Raise a flag toward Zion! Take refuge, do not stand still, For I am bringing evil from the north, And great destruction.A lion has gone up from his thicket, And a destroyer of nations has set out; He has gone out from his place To make your land a waste. Your cities will be ruins, Without an inhabitant.

Then He cried out in my presence with a loud voice, saying,“ Come forward, you executioners of the city, each with his weapon of destruction in his hand.”And behold, six men came from the direction of the upper gate which faces north, each with his smashing weapon in his hand; and among them was one man clothed in linen with a scribe’s kit at his waist. And they came in and stood beside the bronze altar. Then the glory of the God of Israel ascended from the cherub on which it had been, to the threshold of the temple. And He called to the man clothed in linen at whose waist was the scribe’s kit.And the Lord said to him,“ Go through the midst of the city, through the midst of Jerusalem, and make a mark on the foreheads of the people who groan and sigh over all the abominations which are being committed in its midst.”But to the others He said in my presence,“ Go through the city after him and strike; do not let your eye have pity and do not spare.Utterly kill old men, young men, female virgins, little children, and women, but do not touch any person on whom is the mark; and you shall start from My sanctuary.” So they started with the elders who were before the temple. He also said to them,“ Defile the temple and fill the courtyards with the dead. Go out!” So they went out and struck and killed the people in the city.

For the fortified city is isolated, A homestead deserted and abandoned like the desert; There the calf will graze, And there it will lie down and feed on its branches. When its limbs are dry, they are broken off; Women come and make a fire with them, For they are not a people of discernment, Therefore their Maker will not have compassion on them. And their Creator will not be gracious to them.

Now what will you do in the day of punishment, And in the devastation which will come from afar? To whom will you flee for help? In spite of all this, His anger does not turn away And His hand is still stretched out.Woe to Assyria, the rod of My anger And the staff in whose hands is My indignation,I send it against a godless nation And commission it against the people of My fury To capture spoils and to seize plunder, And to trample them down like mud in the streets.Yet it does not so intend, Nor does it plan so in its heart, But rather it is its purpose to destroy And to eliminate many nations.
