His daughter-in-law, the wife of Phinehas, was pregnant and near the time of delivery. When she heard the news that the ark of God had been captured and that her father-in-law and her husband were dead, she went into labor and gave birth, but was overcome by her labor pains.As she was dying, the women attending her said,“ Don’t despair; you have given birth to a son.” But she did not respond or pay any attention.She named the boy Ichabod, saying,“ The Glory has departed from Israel”— because of the capture of the ark of God and the deaths of her father-in-law and her husband.She said,“ The Glory has departed from Israel, for the ark of God has been captured.” (niv)

So I disgraced the dignitaries of your temple; I consigned Jacob to destruction and Israel to scorn. (niv)

Why arouse my anger with what your hands have made, burning incense to other gods in Egypt, where you have come to live? You will destroy yourselves and make yourselves a curse and an object of reproach among all the nations on earth.Have you forgotten the wickedness committed by your ancestors and by the kings and queens of Judah and the wickedness committed by you and your wives in the land of Judah and the streets of Jerusalem?To this day they have not humbled themselves or shown reverence, nor have they followed my law and the decrees I set before you and your ancestors.“ Therefore this is what the Lord Almighty, the God of Israel, says: I am determined to bring disaster on you and to destroy all Judah.I will take away the remnant of Judah who were determined to go to Egypt to settle there. They will all perish in Egypt; they will fall by the sword or die from famine. From the least to the greatest, they will die by sword or famine. They will become a curse and an object of horror, a curse and an object of reproach. (niv)

When the Lord could no longer endure your wicked actions and the detestable things you did, your land became a curse and a desolate waste without inhabitants, as it is today. (niv)

All Israel has transgressed your law and turned away, refusing to obey you.“ Therefore the curses and sworn judgments written in the Law of Moses, the servant of God, have been poured out on us, because we have sinned against you. (niv)

He will turn the hearts of the parents to their children, and the hearts of the children to their parents; or else I will come and strike the land with total destruction.” (niv)

Because of them, all the exiles from Judah who are in Babylon will use this curse:‘ May the Lord treat you like Zedekiah and Ahab, whom the king of Babylon burned in the fire.’ (niv)
