Alas, my mother, that you gave me birth, a man with whom the whole land strives and contends! I have neither lent nor borrowed, yet everyone curses me.

My mother, I wish I had never been born! The whole land opposes me. They fight against me. I haven’t made loans to anyone. And I haven’t borrowed anything. But everyone curses me anyway.

Woe is me, my mother, that you bore me, a man of strife and contention to the whole land! I have not lent, nor have I borrowed, yet all of them curse me.

Then I said,“ What sorrow is mine, my mother. Oh, that I had died at birth! I am hated everywhere I go. I am neither a lender who threatens to foreclose nor a borrower who refuses to pay— yet they all curse me.”

Woe to me, my mother, that you have given birth to me As a man of strife and a man of contention to all the land! I have not lent, nor have people lent money to me, Yet everyone curses me.

I said,“ Oh, mother, how I regret that you ever gave birth to me! I am always starting arguments and quarrels with the people of this land. I have not lent money to anyone and I have not borrowed from anyone. Yet all of these people are treating me with contempt.”

Woe is me, my mother, that you have borne me, a man of strife, and a man of contention to the whole earth! I have not lent, neither have men lent to me; yet every one of them curses me.

“ If you lend silver to my people, to the poor person among you, you must not be like a creditor to him; you must not charge him interest.

You deceived me, LORD, and I was deceived. You seized me and prevailed. I am a laughingstock all the time; everyone ridicules me.For whenever I speak, I cry out, I proclaim,“ Violence and destruction!” so the word of the LORD has become my constant disgrace and derision.

Today, I am the one who has made you a fortified city, an iron pillar, and bronze walls against the whole land— against the kings of Judah, its officials, its priests, and the population.They will fight against you but never prevail over you, since I am with you to rescue you.” This is the LORD’s declaration.

who does not lend his silver at interest or take a bribe against the innocent— the one who does these things will never be shaken.

Then I will make you a fortified wall of bronze to this people. They will fight against you but will not overcome you, for I am with you to save you and rescue you. This is the LORD’s declaration.

After this, Job began to speak and cursed the day he was born.He said:May the day I was born perish, and the night that said,“ A boy is conceived.”If only that day had turned to darkness! May God above not care about it, or light shine on it.May darkness and gloom reclaim it, and a cloud settle over it. May what darkens the day terrify it.If only darkness had taken that night away! May it not appear among the days of the year or be listed in the calendar.Yes, may that night be barren; may no joyful shout be heard in it.Let those who curse days condemn it, those who are ready to rouse Leviathan.May its morning stars grow dark. Then I would be at restwith the kings and counselors of the earth, who rebuilt ruined cities for themselves,or with princes who had gold, who filled their houses with silver.Or why was I not hidden like a miscarried child, like infants who never see daylight?There the wicked cease to make trouble, and there the weary find rest.The captives are completely at rest; they do not hear a taskmaster’s voice.Both small and great are there, and the slave is set free from his master.Why is light given to one burdened with grief, and life to those whose existence is bitter,who wait for death, but it does not come, and search for it more than for hidden treasure,who are filled with much joy and are glad when they reach the grave?Why is life given to a man whose path is hidden, whom God has hedged in?I sigh when food is put before me, and my groans pour out like water.For the thing I feared has overtaken me, and what I dreaded has happened to me.I cannot relax or be calm; I have no rest, for turmoil has come.

“ But you, son of man, do not be afraid of them and do not be afraid of their words, even though briers and thorns are beside you and you live among scorpions. Don’t be afraid of their words or discouraged by the look on their faces, for they are a rebellious house.Speak my words to them whether they listen or refuse to listen, for they are rebellious.

Bringing them before the chief magistrates, they said,“ These men are seriously disturbing our city. They are Jewsand are promoting customs that are not legal for us as Romans to adopt or practice.”The crowd joined in the attack against them, and the chief magistrates stripped off their clothes and ordered them to be beaten with rods.

Like a flitting sparrow or a fluttering swallow, an undeserved curse goes nowhere.

The king of Israel said to Jehoshaphat,“ There is still one man who can inquire of the LORD, but I hate him because he never prophesies good about me, but only disaster. He is Micaiah son of Imlah.”“ The king shouldn’t say that!” Jehoshaphat replied.

Ahab said to Elijah,“ So, my enemy, you’ve found me, have you?” He replied,“ I have found you because you devoted yourself to do what is evil in the LORD’s sight.

When Ahab saw Elijah, Ahab said to him,“ Is that you, the one ruining Israel?”He replied,“ I have not ruined Israel, but you and your father’s family have, because you have abandoned the LORD’s commands and followed the Baals.

For I think God has displayed us, the apostles, in last place, like men condemned to die: We have become a spectacle to the world, both to angels and to people.We are fools for Christ, but you are wise in Christ! We are weak, but you are strong! You are distinguished, but we are dishonored!Up to the present hour we are both hungry and thirsty; we are poorly clothed, roughly treated, homeless;we labor, working with our own hands. When we are reviled, we bless; when we are persecuted, we endure it;when we are slandered, we respond graciously. Even now, we are like the scum of the earth, like everyone’s garbage.

“ Do not charge your brother interest on silver, food, or anything that can earn interest.You may charge a foreigner interest, but you must not charge your brother Israelite interest, so that the LORD your God may bless you in everything you do in the land you are entering to possess.

Then Simeon blessed them and told his mother Mary,“ Indeed, this child is destined to cause the fall and rise of many in Israel and to be a sign that will be opposed—

Blessed are you when people hate you, when they exclude you, insult you, and slander your name as evil because of the Son of Man.

But I tell you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you,

May the day I was born be cursed. May the day my mother bore me never be blessed.May the man be cursed who brought the news to my father, saying,“ A male child is born to you,” bringing him great joy.Let that man be like the cities the LORD demolished without compassion. Let him hear an outcry in the morning and a war cry at noontimebecause he didn’t kill me in the womb so that my mother might have been my grave, her womb eternally pregnant.Why did I come out of the womb to see only struggle and sorrow, to end my life in shame?

When he had assembled them, as well as the workers engaged in this type of business, he said,“ Men, you know that our prosperity is derived from this business.You see and hear that not only in Ephesus, but in almost all of Asia, this man Paul has persuaded and misled a considerable number of people by saying that gods made by hand are not gods.Not only do we run a risk that our business may be discredited, but also that the temple of the great goddess Artemis may be despised and her magnificence come to the verge of ruin— the very one all of Asia and the world worship.”When they had heard this, they were filled with rage and began to cry out,“ Great is Artemis of the Ephesians!”

But we want to hear what your views are, since we know that people everywhere are speaking against this sect.”

But the house of Israel will not want to listen to you because they do not want to listen to me. For the whole house of Israel is hardheaded and hardhearted.Look, I have made your face as hard as their faces and your forehead as hard as their foreheads.I have made your forehead like a diamond, harder than flint. Don’t be afraid of them or discouraged by the look on their faces, though they are a rebellious house.”

“ Then they will hand you over to be persecuted, and they will kill you. You will be hated by all nations because of my name.

What misery that I have stayed in Meshech, that I have lived among the tents of Kedar!I have dwelt too long with those who hate peace.

Paul entered the synagogue and spoke boldly over a period of three months, arguing and persuading them about the kingdom of God.But when some became hardened and would not believe, slandering the Way in front of the crowd, he withdrew from them, taking the disciples, and conducted discussions every day in the lecture hall of Tyrannus.

“ Brother will betray brother to death, and a father his child. Children will rise up against parents and have them put to death.You will be hated by everyone because of my name. But the one who endures to the end will be saved.When they persecute you in one town, flee to another. For truly I tell you, you will not have gone through the towns of Israel before the Son of Man comes.

Do not profit or take interest from him, but fear your God and let your brother live among you.

When they did not find them, they dragged Jason and some of the brothers before the city officials, shouting,“ These men who have turned the world upside down have come here too,and Jason has welcomed them. They are all acting contrary to Caesar’s decrees, saying that there is another king— Jesus.”The crowd and city officials who heard these things were upset.

Though they curse, you will bless. When they rise up, they will be put to shame, but your servant will rejoice.

There was a widespread outcry from the people and their wives against their Jewish countrymen.Some were saying,“ We, our sons, and our daughters are numerous. Let us get grain so that we can eat and live.”Others were saying,“ We are mortgaging our fields, vineyards, and homes to get grain during the famine.”Still others were saying,“ We have borrowed money to pay the king’s tax on our fields and vineyards.We and our children are just like our countrymen and their children, yet we are subjecting our sons and daughters to slavery. Some of our daughters are already enslaved, but we are powerless because our fields and vineyards belong to others.”I became extremely angry when I heard their outcry and these complaints.
