他們宣稱認識上帝，卻在行為上否認他；他們是可憎惡的，是悖逆的，不配做任何好事。

「原來栽培你的萬軍之耶和華已經說要降禍給你，是因以色列家和猶大家行惡。他們向巴力燒香，惹我發怒，是自作自受。」

你要這樣告訴他，耶和華如此說：看哪，我所建立的，我必拆毀；我所栽植的，我必拔出；在全地我都如此行。

『這百姓用嘴唇尊敬我，他們的心卻遠離我。

他們如同百姓前來，來到你這裏，坐在你面前彷彿是我的子民。他們聽了你的話，卻不實行；因為他們口裏說愛，心卻追隨財利。

牠又從這地取了一些種子，種在肥沃的田裏，栽於豐沛的水源旁，如種植柳樹。它漸漸生長，成為低矮蔓生的葡萄樹；樹枝伸向那鷹，根部在牠下面。這樣，它就長成了一棵葡萄樹，生出枝子，長出枝幹。「有一隻大鷹，翅膀大，羽毛多。看哪，葡萄樹從栽種它的苗圃向這鷹伸出根來，長出枝子，期盼從牠得到澆灌。這棵樹栽於肥田豐沛的水源旁，原是為了生枝、結果，成為佳美的葡萄樹。你要說，主耶和華如此說：這棵葡萄樹豈能發旺呢？鷹豈不拔出它的根來，摘光它的果子，使它枯乾，連長出的嫩葉都枯萎了嗎？要把它連根拔除，並不需要費大力或動用許多人。看哪，葡萄樹雖然栽種了，豈能發旺呢？一經東風擊打，豈不全然枯乾了嗎？它必在生長的苗圃中枯乾了。」

耶穌對他們說：「以賽亞指着你們假冒為善的人所預言的說得好。如經上所記：『這百姓用嘴唇尊敬我，他們的心卻遠離我。

你的母親如葡萄樹，在葡萄園中，栽於水邊，因為水多，就多結果子，多生枝子；它長出堅固的枝幹，可作統治者的權杖。這枝幹高舉在茂密的樹枝中，可見樹身高大，枝子繁多。但在烈怒中它被拔出，摔在地上；東風吹乾其果子，那堅固的枝幹因折斷而枯乾，被火燒燬；如今這葡萄樹移植於曠野，在乾旱無水之地，

雖有這一切的事，她奸詐的妹妹猶大還不一心歸向我，不過是假意歸我。這是耶和華說的。」
