官長和眾百姓對祭司和先知說：「這人是不該死的，因為他奉耶和華－我們上帝的名向我們說話。」國中的長老就有幾個人起來，對聚集的眾百姓說：

然而，沙番的兒子亞希甘保護耶利米，不將他交在百姓手中，以免他們把他處死。

於是官長們對王說：「求你把這人處死，因他向城裏剩下的士兵和眾人說這樣的話，使他們的手發軟。這人不是為這百姓求平安，而是叫他們受災禍。」西底家王說：「看哪，他在你們手中，王不能反對你們所做的事。」他們就拿住耶利米，把他丟在王的兒子瑪基雅的井裏；那口井在護衛兵的院中。他們用繩子把耶利米縋下去，井裏沒有水，只有淤泥，耶利米就陷在淤泥中。

猶大的領袖、耶路撒冷的領袖、官員、祭司，和從牛犢切塊中經過的這地的眾百姓，

耶利米說：「你這是謊話，我並不是去投降迦勒底人。」伊利雅不聽耶利米的話，就逮捕他，把他帶到官長那裏。官長們惱怒耶利米，打了他，把他囚在約拿單文士的房屋中，因為他們把這屋子當作監牢。耶利米來到地牢，進入牢房，在那裏拘留多日。
