“ Come now, let us reason together, says the Lord: though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they are red like crimson, they shall become like wool.

Who shall bring any charge against God’s elect? It is God who justifies.

But you said,‘ It is hopeless, for I have loved foreigners, and after them I will go.’“ As a thief is shamed when caught, so the house of Israel shall be shamed: they, their kings, their officials, their priests, and their prophets,who say to a tree,‘ You are my father,’ and to a stone,‘ You gave me birth.’ For they have turned their back to me, and not their face. But in the time of their trouble they say,‘ Arise and save us!’But where are your gods that you made for yourself? Let them arise, if they can save you, in your time of trouble; for as many as your cities are your gods, O Judah.“ Why do you contend with me? You have all transgressed against me, declares the Lord.In vain have I struck your children; they took no correction; your own sword devoured your prophets like a ravening lion.And you, O generation, behold the word of the Lord. Have I been a wilderness to Israel, or a land of thick darkness? Why then do my people say,‘ We are free, we will come no more to you’?Can a virgin forget her ornaments, or a bride her attire? Yet my people have forgotten me days without number.“ How well you direct your course to seek love! So that even to wicked women you have taught your ways.Also on your skirts is found the lifeblood of the guiltless poor; you did not find them breaking in. Yet in spite of all these thingsyou say,‘ I am innocent; surely his anger has turned from me.’ Behold, I will bring you to judgment for saying,‘ I have not sinned.’

But you said,‘ I will surely do you good, and make your offspring as the sand of the sea, which cannot be numbered for multitude.’”

He who vindicates me is near. Who will contend with me? Let us stand up together. Who is my adversary? Let him come near to me.

He also told this parable to some who trusted in themselves that they were righteous, and treated others with contempt:“ Two men went up into the temple to pray, one a Pharisee and the other a tax collector.The Pharisee, standing by himself, prayed thus:‘ God, I thank you that I am not like other men, extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even like this tax collector.I fast twice a week; I give tithes of all that I get.’But the tax collector, standing far off, would not even lift up his eyes to heaven, but beat his breast, saying,‘ God, be merciful to me, a sinner!’I tell you, this man went down to his house justified, rather than the other. For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, but the one who humbles himself will be exalted.”

Oh, that I knew where I might find him, that I might come even to his seat!I would lay my case before him and fill my mouth with arguments.I would know what he would answer me and understand what he would say to me.Would he contend with me in the greatness of his power? No; he would pay attention to me.

Let my prayer be counted as incense before you, and the lifting up of my hands as the evening sacrifice!
