蓋猶大王西底家囚之、曰、爾奚預言曰、耶和華云、我必付此邑於巴比倫王手、彼必取之、

蓋耶利米曾曰、耶和華云、我將付此城於巴比倫王、使彼取之、猶大王西底家不能脫於迦勒底人手、必解至巴比倫王前、詰問研究、曳至巴比倫、居彼、待我耶和華眷顧之、爾曹雖戰巴比倫軍、必不獲利。西底家王聞之、怒其言不利、故下之於獄。

蓋耶利米曾述預言曰、主如是云、我將付此邑於巴比倫王手、使彼取之、猶大王西底家不能脫於迦勒底人手、必付於巴比倫王手、面審詰問、面審詰問原文作其口彼此對言其目彼此相視必將西底家擄至巴比倫、居彼待我眷顧之、爾曹雖與迦勒底人戰、必不獲勝、此乃主所言、猶大王西底家遂問耶利米曰、爾何為述若是之預言、於是囚之於獄、

Zedekiah, the king of Judah, had made Jeremiah a prisoner there. Zedekiah had said to him,“ Why do you prophesy as you do? You say,‘ The Lord says,“ I am about to hand over this city to the king of Babylon. He will capture it.

King Zedekiah had put him there, asking why he kept giving this prophecy:“ This is what the Lord says:‘ I am about to hand this city over to the king of Babylon, and he will take it.

For Zedekiah king of Judah had shut him up, saying, Wherefore dost thou prophesy, and say, Thus saith the LORD, Behold, I will give this city into the hand of the king of Babylon, and he shall take it;

For King Zedekiah had confined Jeremiah there after he had reproved him for prophesying as he did. He had asked Jeremiah,“ Why do you keep prophesying these things? Why do you keep saying that the LORD says,‘ I will hand this city over to the king of Babylon? I will let him capture it.

For Zedekiah king of Judah had shut him up, saying,“ Why do you prophesy, and say,‘ Yahweh says,“ Behold, I will give this city into the hand of the king of Babylon, and he will take it;

“ Thus says the Lord, the God of Israel: Go and speak to Zedekiah king of Judah and say to him,‘ Thus says the Lord: Behold, I am giving this city into the hand of the king of Babylon, and he shall burn it with fire.You shall not escape from his hand but shall surely be captured and delivered into his hand. You shall see the king of Babylon eye to eye and speak with him face to face. And you shall go to Babylon.’

‘ Thus says the Lord, the God of Israel: Behold, I will turn back the weapons of war that are in your hands and with which you are fighting against the king of Babylon and against the Chaldeans who are besieging you outside the walls. And I will bring them together into the midst of this city.I myself will fight against you with outstretched hand and strong arm, in anger and in fury and in great wrath.And I will strike down the inhabitants of this city, both man and beast. They shall die of a great pestilence.Afterward, declares the Lord, I will give Zedekiah king of Judah and his servants and the people in this city who survive the pestilence, sword, and famine into the hand of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon and into the hand of their enemies, into the hand of those who seek their lives. He shall strike them down with the edge of the sword. He shall not pity them or spare them or have compassion.’

And when Jeremiah had finished speaking all that the Lord had commanded him to speak to all the people, then the priests and the prophets and all the people laid hold of him, saying,“ You shall die!Why have you prophesied in the name of the Lord, saying,‘ This house shall be like Shiloh, and this city shall be desolate, without inhabitant’?” And all the people gathered around Jeremiah in the house of the Lord.

Therefore, thus says the Lord: Behold, I am giving this city into the hands of the Chaldeans and into the hand of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, and he shall capture it.The Chaldeans who are fighting against this city shall come and set this city on fire and burn it, with the houses on whose roofs offerings have been made to Baal and drink offerings have been poured out to other gods, to provoke me to anger.

In the time of his distress he became yet more faithless to the Lord— this same King Ahaz.

“‘“ But if any nation or kingdom will not serve this Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, and put its neck under the yoke of the king of Babylon, I will punish that nation with the sword, with famine, and with pestilence, declares the Lord, until I have consumed it by his hand.

But the king of Egypt said to them,“ Moses and Aaron, why do you take the people away from their work? Get back to your burdens.”

In vain have I struck your children; they took no correction; your own sword devoured your prophets like a ravening lion.

Then the word of the Lord came to Jeremiah the prophet:“ Thus says the Lord, God of Israel: Thus shall you say to the king of Judah who sent you to me to inquire of me,‘ Behold, Pharaoh’s army that came to help you is about to return to Egypt, to its own land.And the Chaldeans shall come back and fight against this city. They shall capture it and burn it with fire.Thus says the Lord, Do not deceive yourselves, saying,“ The Chaldeans will surely go away from us,” for they will not go away.For even if you should defeat the whole army of Chaldeans who are fighting against you, and there remained of them only wounded men, every man in his tent, they would rise up and burn this city with fire.’”

and said to him,“ Tell us by what authority you do these things, or who it is that gave you this authority.”

And they stirred up the people and the elders and the scribes, and they came upon him and seized him and brought him before the council,and they set up false witnesses who said,“ This man never ceases to speak words against this holy place and the law,for we have heard him say that this Jesus of Nazareth will destroy this place and will change the customs that Moses delivered to us.”

and he said,“ May God do so to me and more also, if the head of Elisha the son of Shaphat remains on his shoulders today.”Elisha was sitting in his house, and the elders were sitting with him. Now the king had dispatched a man from his presence, but before the messenger arrived Elisha said to the elders,“ Do you see how this murderer has sent to take off my head? Look, when the messenger comes, shut the door and hold the door fast against him. Is not the sound of his master’s feet behind him?”

O Lord, do not your eyes look for truth? You have struck them down, but they felt no anguish; you have consumed them, but they refused to take correction. They have made their faces harder than rock; they have refused to repent.

Ebed-melech went from the king’s house and said to the king,

Then the officials said to the king,“ Let this man be put to death, for he is weakening the hands of the soldiers who are left in this city, and the hands of all the people, by speaking such words to them. For this man is not seeking the welfare of this people, but their harm.”

but never again prophesy at Bethel, for it is the king’s sanctuary, and it is a temple of the kingdom.”
