Some of our daughters have already been enslaved, but we are powerless, because our fields and our vineyards belong to others.”When I heard their outcry and these charges, I was very angry.I pondered them in my mind and then accused the nobles and officials. I told them,“ You are charging your own people interest!” So I called together a large meeting to deal with themand said:“ As far as possible, we have bought back our fellow Jews who were sold to the Gentiles. Now you are selling your own people, only for them to be sold back to us!” They kept quiet, because they could find nothing to say.So I continued,“ What you are doing is not right. Shouldn’t you walk in the fear of our God to avoid the reproach of our Gentile enemies?I and my brothers and my men are also lending the people money and grain. But let us stop charging interest!Give back to them immediately their fields, vineyards, olive groves and houses, and also the interest you are charging them— one percent of the money, grain, new wine and olive oil.”“ We will give it back,” they said.“ And we will not demand anything more from them. We will do as you say.” Then I summoned the priests and made the nobles and officials take an oath to do what they had promised.I also shook out the folds of my robe and said,“ In this way may God shake out of their house and possessions anyone who does not keep this promise. So may such a person be shaken out and emptied!” At this the whole assembly said,“ Amen,” and praised the Lord. And the people did as they had promised. (niv)

He read in their hearing all the words of the Book of the Covenant, which had been found in the temple of the Lord.The king stood by the pillar and renewed the covenant in the presence of the Lord— to follow the Lord and keep his commands, statutes and decrees with all his heart and all his soul, thus confirming the words of the covenant written in this book. Then all the people pledged themselves to the covenant. (niv)

“‘ If any of your fellow Israelites become poor and sell themselves to you, do not make them work as slaves.They are to be treated as hired workers or temporary residents among you; they are to work for you until the Year of Jubilee.Then they and their children are to be released, and they will go back to their own clans and to the property of their ancestors.Because the Israelites are my servants, whom I brought out of Egypt, they must not be sold as slaves.Do not rule over them ruthlessly, but fear your God.“‘ Your male and female slaves are to come from the nations around you; from them you may buy slaves.You may also buy some of the temporary residents living among you and members of their clans born in your country, and they will become your property.You can bequeath them to your children as inherited property and can make them slaves for life, but you must not rule over your fellow Israelites ruthlessly. If any of your people— Hebrew men or women— sell themselves to you and serve you six years, in the seventh year you must let them go free. (niv)

These were the priests.The Levites: Jeshua son of Azaniah, Binnui of the sons of Henadad, Kadmiel,and their associates: Shebaniah, Hodiah, Kelita, Pelaiah, Hanan,Mika, Rehob, Hashabiah,Zakkur, Sherebiah, Shebaniah,Hodiah, Bani and Beninu.The leaders of the people: Parosh, Pahath-Moab, Elam, Zattu, Bani,Bunni, Azgad, Bebai,Adonijah, Bigvai, Adin,Ater, Hezekiah, Azzur,Hodiah, Hashum, Bezai,Hariph, Anathoth, Nebai,Magpiash, Meshullam, Hezir,Meshezabel, Zadok, Jaddua,Pelatiah, Hanan, Anaiah,Hoshea, Hananiah, Hasshub,Hallohesh, Pilha, Shobek,Rehum, Hashabnah, Maaseiah,Ahiah, Hanan, Anan,Malluk, Harim and Baanah. They entered into a covenant to seek the Lord, the God of their ancestors, with all their heart and soul.All who would not seek the Lord, the God of Israel, were to be put to death, whether small or great, man or woman.They took an oath to the Lord with loud acclamation, with shouting and with trumpets and horns.All Judah rejoiced about the oath because they had sworn it wholeheartedly. As long as he lived, they did not fail to follow the Lord, the God of their ancestors. (niv)

“ For six years you are to sow your fields and harvest the crops,but during the seventh year let the land lie unplowed and unused. Then the poor among your people may get food from it, and the wild animals may eat what is left. Do the same with your vineyard and your olive grove. (niv)

“ If you buy a Hebrew servant, he is to serve you for six years. But in the seventh year, he shall go free, without paying anything.If he comes alone, he is to go free alone; but if he has a wife when he comes, she is to go with him.If his master gives him a wife and she bears him sons or daughters, the woman and her children shall belong to her master, and only the man shall go free. Now I intend to make a covenant with the Lord, the God of Israel, so that his fierce anger will turn away from us. (niv)

‘ Every seventh year each of you must free any fellow Hebrews who have sold themselves to you. After they have served you six years, you must let them go free.’ Your ancestors, however, did not listen to me or pay attention to me.Recently you repented and did what is right in my sight: Each of you proclaimed freedom to your own people. You even made a covenant before me in the house that bears my Name. (niv)
