在这些虔诚的事以后，亚述王西拿基立来侵犯犹大，围困坚固城，想要攻破它们。希西家见西拿基立来，定意要攻打耶路撒冷，就与领袖和勇士商议，塞住城外的泉源；他们都帮助他。于是许多百姓聚集，塞住一切泉源，以及国中流通的小河，说：“亚述诸王来，为何让他们得着许多水呢？”希西家奋勇自强，修筑所有毁坏的城墙，升高城楼，又在城外筑另一片城墙，坚固大卫城的米罗，制造许多兵器和盾牌。他设立军事将领管理百姓，召集他们在城门的广场，勉励他们，说：
