However, before Jeremiah turned to go, Nebuzaradan added,“ Go back to Gedaliah son of Ahikam, the son of Shaphan, whom the king of Babylon has appointed over the towns of Judah, and live with him among the people, or go anywhere else you please.” Then the commander gave him provisions and a present and let him go. then the sword you fear will overtake you there, and the famine you dread will follow you into Egypt, and there you will die. (niv)

Azariah son of Hoshaiah and Johanan son of Kareah and all the arrogant men said to Jeremiah,“ You are lying! The Lord our God has not sent you to say,‘ You must not go to Egypt to settle there.’But Baruch son of Neriah is inciting you against us to hand us over to the Babylonians, so they may kill us or carry us into exile to Babylon.” (niv)

Do not be afraid of the king of Babylon, whom you now fear. Do not be afraid of him, declares the Lord, for I am with you and will save you and deliver you from his hands. (niv)

“ I, even I, am he who comforts you. Who are you that you fear mere mortals, human beings who are but grass,that you forget the Lord your Maker, who stretches out the heavens and who lays the foundations of the earth, that you live in constant terror every day because of the wrath of the oppressor, who is bent on destruction? For where is the wrath of the oppressor? (niv)

“ Whom have you so dreaded and feared that you have not been true to me, and have neither remembered me nor taken this to heart? Is it not because I have long been silent that you do not fear me? (niv)

You said,‘ No, we will flee on horses.’ Therefore you will flee! You said,‘ We will ride off on swift horses.’ Therefore your pursuers will be swift!A thousand will flee at the threat of one; at the threat of five you will all flee away, till you are left like a flagstaff on a mountaintop, like a banner on a hill.” (niv)

In the seventh month, however, Ishmael son of Nethaniah, the son of Elishama, who was of royal blood, came with ten men and assassinated Gedaliah and also the men of Judah and the Babylonians who were with him at Mizpah. (niv)
