him vow allegiance in the name of God. He was stubborn and obstinate, and refused to return to the LORD God of Israel.

“ These people have denied what the LORD says. They have said,‘ That is not so! No harm will come to us. We will not experience war and famine.The prophets will prove to be full of wind. The LORD has not spoken through them. So, let what they say happen to them.’”

You reprimand arrogant people. Those who stray from your commands are doomed.

The fear of the LORD is to hate evil; I hate arrogant pride and the evil way and perverse utterances.

But he gives greater grace. Therefore it says,“ God opposes the proud, but he gives grace to the humble.”

haughty eyes, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood,

Pride goes before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall.It is better to be lowly in spirit with the afflicted than to share the spoils with the proud.

Johanan son of Kareah and all the army officers who were with him led off all the people who had been left alive at Mizpah. They had rescued them from Ishmael son of Nethaniah after he killed Gedaliah son of Ahikam. They led off the men, women, children, soldiers, and court officials whom they had brought away from Gibeon.

You are still exalting yourself against my people by not releasing them.

Look, the one whose desires are not upright will faint from exhaustion, but the person of integrity will live because of his faithfulness.Indeed, wine will betray the proud, restless man! His appetite is as big as Sheol’s; like death, he is never satisfied. He gathers all the nations; he seizes all peoples.

The LORD abhors every arrogant person; rest assured that they will not go unpunished.

We have had our fill of the taunts of the self-assured, of the contempt of the proud.

May the LORD cut off all flattering lips, and the tongue that boasts!

All the people were aware of it, the people of Ephraim and those living in Samaria. Yet with pride and an arrogant attitude, they said,“ The bricks have fallen, but we will rebuild with chiseled stone; the sycamore fig trees have been cut down, but we will replace them with cedars.”

But Pharaoh said,“ Who is the LORD that I should obey him by releasing Israel? I do not know the LORD, and I will not release Israel!”

Then I said to the people of Judah,“ Listen and pay attention! Do not be arrogant! For the LORD has spoken.

Jeremiah finished telling all the people all these things the LORD their God had sent him to tell them.

In the same way, you who are younger, be subject to the elders. And all of you, clothe yourselves with humility toward one another, because God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.

Johanan and all the officers of the troops that had been hiding in the open country came to Gedaliah at Mizpah.They said to him,“ Are you at all aware that King Baalis of Ammon has sent Ishmael son of Nethaniah to kill you?” But Gedaliah son of Ahikam would not believe them.Then Johanan son of Kareah spoke privately to Gedaliah there at Mizpah,“ Let me go and kill Ishmael the son of Nethaniah before anyone knows about it. Otherwise he will kill you and all the Judeans who have rallied around you will be scattered. Then what remains of Judah will disappear.”But Gedaliah son of Ahikam said to Johanan son of Kareah,“ Do not do that because what you are saying about Ishmael is not true.”

The wicked man is so arrogant he always thinks,“ God won’t hold me accountable; he doesn’t care.”He is secure at all times. He has no regard for your commands; he disdains all his enemies.

lest I become satisfied and act deceptively and say,“ Who is the LORD?” Or lest I become poor and steal and demean the name of my God.
