躲在鄉村的猶大將領和士兵聽說巴比倫王委任亞希甘的兒子基大利管理猶大的窮人，就是沒有被擄到巴比倫的男女婦孺，便來到米斯巴見基大利。他們是尼探雅的兒子以實瑪利、加利亞的兒子約哈難和約拿單、單戶篾的兒子西萊雅、尼陀法人以斐的兒子們、瑪迦人耶撒尼亞及他們的屬下。

何沙雅的兒子亞撒利雅、加利亞的兒子約哈難和一些狂妄之徒對耶利米說：「你在撒謊！我們的上帝耶和華並沒有派你來告訴我們不可去埃及住。是尼利亞的兒子巴錄慫恿你反對我們，好叫我們落在迦勒底人手中，任由他們宰殺或擄到巴比倫。」於是，加利亞的兒子約哈難和眾將領及民眾都不聽從耶和華讓他們留在猶大的命令。加利亞的兒子約哈難和眾將領率領民眾下到埃及的答比匿。民眾中有流亡到各國又返回猶大的餘民和護衛長尼布撒拉旦留給沙番的孫子、亞希甘的兒子基大利管理的男女婦孺、公主以及耶利米先知和尼利亞的兒子巴錄。他們沒有聽從耶和華的命令。

願你的上帝耶和華指示我們該去哪裡，該做什麼。」

加利亞的兒子約哈難、何沙雅的兒子耶撒尼亞和其他將領及各階層的民眾前來，

尼探雅的兒子以實瑪利和同來的十個人突然起來拔刀殺了巴比倫王委任管理猶大的沙番的孫子、亞希甘的兒子基大利，還殺了所有在米斯巴與基大利在一起的猶大人和那裡的迦勒底士兵。

到了城中，以實瑪利和部下便屠殺他們，棄屍於蓄水池中。
