For I hear many whispering. Terror is on every side!“ Denounce him! Let us denounce him!” say all my close friends, watching for my fall.“ Perhaps he will be deceived; then we can overcome him and take our revenge on him.”

I have heard the many rumors about me. They call me“ The Man Who Lives in Terror.” They threaten,“ If you say anything, we will report it.” Even my old friends are watching me, waiting for a fatal slip.“ He will trap himself,” they say,“ and then we will get our revenge on him.”

For I heard many mocking:“ Fear on every side!”“ Report,” they say,“ and we will report it!” All my acquaintances watched for my stumbling, saying,“ Perhaps he can be induced; Then we will prevail against him, And we will take our revenge on him.”

I have heard the gossip of many; terror is on every side. When they conspired against me, they plotted to take my life.

Even my friend in whom I trusted, one who ate my bread, has raised his heel against me.

those who, with their speech, accuse a person of wrongdoing, who set a trap for the one mediating at the city gate and without cause deprive the righteous of justice.

So Jezebel sent a messenger to Elijah, saying,“ May the gods punish me and do so severely if I don’t make your life like the life of one of them by this time tomorrow!”

So come, let’s confer together.Then I replied to him,“ There is nothing to these rumors you are spreading; you are inventing them in your own mind.”For they were all trying to intimidate us, saying,“ They will drop their hands from the work, and it will never be finished.” But now, my God, strengthen my hands.I went to the house of Shemaiah son of Delaiah, son of Mehetabel, who was restricted to his house. He said: Let’s meet at the house of God, inside the temple. Let’s shut the temple doors because they’re coming to kill you. They’re coming to kill you tonight!But I said,“ Should a man like me run away? How can someone like me enter the temple and live? I will not go.”I realized that God had not sent him, because of the prophecy he spoke against me. Tobiah and Sanballat had hired him.He was hired, so that I would be intimidated, do as he suggested, sin, and get a bad reputation, in order that they could discredit me.

When he left there, the scribes and the Pharisees began to oppose him fiercely and to cross-examine him about many things;they were lying in wait for him to trap him in something he said.

Don’t go out to the fields; don’t walk on the road. For the enemy has a sword; terror is on every side.

When it was morning, the Jews formed a conspiracy and bound themselves under a curse not to eat or drink until they had killed Paul.There were more than forty who had formed this plot.These men went to the chief priests and elders and said,“ We have bound ourselves under a solemn curse that we won’t eat anything until we have killed Paul.So now you, along with the Sanhedrin, make a request to the commander that he bring him down to you as if you were going to investigate his case more thoroughly. But, before he gets near, we are ready to kill him.”

Then they secretly persuaded some men to say,“ We heard him speaking blasphemous words against Moses and God.”They stirred up the people, the elders, and the scribes; so they came, seized him, and took him to the Sanhedrin.They also presented false witnesses who said,“ This man never stops speaking against this holy place and the law.For we heard him say that this Jesus of Nazareth will destroy this place and change the customs that Moses handed down to us.”And all who were sitting in the Sanhedrin looked intently at him and saw that his face was like the face of an angel.

The chief priests and the whole Sanhedrin were looking for false testimony against Jesus so that they could put him to death,but they could not find any, even though many false witnesses came forward. Finally, two who came forward

and say,‘ This is what the king says: Put this guy in prison and feed him only a little bread and water until I come back safely.’”

When they heard this, they were enraged and wanted to kill them.

They watched closely and sent spies who pretended to be righteous, so that they could catch him in what he said, to hand him over to the governor’s rule and authority.

The king of Israel said to Jehoshaphat,“ There is still one man who can inquire of the LORD, but I hate him because he never prophesies good about me, but only disaster. He is Micaiah son of Imlah.”“ The king shouldn’t say that!” Jehoshaphat replied.

So Herodias held a grudge against him and wanted to kill him. But she could not,because Herod feared John and protected him, knowing he was a righteous and holy man. When Herod heard him he would be very perplexed, and yet he liked to listen to him.An opportune time came on his birthday, when Herod gave a banquet for his nobles, military commanders, and the leading men of Galilee.When Herodias’s own daughter came in and danced, she pleased Herod and his guests. The king said to the girl,“ Ask me whatever you want, and I’ll give it to you.”He promised her with an oath:“ Whatever you ask me I will give you, up to half my kingdom.”She went out and said to her mother,“ What should I ask for?”“ John the Baptist’s head,” she said.At once she hurried to the king and said,“ I want you to give me John the Baptist’s head on a platter immediately.”Although the king was deeply distressed, because of his oaths and the guests he did not want to refuse her.The king immediately sent for an executioner and commanded him to bring John’s head. So he went and beheaded him in prison,brought his head on a platter, and gave it to the girl. Then the girl gave it to her mother.

Ahab said to Elijah,“ So, my enemy, you’ve found me, have you?” He replied,“ I have found you because you devoted yourself to do what is evil in the LORD’s sight.

From now on, five in one household will be divided: three against two, and two against three.They will be divided, father against son, son against father, mother against daughter, daughter against mother, mother-in-law against her daughter-in-law, and daughter-in-law against mother-in-law.”

When they heard these things, they were enraged and gnashed their teeth at him.

Neither can they prove the charges they are now making against me.

Five days later Ananias the high priest came down with some elders and a lawyer named Tertullus. These men presented their case against Paul to the governor.When Paul was called in, Tertullus began to accuse him and said,“ We enjoy great peace because of you, and reforms are taking place for the benefit of this nation because of your foresight.We acknowledge this in every way and everywhere, most excellent Felix, with utmost gratitude.But, so that I will not burden you any further, I request that you would be kind enough to give us a brief hearing.For we have found this man to be a plague, an agitator among all the Jews throughout the Roman world, and a ringleader of the sect of the Nazarenes.He even tried to desecrate the temple, and so we apprehended him. By examining him yourself you will be able to discern the truth about these charges we are bringing against him.”

I am surrounded by lions; I lie down among devouring lions— people whose teeth are spears and arrows, whose tongues are sharp swords.
