Woe is me, my mother, that you gave birth to me, a man who incites dispute and conflict in all the land. I did not lend or borrow, yet everyone curses me.

Alas, my mother, that you gave me birth, a man with whom the whole land strives and contends! I have neither lent nor borrowed, yet everyone curses me.

My mother, I wish I had never been born! The whole land opposes me. They fight against me. I haven’t made loans to anyone. And I haven’t borrowed anything. But everyone curses me anyway.

Woe is me, my mother, that you bore me, a man of strife and contention to the whole land! I have not lent, nor have I borrowed, yet all of them curse me.

Then I said,“ What sorrow is mine, my mother. Oh, that I had died at birth! I am hated everywhere I go. I am neither a lender who threatens to foreclose nor a borrower who refuses to pay— yet they all curse me.”

Woe is me, my mother, that thou hast borne me a man of strife and a man of contention to the whole earth! I have not lent, neither have men lent to me; yet every one of them doth curse me.

I said,“ Oh, mother, how I regret that you ever gave birth to me! I am always starting arguments and quarrels with the people of this land. I have not lent money to anyone and I have not borrowed from anyone. Yet all of these people are treating me with contempt.”

Woe is me, my mother, that you have borne me, a man of strife, and a man of contention to the whole earth! I have not lent, neither have men lent to me; yet every one of them curses me.

“ If you lend money to My people, to the poor person among you, you must not be like a moneylender to him; you must not charge him interest.

You deceived me, Lord, and I was deceived. You seized me and prevailed. I am a laughingstock all the time; everyone ridicules me.For whenever I speak, I cry out, I proclaim,“ Violence and destruction!” because the word of the Lord has become for me constant disgrace and derision.

Today, I am the One who has made you a fortified city, an iron pillar, and bronze walls against the whole land— against the kings of Judah, its officials, its priests, and the population.They will fight against you but never prevail over you, since I am with you to rescue you.” This is the Lord’s declaration.

who does not lend his money at interest or take a bribe against the innocent— the one who does these things will never be moved.

Then I will make you a fortified wall of bronze to this people. They will fight against you but will not overcome you, for I am with you to save you and deliver you. This is the Lord’s declaration.

After this, Job began to speak and cursed the day he was born.He said:May the day I was born perish, and the night when they said,“ A boy is conceived.”If only that day had turned to darkness! May God above not care about it, or light shine on it.May darkness and gloom reclaim it, and a cloud settle over it. May an eclipse of the sun terrify it.If only darkness had taken that night away! May it not appear among the days of the year or be listed in the calendar.Yes, may that night be barren; may no joyful shout be heard in it.Let those who curse certain days cast a spell on it, those who are skilled in rousing Leviathan.May its morning stars grow dark. May it wait for daylight but have none; may it not see the breaking of dawn.For that night did not shut the doors of my mother’s womb, and hide sorrow from my eyes.Why was I not stillborn; why didn’t I die as I came from the womb?Why did the knees receive me, and why were there breasts for me to nurse?Now I would certainly be lying down in peace; I would be asleep. Then I would be at restwith the kings and counselors of the earth, who rebuilt ruined cities for themselves,or with princes who had gold, who filled their houses with silver.Or why was I not hidden like a miscarried child, like infants who never see daylight?There the wicked cease to make trouble, and there the weary find rest.The captives are completely at ease; they do not hear the voice of their oppressor.Both small and great are there, and the slave is set free from his master.Why is light given to one burdened with grief, and life to those whose existence is bitter,who wait for death, but it does not come, and search for it more than for hidden treasure,who are filled with much joy and are glad when they reach the grave?Why is life given to a man whose path is hidden, whom God has hedged in?I sigh when food is put before me, and my groans pour out like water.For the thing I feared has overtaken me, and what I dreaded has happened to me.I cannot relax or be still; I have no rest, for trouble comes.

“ But you, son of man, do not be afraid of them or their words, though briers and thorns are beside you and you live among scorpions. Don’t be afraid of their words or be discouraged by the look on their faces, for they are a rebellious house.But speak My words to them whether they listen or refuse to listen, for they are rebellious.

Bringing them before the chief magistrates, they said,“ These men are seriously disturbing our city. They are Jewsand are promoting customs that are not legal for us as Romans to adopt or practice.”Then the mob joined in the attack against them, and the chief magistrates stripped off their clothes and ordered them to be beaten with rods.

Like a flitting sparrow or a fluttering swallow, an undeserved curse goes nowhere.

The king of Israel said to Jehoshaphat,“ There is still one man who can ask Yahweh, but I hate him because he never prophesies good about me, but only disaster. He is Micaiah son of Imlah.”“ The king shouldn’t say that!” Jehoshaphat replied.

Ahab said to Elijah,“ So, you have caught me, my enemy.” He replied,“ I have caught you because you devoted yourself to do what is evil in the Lord’s sight.

When Ahab saw Elijah, Ahab said to him,“ Is that you, you destroyer of Israel?”He replied,“ I have not destroyed Israel, but you and your father’s house have, because you have abandoned the Lord’s commands and followed the Baals.

For I think God has displayed us, the apostles, in last place, like men condemned to die: We have become a spectacle to the world and to angels and to men.We are fools for Christ, but you are wise in Christ! We are weak, but you are strong! You are distinguished, but we are dishonored!Up to the present hour we are both hungry and thirsty; we are poorly clothed, roughly treated, homeless;we labor, working with our own hands. When we are reviled, we bless; when we are persecuted, we endure it;when we are slandered, we respond graciously. Even now, we are like the world’s garbage, like the dirt everyone scrapes off their sandals.

“ Do not charge your brother interest on money, food, or anything that can earn interest.You may charge a foreigner interest, but you must not charge your brother interest, so that the Lord your God may bless you in everything you do in the land you are entering to possess.

Then Simeon blessed them and told His mother Mary:“ Indeed, this child is destined to cause the fall and rise of many in Israel and to be a sign that will be opposed—

You are blessed when people hate you, when they exclude you, insult you, and slander your name as evil because of the Son of Man.

But I tell you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you,

May the day I was born be cursed. May the day my mother bore me never be blessed.May the man be cursed who brought the news to my father, saying,“ A male child is born to you,” bringing him great joy.Let that man be like the cities the Lord demolished without compassion. Let him hear an outcry in the morning and a war cry at noontimebecause he didn’t kill me in the womb so that my mother might have been my grave, her womb eternally pregnant.Why did I come out of the womb to see only struggle and sorrow, to end my life in shame?

When he had assembled them, as well as the workers engaged in this type of business, he said:“ Men, you know that our prosperity is derived from this business.You both see and hear that not only in Ephesus, but in almost all of Asia, this man Paul has persuaded and misled a considerable number of people by saying that gods made by hand are not gods!So not only do we run a risk that our business may be discredited, but also that the temple of the great goddess Artemis may be despised and her magnificence come to the verge of ruin— the very one all of Asia and the world adore.”When they had heard this, they were filled with rage and began to cry out,“ Great is Artemis of the Ephesians!”

But we would like to hear from you what you think. For concerning this sect, we are aware that it is spoken against everywhere.”

But the house of Israel will not want to listen to you because they do not want to listen to Me. For the whole house of Israel is hardheaded and hardhearted.Look, I have made your face as hard as their faces and your forehead as hard as their foreheads.I have made your forehead like a diamond, harder than flint. Don’t be afraid of them or discouraged by the look on their faces, even though they are a rebellious house.”

“ Then they will hand you over for persecution, and they will kill you. You will be hated by all nations because of My name.

What misery that I have stayed in Meshech, that I have lived among the tents of Kedar!I have lived too long with those who hate peace.

Then he entered the synagogue and spoke boldly over a period of three months, engaging in discussion and trying to persuade them about the things of the kingdom of God.But when some became hardened and would not believe, slandering the Way in front of the crowd, he withdrew from them and met separately with the disciples, conducting discussions every day in the lecture hall of Tyrannus.

“ Brother will betray brother to death, and a father his child. Children will even rise up against their parents and have them put to death.You will be hated by everyone because of My name. But the one who endures to the end will be delivered.When they persecute you in one town, escape to another. For I assure you: You will not have covered the towns of Israel before the Son of Man comes.

Do not profit or take interest from him, but fear your God and let your brother live among you.

When they did not find them, they dragged Jason and some of the brothers before the city officials, shouting,“ These men who have turned the world upside down have come here too,and Jason has received them as guests! They are all acting contrary to Caesar’s decrees, saying that there is another king— Jesus!”The Jews stirred up the crowd and the city officials who heard these things.

Though they curse, You will bless. When they rise up, they will be put to shame, but Your servant will rejoice.

There was a widespread outcry from the people and their wives against their Jewish countrymen.Some were saying,“ We, our sons, and our daughters are numerous. Let us get grain so that we can eat and live.”Others were saying,“ We are mortgaging our fields, vineyards, and homes to get grain during the famine.”Still others were saying,“ We have borrowed money to pay the king’s tax on our fields and vineyards.We and our children are just like our countrymen and their children, yet we are subjecting our sons and daughters to slavery. Some of our daughters are already enslaved, but we are powerless because our fields and vineyards belong to others.”I became extremely angry when I heard their outcry and these complaints.
