The leaders of Gilead said to one another,“ Who is willing to lead the charge against the Ammonites? He will become the leader of all who live in Gilead!”

基列百姓中的領袖彼此說：「誰領先出去攻打亞捫人，誰就作基列所有居民的領袖。」

基列的人民、基列的首領、就彼此說：『哪一個人能先去攻打亞捫人，那一個人就可以做基列一切居民的首領。』

基列民之牧伯相議曰、誰先戰亞捫人、彼必為基列民長、

基列民及其長相議曰、誰先戰亞捫族、必為基列民之牧。

基列之民及諸牧伯相議曰、誰先戰亞捫人、必為基列一切居民之首、

The leaders of the people of Gilead said to each other,“ Whoever will take the lead in attacking the Ammonites will be head over all who live in Gilead.”

The leaders of Gilead spoke to one another. They said,“ Who will lead the attack against the Ammonites? That person will be the ruler of all the people who live in Gilead.”

And the people, the leaders of Gilead, said one to another,“ Who is the man who will begin to fight against the Ammonites? He shall be head over all the inhabitants of Gilead.”

The leaders of Gilead said to each other,“ Whoever attacks the Ammonites first will become ruler over all the people of Gilead.”

The rulers of Gilead said to one another,“ Which man will begin the fight against the Ammonites? He will be the leader of all the inhabitants of Gilead.”

And the people, the leaders of Gilead, said to one another,“ Who is the man who will begin to fight against the sons of Ammon? He shall become head over all the inhabitants of Gilead.”

And the people, the leaders of Gilead, said to one another,“ Who is the man who will begin the fight against the people of Ammon? He shall be head over all the inhabitants of Gilead.”

And the people, the princes of Gilead, said one to another, What man is he that will begin to fight against the children of Ammon? he shall be head over all the inhabitants of Gilead.

The rulers of Gilead said to one another,“ Which man will lead the fight against the Ammonites? He will be the leader of all the inhabitants of Gilead.”

And the people[ and] princes of Gilead said one to another, What man[ is he] that will begin to fight against the children of Ammon? he shall be head over all the inhabitants of Gilead.

The people, the princes of Gilead, said to one another,“ Who is the man who will begin to fight against the children of Ammon? He shall be head over all the inhabitants of Gilead.”

So Jephthah went with the leaders of Gilead. The people made him their leader and commander. Jephthah repeated the terms of the agreement before the LORD in Mizpah.

The men of Israel said,“ Have you seen this man who is coming up? He does so to defy Israel. But the king will make the man who can strike him down very wealthy! He will give him his daughter in marriage, and he will make his father’s house exempt from tax obligations in Israel.”

Look, the sovereign LORD who commands armies is about to remove from Jerusalem and Judah every source of security, including all the food and water,the mighty men and warriors, judges and prophets, omen readers and leaders,captains of groups of fifty, the respected citizens, advisers and those skilled in magical arts, and those who know incantations.The LORD says,“ I will make youths their officials; malicious young men will rule over them.The people will treat each other harshly; men will oppose each other; neighbors will fight. Youths will proudly defy the elderly and riffraff will challenge those who were once respected.Indeed, a man will grab his brother right in his father’s house and say,‘ You own a coat– you be our leader! This heap of ruins will be under your control.’At that time the brother will shout,‘ I am no doctor, I have no food or coat in my house; don’t make me a leader of the people!’”Jerusalem certainly stumbles, Judah falls, for their words and their actions offend the LORD; they rebel against his royal authority.

After Joshua died, the Israelites asked the LORD,“ Who should lead the invasion against the Canaanites and launch the attack?”

Jephthah led Israel for six years; then he died and was buried in his city in Gilead.

When the Ammonites attacked, the leaders of Gilead asked Jephthah to come back from the land of Tob.They said,“ Come, be our commander, so we can fight with the Ammonites.”Jephthah said to the leaders of Gilead,“ But you hated me and made me leave my father’s house. Why do you come to me now, when you are in trouble?”The leaders of Gilead said to Jephthah,“ That may be true, but now we pledge to you our loyalty. Come with us and fight with the Ammonites. Then you will become the leader of all who live in Gilead.”

Her nobles will have nothing left to call a kingdom and all her officials will disappear.
