You turn mighty cities into heaps of ruins. Cities with strong walls are turned to rubble. Beautiful palaces in distant lands disappear and will never be rebuilt.

You have turned cities into piles of trash. You have pulled down the high walls that were around them. You have destroyed our enemies’ forts. They will never be rebuilt.

This message came to me concerning Damascus:“ Look, the city of Damascus will disappear! It will become a heap of ruins.

Hyenas will howl in its fortresses, and jackals will make dens in its luxurious palaces. Babylon’s days are numbered; its time of destruction will soon arrive.

The high walls of Moab will be demolished. They will be brought down to the ground, down into the dust.

Look at the land of Babylonia— the people of that land are gone! The Assyrians have handed Babylon over to the wild animals of the desert. They have built siege ramps against its walls, torn down its palaces, and turned it to a heap of rubble.

And they will weep and throw dust on their heads to show their grief. And they will cry out,“ How terrible, how terrible for that great city! The shipowners became wealthy by transporting her great wealth on the seas. In a single moment it is all gone.”

Now at last— look! Here comes a man in a chariot with a pair of horses!” Then the watchman said,“ Babylon is fallen, fallen! All the idols of Babylon lie broken on the ground!”

All your fortresses will fall. They will be devoured like the ripe figs that fall into the mouths of those who shake the trees.Your troops will be as weak and helpless as women. The gates of your land will be opened wide to the enemy and set on fire and burned.Get ready for the siege! Store up water! Strengthen the defenses! Go into the pits to trample clay, and pack it into molds, making bricks to repair the walls.But the fire will devour you; the sword will cut you down. The enemy will consume you like locusts, devouring everything they see. There will be no escape, even if you multiply like swarming locusts.

He gave a mighty shout:“ Babylon is fallen— that great city is fallen! She has become a home for demons. She is a hideout for every foul spirit, a hideout for every foul vulture and every foul and dreadful animal.For all the nations have fallen because of the wine of her passionate immorality. The kings of the world have committed adultery with her. Because of her desires for extravagant luxury, the merchants of the world have grown rich.”

“ I will make Babylon a desolate place of owls, filled with swamps and marshes. I will sweep the land with the broom of destruction. I, the Lord of Heaven’s Armies, have spoken!”

You will be desolate forever. Even your stones will never again be used for building. You will be completely wiped out,” says the Lord.
