When Ephraim spoke, people trembled; he was exalted in Israel. But he became guilty of Baal worship and died.

In the thirty-eighth year of Asa king of Judah, Ahab the son of Omri began to reign over Israel, and Ahab the son of Omri reigned over Israel in Samaria twenty-two years.And Ahab the son of Omri did evil in the sight of the Lord, more than all who were before him.And as if it had been a light thing for him to walk in the sins of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, he took for his wife Jezebel the daughter of Ethbaal king of the Sidonians, and went and served Baal and worshiped him.He erected an altar for Baal in the house of Baal, which he built in Samaria.And Ahab made an Asherah. Ahab did more to provoke the Lord, the God of Israel, to anger than all the kings of Israel who were before him.

Therefore, just as sin came into the world through one man, and death through sin, and so death spread to all men because all sinned—

Then the men of Ephraim said to him,“ What is this that you have done to us, not to call us when you went to fight against Midian?” And they accused him fiercely.

“ On the west side shall be the standard of the camp of Ephraim by their companies, the chief of the people of Ephraim being Elishama the son of Ammihud,his company as listed being 40,500.And next to him shall be the tribe of Manasseh, the chief of the people of Manasseh being Gamaliel the son of Pedahzur,his company as listed being 32,200.

“ Let the Lord, the God of the spirits of all flesh, appoint a man over the congregationwho shall go out before them and come in before them, who shall lead them out and bring them in, that the congregation of the Lord may not be as sheep that have no shepherd.”So the Lord said to Moses,“ Take Joshua the son of Nun, a man in whom is the Spirit, and lay your hand on him.Make him stand before Eleazar the priest and all the congregation, and you shall commission him in their sight.You shall invest him with some of your authority, that all the congregation of the people of Israel may obey.And he shall stand before Eleazar the priest, who shall inquire for him by the judgment of the Urim before the Lord. At his word they shall go out, and at his word they shall come in, both he and all the people of Israel with him, the whole congregation.”And Moses did as the Lord commanded him. He took Joshua and made him stand before Eleazar the priest and the whole congregation,and he laid his hands on him and commissioned him as the Lord directed through Moses.

The men of Ephraim were called to arms, and they crossed to Zaphon and said to Jephthah,“ Why did you cross over to fight against the Ammonites and did not call us to go with you? We will burn your house over you with fire.”

And he answered,“ I have not troubled Israel, but you have, and your father’s house, because you have abandoned the commandments of the Lord and followed the Baals.Now therefore send and gather all Israel to me at Mount Carmel, and the 450 prophets of Baal and the 400 prophets of Asherah, who eat at Jezebel’s table.”

And they abandoned all the commandments of the Lord their God, and made for themselves metal images of two calves; and they made an Asherah and worshiped all the host of heaven and served Baal.And they burned their sons and their daughters as offerings and used divination and omens and sold themselves to do evil in the sight of the Lord, provoking him to anger.Therefore the Lord was very angry with Israel and removed them out of his sight. None was left but the tribe of Judah only.

Then Jeroboam built Shechem in the hill country of Ephraim and lived there. And he went out from there and built Penuel.

And the standard of the camp of the people of Ephraim set out by their companies, and over their company was Elishama the son of Ammihud.
