“ Of what importance to me are your many sacrifices?” says the LORD.“ I am stuffed with burnt sacrifices of rams and the fat from steers. The blood of bulls, lambs, and goats I do not want.When you enter my presence, do you actually think I want this– animals trampling on my courtyards?Do not bring any more meaningless offerings; I consider your incense detestable! You observe new moon festivals, Sabbaths, and convocations, but I cannot tolerate sin-stained celebrations!I hate your new moon festivals and assemblies; they are a burden that I am tired of carrying.When you spread out your hands in prayer, I look the other way; when you offer your many prayers, I do not listen, because your hands are covered with blood.

And every priest stands day after day serving and offering the same sacrifices again and again– sacrifices that can never take away sins.

With what should I enter the LORD’s presence? With what should I bow before the sovereign God? Should I enter his presence with burnt offerings, with year-old calves?Will the LORD accept a thousand rams, or ten thousand streams of olive oil? Should I give him my firstborn child as payment for my rebellion, my offspring– my own flesh and blood– for my sin?He has told you, O man, what is good, and what the LORD really wants from you: He wants you to promote justice, to be faithful, and to live obediently before your God.

And this is my covenant with them, when I take away their sins.”

On the next day John saw Jesus coming toward him and said,“ Look, the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!

And you know that Jesus was revealed to take away sins, and in him there is no sin.

This was a symbol for the time then present, when gifts and sacrifices were offered that could not perfect the conscience of the worshiper.

And to love him with all your heart, with all your mind, and with all your strength and to love your neighbor as yourself is more important than all burnt offerings and sacrifices.”

When he says above,“ Sacrifices and offerings and whole burnt offerings and sin- offerings you did not desire nor did you take delight in them”( which are offered according to the law),

Return to the LORD and repent! Say to him:“ Completely forgive our iniquity; accept our penitential prayer, that we may offer the praise of our lips as sacrificial bulls.

“ I absolutely despise your festivals! I get no pleasure from your religious assemblies!Even if you offer me burnt and grain offerings, I will not be satisfied; I will not look with favor on your peace offerings of fattened calves.

and he entered once for all into the Most Holy Place not by the blood of goats and calves but by his own blood, and so he himself secured eternal redemption.For if the blood of goats and bulls and the ashes of a young cow sprinkled on those who are defiled consecrated them and provided ritual purity,

Certainly you do not want a sacrifice, or else I would offer it; you do not desire a burnt sacrifice.

For I delight in faithfulness, not simply in sacrifice; I delight in acknowledging God, not simply in whole burnt offerings.

The LORD said to the people of Judah,“ The LORD God of Israel who rules over all says:‘ You might as well go ahead and add the meat of your burnt offerings to that of the other sacrifices and eat it, too!Consider this: When I spoke to your ancestors after I brought them out of Egypt, I did not merely give them commands about burnt offerings and sacrifices.

I take no delight when they offer up to me frankincense that comes from Sheba or sweet-smelling cane imported from a faraway land. I cannot accept the burnt offerings they bring me. I get no pleasure from the sacrifices they offer to me.’

The one who slaughters a bull also strikes down a man; the one who sacrifices a lamb also breaks a dog’s neck; the one who presents an offering includes pig’s blood with it; the one who offers incense also praises an idol. They have decided to behave this way; they enjoy these disgusting practices.

I am not condemning you because of your sacrifices, or because of your burnt sacrifices that you continually offer me.I do not need to take a bull from your household or goats from your sheepfolds.For every wild animal in the forest belongs to me, as well as the cattle that graze on a thousand hills.I keep track of every bird in the hills, and the insects of the field are mine.Even if I were hungry, I would not tell you, for the world and all it contains belong to me.
