Alas, my mother, that you gave me birth, a man with whom the whole land strives and contends! I have neither lent nor borrowed, yet everyone curses me.

My mother, I wish I had never been born! The whole land opposes me. They fight against me. I haven’t made loans to anyone. And I haven’t borrowed anything. But everyone curses me anyway.

Then I said,“ What sorrow is mine, my mother. Oh, that I had died at birth! I am hated everywhere I go. I am neither a lender who threatens to foreclose nor a borrower who refuses to pay— yet they all curse me.”

If thou lend money to[ any of] my people[ that is] poor by thee, thou shalt not be to him as an usurer, neither shalt thou lay upon him usury.

O LORD, thou hast deceived me, and I was deceived: thou art stronger than I, and hast prevailed: I am in derision daily, every one mocketh me.For since I spake, I cried out, I cried violence and spoil; because the word of the LORD was made a reproach unto me, and a derision, daily.

For, behold, I have made thee this day a defenced city, and an iron pillar, and brasen walls against the whole land, against the kings of Judah, against the princes thereof, against the priests thereof, and against the people of the land.And they shall fight against thee; but they shall not prevail against thee; for I[ am] with thee, saith the LORD, to deliver thee.

[ He that] putteth not out his money to usury, nor taketh reward against the innocent. He that doeth these[ things] shall never be moved.

And I will make thee unto this people a fenced brasen wall: and they shall fight against thee, but they shall not prevail against thee: for I[ am] with thee to save thee and to deliver thee, saith the LORD.

After this opened Job his mouth, and cursed his day.And Job spake, and said,Let the day perish wherein I was born, and the night[ in which] it was said, There is a man child conceived.Let that day be darkness; let not God regard it from above, neither let the light shine upon it.Let darkness and the shadow of death stain it; let a cloud dwell upon it; let the blackness of the day terrify it.As[ for] that night, let darkness seize upon it; let it not be joined unto the days of the year, let it not come into the number of the months.Lo, let that night be solitary, let no joyful voice come therein.Let them curse it that curse the day, who are ready to raise up their mourning.Let the stars of the twilight thereof be dark; let it look for light, but[ have] none; neither let it see the dawning of the day:Because it shut not up the doors of my[ mother’s] womb, nor hid sorrow from mine eyes.Why died I not from the womb?[ why] did I[ not] give up the ghost when I came out of the belly?Why did the knees prevent me? or why the breasts that I should suck?For now should I have lain still and been quiet, I should have slept: then had I been at rest,With kings and counsellors of the earth, which built desolate places for themselves;Or with princes that had gold, who filled their houses with silver:Or as an hidden untimely birth I had not been; as infants[ which] never saw light.There the wicked cease[ from] troubling; and there the weary be at rest.[ There] the prisoners rest together; they hear not the voice of the oppressor.The small and great are there; and the servant[ is] free from his master.Wherefore is light given to him that is in misery, and life unto the bitter[ in] soul;Which long for death, but it[ cometh] not; and dig for it more than for hid treasures;Which rejoice exceedingly,[ and] are glad, when they can find the grave?[ Why is light given] to a man whose way is hid, and whom God hath hedged in?For my sighing cometh before I eat, and my roarings are poured out like the waters.For the thing which I greatly feared is come upon me, and that which I was afraid of is come unto me.I was not in safety, neither had I rest, neither was I quiet; yet trouble came.

And thou, son of man, be not afraid of them, neither be afraid of their words, though briers and thorns[ be] with thee, and thou dost dwell among scorpions: be not afraid of their words, nor be dismayed at their looks, though they[ be] a rebellious house.And thou shalt speak my words unto them, whether they will hear, or whether they will forbear: for they[ are] most rebellious.

And brought them to the magistrates, saying, These men, being Jews, do exceedingly trouble our city,And teach customs, which are not lawful for us to receive, neither to observe, being Romans.And the multitude rose up together against them: and the magistrates rent off their clothes, and commanded to beat[ them].

As the bird by wandering, as the swallow by flying, so the curse causeless shall not come.

And the king of Israel said unto Jehoshaphat,[ There is] yet one man, Micaiah the son of Imlah, by whom we may enquire of the LORD: but I hate him; for he doth not prophesy good concerning me, but evil. And Jehoshaphat said, Let not the king say so.

And Ahab said to Elijah, Hast thou found me, O mine enemy? And he answered, I have found[ thee]: because thou hast sold thyself to work evil in the sight of the LORD.

And it came to pass, when Ahab saw Elijah, that Ahab said unto him,[ Art] thou he that troubleth Israel?And he answered, I have not troubled Israel; but thou, and thy father’s house, in that ye have forsaken the commandments of the LORD, and thou hast followed Baalim.

For I think that God hath set forth us the apostles last, as it were appointed to death: for we are made a spectacle unto the world, and to angels, and to men.We[ are] fools for Christ’s sake, but ye[ are] wise in Christ; we[ are] weak, but ye[ are] strong; ye[ are] honourable, but we[ are] despised.Even unto this present hour we both hunger, and thirst, and are naked, and are buffeted, and have no certain dwellingplace;And labour, working with our own hands: being reviled, we bless; being persecuted, we suffer it:Being defamed, we intreat: we are made as the filth of the world,[ and are] the offscouring of all things unto this day.

Thou shalt not lend upon usury to thy brother; usury of money, usury of victuals, usury of any thing that is lent upon usury:Unto a stranger thou mayest lend upon usury; but unto thy brother thou shalt not lend upon usury: that the LORD thy God may bless thee in all that thou settest thine hand to in the land whither thou goest to possess it.

And Simeon blessed them, and said unto Mary his mother, Behold, this[ child] is set for the fall and rising again of many in Israel; and for a sign which shall be spoken against;

Blessed are ye, when men shall hate you, and when they shall separate you[ from their company], and shall reproach[ you], and cast out your name as evil, for the Son of man’s sake.

But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you;

Cursed[ be] the day wherein I was born: let not the day wherein my mother bare me be blessed.Cursed[ be] the man who brought tidings to my father, saying, A man child is born unto thee; making him very glad.And let that man be as the cities which the LORD overthrew, and repented not: and let him hear the cry in the morning, and the shouting at noontide;Because he slew me not from the womb; or that my mother might have been my grave, and her womb[ to be] always great[ with me].Wherefore came I forth out of the womb to see labour and sorrow, that my days should be consumed with shame?

Whom he called together with the workmen of like occupation, and said, Sirs, ye know that by this craft we have our wealth.Moreover ye see and hear, that not alone at Ephesus, but almost throughout all Asia, this Paul hath persuaded and turned away much people, saying that they be no gods, which are made with hands:So that not only this our craft is in danger to be set at nought; but also that the temple of the great goddess Diana should be despised, and her magnificence should be destroyed, whom all Asia and the world worshippeth.And when they heard[ these sayings], they were full of wrath, and cried out, saying, Great[ is] Diana of the Ephesians.

But we desire to hear of thee what thou thinkest: for as concerning this sect, we know that every where it is spoken against.

But the house of Israel will not hearken unto thee; for they will not hearken unto me: for all the house of Israel[ are] impudent and hardhearted.Behold, I have made thy face strong against their faces, and thy forehead strong against their foreheads.As an adamant harder than flint have I made thy forehead: fear them not, neither be dismayed at their looks, though they[ be] a rebellious house.

Then shall they deliver you up to be afflicted, and shall kill you: and ye shall be hated of all nations for my name’s sake.

Woe is me, that I sojourn in Mesech,[ that] I dwell in the tents of Kedar!My soul hath long dwelt with him that hateth peace.

And he went into the synagogue, and spake boldly for the space of three months, disputing and persuading the things concerning the kingdom of God.But when divers were hardened, and believed not, but spake evil of that way before the multitude, he departed from them, and separated the disciples, disputing daily in the school of one Tyrannus.

And the brother shall deliver up the brother to death, and the father the child: and the children shall rise up against[ their] parents, and cause them to be put to death.And ye shall be hated of all[ men] for my name’s sake: but he that endureth to the end shall be saved.But when they persecute you in this city, flee ye into another: for verily I say unto you, Ye shall not have gone over the cities of Israel, till the Son of man be come.

Take thou no usury of him, or increase: but fear thy God; that thy brother may live with thee.

And when they found them not, they drew Jason and certain brethren unto the rulers of the city, crying, These that have turned the world upside down are come hither also;Whom Jason hath received: and these all do contrary to the decrees of Caesar, saying that there is another king,[ one] Jesus.And they troubled the people and the rulers of the city, when they heard these things.

Let them curse, but bless thou: when they arise, let them be ashamed; but let thy servant rejoice.

And there was a great cry of the people and of their wives against their brethren the Jews.For there were that said, We, our sons, and our daughters,[ are] many: therefore we take up corn[ for them], that we may eat, and live.[ Some] also there were that said, We have mortgaged our lands, vineyards, and houses, that we might buy corn, because of the dearth.There were also that said, We have borrowed money for the king’s tribute,[ and that upon] our lands and vineyards.Yet now our flesh[ is] as the flesh of our brethren, our children as their children: and, lo, we bring into bondage our sons and our daughters to be servants, and[ some] of our daughters are brought unto bondage[ already]: neither[ is it] in our power[ to redeem them]; for other men have our lands and vineyards.And I was very angry when I heard their cry and these words.
