He was despised and rejected by mankind, a man of suffering, and familiar with pain. Like one from whom people hide their faces he was despised, and we held him in low esteem.

People looked down on him. They didn’t accept him. He knew all about pain and suffering. He was like someone people turn their faces away from. We looked down on him. We didn’t have any respect for him.

He said to them,“ My soul is exceedingly sorrowful, even to death. Stay here, and watch.”

Surely he has borne our sickness and carried our suffering; yet we considered him plagued, struck by God, and afflicted.

Yahweh, the Redeemer of Israel, and his Holy One, says to him whom man despises, to him whom the nation abhors, to a servant of rulers:“ Kings shall see and rise up, princes, and they shall worship, because of Yahweh who is faithful, even the Holy One of Israel, who has chosen you.”

looking to Jesus, the author and perfecter of faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising its shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.For consider him who has endured such contradiction of sinners against himself, that you don’t grow weary, fainting in your souls.

But I am a worm, and no man; a reproach of men, and despised by the people.All those who see me mock me. They insult me with their lips. They shake their heads, saying,“ He trusts in Yahweh. Let him deliver him. Let him rescue him, since he delights in him.”

He, in the days of his flesh, having offered up prayers and petitions with strong crying and tears to him who was able to save him from death, and having been heard for his godly fear,

I gave my back to those who beat me, and my cheeks to those who plucked off the hair. I didn’t hide my face from shame and spitting.

I said to them,“ If you think it best, give me my wages; and if not, keep them.” So they weighed for my wages thirty pieces of silver.Yahweh said to me,“ Throw it to the potter, the handsome price that I was valued at by them!” I took the thirty pieces of silver, and threw them to the potter, in Yahweh’s house.

For we don’t have a high priest who can’t be touched with the feeling of our infirmities, but one who has been in all points tempted like we are, yet without sin.

saying,“ The Son of Man must suffer many things, and be rejected by the elders, chief priests, and scribes, and be killed, and the third day be raised up.”

They were ridiculing him, knowing that she was dead.

They struck his head with a reed, and spat on him, and bowing their knees, did homage to him.

The Pharisees, who were lovers of money, also heard all these things, and they scoffed at him.

and might deliver all of them who through fear of death were all their lifetime subject to bondage.For most certainly, he doesn’t give help to angels, but he gives help to the offspring of Abraham.Therefore he was obligated in all things to be made like his brothers, that he might become a merciful and faithful high priest in things pertaining to God, to make atonement for the sins of the people.For in that he himself has suffered being tempted, he is able to help those who are tempted.

He said to them,“ Elijah indeed comes first, and restores all things. How is it written about the Son of Man, that he should suffer many things and be despised?

He took the twelve aside, and said to them,“ Behold, we are going up to Jerusalem, and all the things that are written through the prophets concerning the Son of Man will be completed.For he will be delivered up to the Gentiles, will be mocked, treated shamefully, and spit on.They will scourge and kill him. On the third day, he will rise again.”

saying,“ Sir, we remember what that deceiver said while he was still alive:‘ After three days I will rise again.’

Then the Jews answered him,“ Don’t we say well that you are a Samaritan, and have a demon?”

Those who passed by blasphemed him, wagging their heads,and saying,“ You who destroy the temple, and build it in three days, save yourself! If you are the Son of God, come down from the cross!”Likewise the chief priests also mocking, with the scribes, the Pharisees, and the elders, said,“ He saved others, but he can’t save himself. If he is the King of Israel, let him come down from the cross now, and we will believe in him.He trusts in God. Let God deliver him now, if he wants him; for he said,‘ I am the Son of God.’”The robbers also who were crucified with him cast on him the same reproach.

Now you shall gather yourself in troops, daughter of troops. He has laid siege against us. They will strike the judge of Israel with a rod on the cheek.

Jesus wept.

You know my reproach, my shame, and my dishonor. My adversaries are all before you.Reproach has broken my heart, and I am full of heaviness. I looked for some to take pity, but there was none; for comforters, but I found none.

He took with him Peter and the two sons of Zebedee, and began to be sorrowful and severely troubled.Then he said to them,“ My soul is exceedingly sorrowful, even to death. Stay here, and watch with me.”

The God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, the God of our fathers, has glorified his Servant Jesus, whom you delivered up, and denied in the presence of Pilate, when he had determined to release him.But you denied the Holy and Righteous One and asked for a murderer to be granted to you,and killed the Prince of life, whom God raised from the dead, to which we are witnesses.

But Jeshurun grew fat, and kicked. You have grown fat. You have grown thick. You have become sleek. Then he abandoned God who made him, and rejected the Rock of his salvation.

Then that which was spoken through Jeremiah the prophet was fulfilled, saying,“ They took the thirty pieces of silver, the price of him upon whom a price had been set, whom some of the children of Israel priced,and they gave them for the potter’s field, as the Lord commanded me.”

When I wept and I fasted, that was to my reproach.When I made sackcloth my clothing, I became a byword to them.Those who sit in the gate talk about me. I am the song of the drunkards.

I cut off the three shepherds in one month; for my soul was weary of them, and their soul also loathed me.

But they all cried out together, saying,“ Away with this man! Release to us Barabbas!”—one who was thrown into prison for a certain revolt in the city, and for murder.Then Pilate spoke to them again, wanting to release Jesus,but they shouted, saying,“ Crucify! Crucify him!”He said to them the third time,“ Why? What evil has this man done? I have found no capital crime in him. I will therefore chastise him and release him.”But they were urgent with loud voices, asking that he might be crucified. Their voices and the voices of the chief priests prevailed.Pilate decreed that what they asked for should be done.He released him who had been thrown into prison for insurrection and murder, for whom they asked, but he delivered Jesus up to their will.

When he came near, he saw the city and wept over it,

But I am in pain and distress. Let your salvation, God, protect me.
