I warned you when you felt secure, but you said,‘ I will not listen!’ This has been your way from your youth; you have not obeyed me.

For the children of Israel and the children of Judah have only done evil before me from their youth: for the children of Israel have only provoked me to anger with the work of their hands, saith the LORD.

For I spake not unto your fathers, nor commanded them in the day that I brought them out of the land of Egypt, concerning burnt offerings or sacrifices:But this thing commanded I them, saying, Obey my voice, and I will be your God, and ye shall be my people: and walk ye in all the ways that I have commanded you, that it may be well unto you.But they hearkened not, nor inclined their ear, but walked in the counsels[ and] in the imagination of their evil heart, and went backward, and not forward.Since the day that your fathers came forth out of the land of Egypt unto this day I have even sent unto you all my servants the prophets, daily rising up early and sending[ them]:Yet they hearkened not unto me, nor inclined their ear, but hardened their neck: they did worse than their fathers.Therefore thou shalt speak all these words unto them; but they will not hearken to thee: thou shalt also call unto them; but they will not answer thee.But thou shalt say unto them, This[ is] a nation that obeyeth not the voice of the LORD their God, nor receiveth correction: truth is perished, and is cut off from their mouth.

We lie down in our shame, and our confusion covereth us: for we have sinned against the LORD our God, we and our fathers, from our youth even unto this day, and have not obeyed the voice of the LORD our God.

And they committed whoredoms in Egypt; they committed whoredoms in their youth: there were their breasts pressed, and there they bruised the teats of their virginity.And the names of them[ were] Aholah the elder, and Aholibah her sister: and they were mine, and they bare sons and daughters. Thus[ were] their names; Samaria[ is] Aholah, and Jerusalem Aholibah.And Aholah played the harlot when she was mine; and she doted on her lovers, on the Assyrians[ her] neighbours,[ Which were] clothed with blue, captains and rulers, all of them desirable young men, horsemen riding upon horses.Thus she committed her whoredoms with them, with all them[ that were] the chosen men of Assyria, and with all on whom she doted: with all their idols she defiled herself.Neither left she her whoredoms[ brought] from Egypt: for in her youth they lay with her, and they bruised the breasts of her virginity, and poured their whoredom upon her.Wherefore I have delivered her into the hand of her lovers, into the hand of the Assyrians, upon whom she doted.These discovered her nakedness: they took her sons and her daughters, and slew her with the sword: and she became famous among women; for they had executed judgment upon her.And when her sister Aholibah saw[ this], she was more corrupt in her inordinate love than she, and in her whoredoms more than her sister in[ her] whoredoms.She doted upon the Assyrians[ her] neighbours, captains and rulers clothed most gorgeously, horsemen riding upon horses, all of them desirable young men.Then I saw that she was defiled,[ that] they[ took] both one way,And[ that] she increased her whoredoms: for when she saw men pourtrayed upon the wall, the images of the Chaldeans pourtrayed with vermilion,Girded with girdles upon their loins, exceeding in dyed attire upon their heads, all of them princes to look to, after the manner of the Babylonians of Chaldea, the land of their nativity:And as soon as she saw them with her eyes, she doted upon them, and sent messengers unto them into Chaldea.And the Babylonians came to her into the bed of love, and they defiled her with their whoredom, and she was polluted with them, and her mind was alienated from them.So she discovered her whoredoms, and discovered her nakedness: then my mind was alienated from her, like as my mind was alienated from her sister.Yet she multiplied her whoredoms, in calling to remembrance the days of her youth, wherein she had played the harlot in the land of Egypt.For she doted upon their paramours, whose flesh[ is as] the flesh of asses, and whose issue[ is like] the issue of horses.Thus thou calledst to remembrance the lewdness of thy youth, in bruising thy teats by the Egyptians for the paps of thy youth.Therefore, O Aholibah, thus saith the Lord GOD; Behold, I will raise up thy lovers against thee, from whom thy mind is alienated, and I will bring them against thee on every side;The Babylonians, and all the Chaldeans, Pekod, and Shoa, and Koa,[ and] all the Assyrians with them: all of them desirable young men, captains and rulers, great lords and renowned, all of them riding upon horses.And they shall come against thee with chariots, wagons, and wheels, and with an assembly of people,[ which] shall set against thee buckler and shield and helmet round about: and I will set judgment before them, and they shall judge thee according to their judgments.And I will set my jealousy against thee, and they shall deal furiously with thee: they shall take away thy nose and thine ears; and thy remnant shall fall by the sword: they shall take thy sons and thy daughters; and thy residue shall be devoured by the fire.They shall also strip thee out of thy clothes, and take away thy fair jewels.Thus will I make thy lewdness to cease from thee, and thy whoredom[ brought] from the land of Egypt: so that thou shalt not lift up thine eyes unto them, nor remember Egypt any more.For thus saith the Lord GOD; Behold, I will deliver thee into the hand[ of them] whom thou hatest, into the hand[ of them] from whom thy mind is alienated:And they shall deal with thee hatefully, and shall take away all thy labour, and shall leave thee naked and bare: and the nakedness of thy whoredoms shall be discovered, both thy lewdness and thy whoredoms.I will do these[ things] unto thee, because thou hast gone a whoring after the heathen,[ and] because thou art polluted with their idols.Thou hast walked in the way of thy sister; therefore will I give her cup into thine hand.Thus saith the Lord GOD; Thou shalt drink of thy sister’s cup deep and large: thou shalt be laughed to scorn and had in derision; it containeth much.Thou shalt be filled with drunkenness and sorrow, with the cup of astonishment and desolation, with the cup of thy sister Samaria.Thou shalt even drink it and suck[ it] out, and thou shalt break the sherds thereof, and pluck off thine own breasts: for I have spoken[ it], saith the Lord GOD.Therefore thus saith the Lord GOD; Because thou hast forgotten me, and cast me behind thy back, therefore bear thou also thy lewdness and thy whoredoms.The LORD said moreover unto me; Son of man, wilt thou judge Aholah and Aholibah? yea, declare unto them their abominations;That they have committed adultery, and blood[ is] in their hands, and with their idols have they committed adultery, and have also caused their sons, whom they bare unto me, to pass for them through[ the fire], to devour[ them].Moreover this they have done unto me: they have defiled my sanctuary in the same day, and have profaned my sabbaths.For when they had slain their children to their idols, then they came the same day into my sanctuary to profane it; and, lo, thus have they done in the midst of mine house.

Yea, thou heardest not; yea, thou knewest not; yea, from that time[ that] thine ear was not opened: for I knew that thou wouldest deal very treacherously, and wast called a transgressor from the womb.

Lest I be full, and deny[ thee], and say, Who[ is] the LORD? or lest I be poor, and steal, and take the name of my God[ in vain].

I have sent also unto you all my servants the prophets, rising up early and sending[ them], saying, Return ye now every man from his evil way, and amend your doings, and go not after other gods to serve them, and ye shall dwell in the land which I have given to you and to your fathers: but ye have not inclined your ear, nor hearkened unto me.

Thus saith the LORD, Stand ye in the ways, and see, and ask for the old paths, where[ is] the good way, and walk therein, and ye shall find rest for your souls. But they said, We will not walk[ therein].

But they rebelled against me, and would not hearken unto me: they did not every man cast away the abominations of their eyes, neither did they forsake the idols of Egypt: then I said, I will pour out my fury upon them, to accomplish my anger against them in the midst of the land of Egypt.

And the children of Israel did evil in the sight of the LORD, and served Baalim:And they forsook the LORD God of their fathers, which brought them out of the land of Egypt, and followed other gods, of the gods of the people that[ were] round about them, and bowed themselves unto them, and provoked the LORD to anger.And they forsook the LORD, and served Baal and Ashtaroth.And the anger of the LORD was hot against Israel, and he delivered them into the hands of spoilers that spoiled them, and he sold them into the hands of their enemies round about, so that they could not any longer stand before their enemies.Whithersoever they went out, the hand of the LORD was against them for evil, as the LORD had said, and as the LORD had sworn unto them: and they were greatly distressed.Nevertheless the LORD raised up judges, which delivered them out of the hand of those that spoiled them.And yet they would not hearken unto their judges, but they went a whoring after other gods, and bowed themselves unto them: they turned quickly out of the way which their fathers walked in, obeying the commandments of the LORD;[ but] they did not so.And when the LORD raised them up judges, then the LORD was with the judge, and delivered them out of the hand of their enemies all the days of the judge: for it repented the LORD because of their groanings by reason of them that oppressed them and vexed them.And it came to pass, when the judge was dead,[ that] they returned, and corrupted[ themselves] more than their fathers, in following other gods to serve them, and to bow down unto them; they ceased not from their own doings, nor from their stubborn way.

For I know thy rebellion, and thy stiff neck: behold, while I am yet alive with you this day, ye have been rebellious against the LORD; and how much more after my death?

But they mocked the messengers of God, and despised his words, and misused his prophets, until the wrath of the LORD arose against his people, till[ there was] no remedy.Therefore he brought upon them the king of the Chaldees, who slew their young men with the sword in the house of their sanctuary, and had no compassion upon young man or maiden, old man, or him that stooped for age: he gave[ them] all into his hand.

But they and our fathers dealt proudly, and hardened their necks, and hearkened not to thy commandments,And refused to obey, neither were mindful of thy wonders that thou didst among them; but hardened their necks, and in their rebellion appointed a captain to return to their bondage: but thou[ art] a God ready to pardon, gracious and merciful, slow to anger, and of great kindness, and forsookest them not.Yea, when they had made them a molten calf, and said, This[ is] thy God that brought thee up out of Egypt, and had wrought great provocations;Yet thou in thy manifold mercies forsookest them not in the wilderness: the pillar of the cloud departed not from them by day, to lead them in the way; neither the pillar of fire by night, to shew them light, and the way wherein they should go.Thou gavest also thy good spirit to instruct them, and withheldest not thy manna from their mouth, and gavest them water for their thirst.Yea, forty years didst thou sustain them in the wilderness,[ so that] they lacked nothing; their clothes waxed not old, and their feet swelled not.Moreover thou gavest them kingdoms and nations, and didst divide them into corners: so they possessed the land of Sihon, and the land of the king of Heshbon, and the land of Og king of Bashan.Their children also multipliedst thou as the stars of heaven, and broughtest them into the land, concerning which thou hadst promised to their fathers, that they should go in to possess[ it].So the children went in and possessed the land, and thou subduedst before them the inhabitants of the land, the Canaanites, and gavest them into their hands, with their kings, and the people of the land, that they might do with them as they would.And they took strong cities, and a fat land, and possessed houses full of all goods, wells digged, vineyards, and oliveyards, and fruit trees in abundance: so they did eat, and were filled, and became fat, and delighted themselves in thy great goodness.Nevertheless they were disobedient, and rebelled against thee, and cast thy law behind their backs, and slew thy prophets which testified against them to turn them to thee, and they wrought great provocations.Therefore thou deliveredst them into the hand of their enemies, who vexed them: and in the time of their trouble, when they cried unto thee, thou heardest[ them] from heaven; and according to thy manifold mercies thou gavest them saviours, who saved them out of the hand of their enemies.But after they had rest, they did evil again before thee: therefore leftest thou them in the hand of their enemies, so that they had the dominion over them: yet when they returned, and cried unto thee, thou heardest[ them] from heaven; and many times didst thou deliver them according to thy mercies;And testifiedst against them, that thou mightest bring them again unto thy law: yet they dealt proudly, and hearkened not unto thy commandments, but sinned against thy judgments,( which if a man do, he shall live in them;) and withdrew the shoulder, and hardened their neck, and would not hear.Yet many years didst thou forbear them, and testifiedst against them by thy spirit in thy prophets: yet would they not give ear: therefore gavest thou them into the hand of the people of the lands.Nevertheless for thy great mercies’ sake thou didst not utterly consume them, nor forsake them; for thou[ art] a gracious and merciful God.Now therefore, our God, the great, the mighty, and the terrible God, who keepest covenant and mercy, let not all the trouble seem little before thee, that hath come upon us, on our kings, on our princes, and on our priests, and on our prophets, and on our fathers, and on all thy people, since the time of the kings of Assyria unto this day.Howbeit thou[ art] just in all that is brought upon us; for thou hast done right, but we have done wickedly:Neither have our kings, our princes, our priests, nor our fathers, kept thy law, nor hearkened unto thy commandments and thy testimonies, wherewith thou didst testify against them.For they have not served thee in their kingdom, and in thy great goodness that thou gavest them, and in the large and fat land which thou gavest before them, neither turned they from their wicked works.Behold, we[ are] servants this day, and[ for] the land that thou gavest unto our fathers to eat the fruit thereof and the good thereof, behold, we[ are] servants in it:And it yieldeth much increase unto the kings whom thou hast set over us because of our sins: also they have dominion over our bodies, and over our cattle, at their pleasure, and we[ are] in great distress.

Ye have been rebellious against the LORD from the day that I knew you.

So the king sent Jehudi to fetch the roll: and he took it out of Elishama the scribe’s chamber. And Jehudi read it in the ears of the king, and in the ears of all the princes which stood beside the king.Now the king sat in the winterhouse in the ninth month: and[ there was a fire] on the hearth burning before him.And it came to pass,[ that] when Jehudi had read three or four leaves, he cut it with the penknife, and cast[ it] into the fire that[ was] on the hearth, until all the roll was consumed in the fire that[ was] on the hearth.Yet they were not afraid, nor rent their garments,[ neither] the king, nor any of his servants that heard all these words.Nevertheless Elnathan and Delaiah and Gemariah had made intercession to the king that he would not burn the roll: but he would not hear them.But the king commanded Jerahmeel the son of Hammelech, and Seraiah the son of Azriel, and Shelemiah the son of Abdeel, to take Baruch the scribe and Jeremiah the prophet: but the LORD hid them.

Notwithstanding the children rebelled against me: they walked not in my statutes, neither kept my judgments to do them, which[ if] a man do, he shall even live in them; they polluted my sabbaths: then I said, I would pour out my fury upon them, to accomplish my anger against them in the wilderness.

But Jeshurun waxed fat, and kicked: thou art waxen fat, thou art grown thick, thou art covered[ with fatness]; then he forsook God[ which] made him, and lightly esteemed the Rock of his salvation.They provoked him to jealousy with strange[ gods], with abominations provoked they him to anger.They sacrificed unto devils, not to God; to gods whom they knew not, to new[ gods that] came newly up, whom your fathers feared not.Of the Rock[ that] begat thee thou art unmindful, and hast forgotten God that formed thee.And when the LORD saw[ it], he abhorred[ them], because of the provoking of his sons, and of his daughters.And he said, I will hide my face from them, I will see what their end[ shall be]: for they[ are] a very froward generation, children in whom[ is] no faith.

[ For] when I had brought them into the land,[ for] the which I lifted up mine hand to give it to them, then they saw every high hill, and all the thick trees, and they offered there their sacrifices, and there they presented the provocation of their offering: there also they made their sweet savour, and poured out there their drink offerings.

Remember,[ and] forget not, how thou provokedst the LORD thy God to wrath in the wilderness: from the day that thou didst depart out of the land of Egypt, until ye came unto this place, ye have been rebellious against the LORD.

And the LORD spake to Manasseh, and to his people: but they would not hearken.

O generation, see ye the word of the LORD. Have I been a wilderness unto Israel? a land of darkness? wherefore say my people, We are lords; we will come no more unto thee?

But the house of Israel rebelled against me in the wilderness: they walked not in my statutes, and they despised my judgments, which[ if] a man do, he shall even live in them; and my sabbaths they greatly polluted: then I said, I would pour out my fury upon them in the wilderness, to consume them.

We have sinned with our fathers, we have committed iniquity, we have done wickedly.Our fathers understood not thy wonders in Egypt; they remembered not the multitude of thy mercies; but provoked[ him] at the sea,[ even] at the Red sea.Nevertheless he saved them for his name’s sake, that he might make his mighty power to be known.He rebuked the Red sea also, and it was dried up: so he led them through the depths, as through the wilderness.And he saved them from the hand of him that hated[ them], and redeemed them from the hand of the enemy.And the waters covered their enemies: there was not one of them left.Then believed they his words; they sang his praise.They soon forgat his works; they waited not for his counsel:But lusted exceedingly in the wilderness, and tempted God in the desert.And he gave them their request; but sent leanness into their soul.They envied Moses also in the camp,[ and] Aaron the saint of the LORD.The earth opened and swallowed up Dathan, and covered the company of Abiram.And a fire was kindled in their company; the flame burned up the wicked.They made a calf in Horeb, and worshipped the molten image.Thus they changed their glory into the similitude of an ox that eateth grass.They forgat God their saviour, which had done great things in Egypt;Wondrous works in the land of Ham,[ and] terrible things by the Red sea.Therefore he said that he would destroy them, had not Moses his chosen stood before him in the breach, to turn away his wrath, lest he should destroy[ them].Yea, they despised the pleasant land, they believed not his word:But murmured in their tents,[ and] hearkened not unto the voice of the LORD.Therefore he lifted up his hand against them, to overthrow them in the wilderness:To overthrow their seed also among the nations, and to scatter them in the lands.They joined themselves also unto Baalpeor, and ate the sacrifices of the dead.Thus they provoked[ him] to anger with their inventions: and the plague brake in upon them.Then stood up Phinehas, and executed judgment: and[ so] the plague was stayed.And that was counted unto him for righteousness unto all generations for evermore.They angered[ him] also at the waters of strife, so that it went ill with Moses for their sakes:Because they provoked his spirit, so that he spake unadvisedly with his lips.They did not destroy the nations, concerning whom the LORD commanded them:But were mingled among the heathen, and learned their works.And they served their idols: which were a snare unto them.Yea, they sacrificed their sons and their daughters unto devils,And shed innocent blood,[ even] the blood of their sons and of their daughters, whom they sacrificed unto the idols of Canaan: and the land was polluted with blood.Thus were they defiled with their own works, and went a whoring with their own inventions.Therefore was the wrath of the LORD kindled against his people, insomuch that he abhorred his own inheritance.And he gave them into the hand of the heathen; and they that hated them ruled over them.Their enemies also oppressed them, and they were brought into subjection under their hand.Many times did he deliver them; but they provoked[ him] with their counsel, and were brought low for their iniquity.Nevertheless he regarded their affliction, when he heard their cry:And he remembered for them his covenant, and repented according to the multitude of his mercies.He made them also to be pitied of all those that carried them captives.Save us, O LORD our God, and gather us from among the heathen, to give thanks unto thy holy name,[ and] to triumph in thy praise.Blessed[ be] the LORD God of Israel from everlasting to everlasting: and let all the people say, Amen. Praise ye the LORD.
