indeed, wine betrays him; he is arrogant and never at rest. Because he is as greedy as the grave and like death is never satisfied, he gathers to himself all the nations and takes captive all the peoples.

“ Wine makes the Babylonians do foolish things. They are proud. They never rest. Like the grave, they are always hungry for more. Like death, they are never satisfied. They gather all the nations to themselves. They take all those people away as prisoners.

“ Moreover, wine is a traitor, an arrogant man who is never at rest. His greed is as wide as Sheol; like death he has never enough. He gathers for himself all nations and collects as his own all peoples.”

Wealth is treacherous, and the arrogant are never at rest. They open their mouths as wide as the grave, and like death, they are never satisfied. In their greed they have gathered up many nations and swallowed many peoples.

Hell and destruction are never full; so the eyes of man are never satisfied.

Wine[ is] a mocker, strong drink[ is] raging: and whosoever is deceived thereby is not wise.

Thou hast indeed smitten Edom, and thine heart hath lifted thee up: glory[ of this], and tarry at home: for why shouldest thou meddle to[ thy] hurt, that thou shouldest fall,[ even] thou, and Judah with thee?

He that loveth silver shall not be satisfied with silver; nor he that loveth abundance with increase: this[ is] also vanity.

Belshazzar the king made a great feast to a thousand of his lords, and drank wine before the thousand.Belshazzar, whiles he tasted the wine, commanded to bring the golden and silver vessels which his father Nebuchadnezzar had taken out of the temple which[ was] in Jerusalem; that the king, and his princes, his wives, and his concubines, might drink therein.Then they brought the golden vessels that were taken out of the temple of the house of God which[ was] at Jerusalem; and the king, and his princes, his wives, and his concubines, drank in them.They drank wine, and praised the gods of gold, and of silver, of brass, of iron, of wood, and of stone.

Woe unto them that rise up early in the morning,[ that] they may follow strong drink; that continue until night,[ till] wine inflame them!And the harp, and the viol, the tabret, and pipe, and wine, are in their feasts: but they regard not the work of the LORD, neither consider the operation of his hands.

[ It is] not for kings, O Lemuel,[ it is] not for kings to drink wine; nor for princes strong drink:Lest they drink, and forget the law, and pervert the judgment of any of the afflicted.

Though the LORD[ be] high, yet hath he respect unto the lowly: but the proud he knoweth afar off.

Ye shall not be unpunished: for I will call for a sword upon all the inhabitants of the earth, saith the LORD of hosts.

Woe unto[ them that are] mighty to drink wine, and men of strength to mingle strong drink:Which justify the wicked for reward, and take away the righteousness of the righteous from him!

What do ye imagine against the LORD? he will make an utter end: affliction shall not rise up the second time.For while[ they be] folden together[ as] thorns, and while they are drunken[ as] drunkards, they shall be devoured as stubble fully dry.

But he giveth more grace. Wherefore he saith, God resisteth the proud, but giveth grace unto the humble.

And that ye study to be quiet, and to do your own business, and to work with your own hands, as we commanded you;

But when his heart was lifted up, and his mind hardened in pride, he was deposed from his kingly throne, and they took his glory from him:And he was driven from the sons of men; and his heart was made like the beasts, and his dwelling[ was] with the wild asses: they fed him with grass like oxen, and his body was wet with the dew of heaven; till he knew that the most high God ruled in the kingdom of men, and[ that] he appointeth over it whomsoever he will.And thou his son, O Belshazzar, hast not humbled thine heart, though thou knewest all this;But hast lifted up thyself against the Lord of heaven; and they have brought the vessels of his house before thee, and thou, and thy lords, thy wives, and thy concubines, have drunk wine in them; and thou hast praised the gods of silver, and gold, of brass, iron, wood, and stone, which see not, nor hear, nor know: and the God in whose hand thy breath[ is], and whose[ are] all thy ways, hast thou not glorified:

[ There is] a generation, O how lofty are their eyes! and their eyelids are lifted up.[ There is] a generation, whose teeth[ are as] swords, and their jaw teeth[ as] knives, to devour the poor from off the earth, and the needy from[ among] men.The horseleach hath two daughters,[ crying], Give, give. There are three[ things that] are never satisfied,[ yea], four[ things] say not,[ It is] enough:The grave; and the barren womb; the earth[ that] is not filled with water; and the fire[ that] saith not,[ It is] enough.

They that see thee shall narrowly look upon thee,[ and] consider thee,[ saying, Is] this the man that made the earth to tremble, that did shake kingdoms;[ That] made the world as a wilderness, and destroyed the cities thereof;[ that] opened not the house of his prisoners?

Call together the archers against Babylon: all ye that bend the bow, camp against it round about; let none thereof escape: recompense her according to her work; according to all that she hath done, do unto her: for she hath been proud against the LORD, against the Holy One of Israel.

Behold, I will send and take all the families of the north, saith the LORD, and Nebuchadrezzar the king of Babylon, my servant, and will bring them against this land, and against the inhabitants thereof, and against all these nations round about, and will utterly destroy them, and make them an astonishment, and an hissing, and perpetual desolations.

Howbeit he meaneth not so, neither doth his heart think so; but[ it is] in his heart to destroy and cut off nations not a few.For he saith,[ Are] not my princes altogether kings?[ Is] not Calno as Carchemish?[ is] not Hamath as Arpad?[ is] not Samaria as Damascus?As my hand hath found the kingdoms of the idols, and whose graven images did excel them of Jerusalem and of Samaria;Shall I not, as I have done unto Samaria and her idols, so do to Jerusalem and her idols?Wherefore it shall come to pass,[ that] when the Lord hath performed his whole work upon mount Zion and on Jerusalem, I will punish the fruit of the stout heart of the king of Assyria, and the glory of his high looks.For he saith, By the strength of my hand I have done[ it], and by my wisdom; for I am prudent: and I have removed the bounds of the people, and have robbed their treasures, and I have put down the inhabitants like a valiant[ man]:

In their heat I will make their feasts, and I will make them drunken, that they may rejoice, and sleep a perpetual sleep, and not wake, saith the LORD.

Behold, his soul[ which] is lifted up is not upright in him: but the just shall live by his faith.

We have heard of the pride of Moab;[ he is] very proud:[ even] of his haughtiness, and his pride, and his wrath:[ but] his lies[ shall] not[ be] so.

Prepare the table, watch in the watchtower, eat, drink: arise, ye princes,[ and] anoint the shield.

Woe unto them that join house to house,[ that] lay field to field, till[ there be] no place, that they may be placed alone in the midst of the earth!

The lofty looks of man shall be humbled, and the haughtiness of men shall be bowed down, and the LORD alone shall be exalted in that day.For the day of the LORD of hosts[ shall be] upon every[ one that is] proud and lofty, and upon every[ one that is] lifted up; and he shall be brought low:

And the loftiness of man shall be bowed down, and the haughtiness of men shall be made low: and the LORD alone shall be exalted in that day.

Because thou hast spoiled many nations, all the remnant of the people shall spoil thee; because of men’s blood, and[ for] the violence of the land, of the city, and of all that dwell therein.Woe to him that coveteth an evil covetousness to his house, that he may set his nest on high, that he may be delivered from the power of evil!Thou hast consulted shame to thy house by cutting off many people, and hast sinned[ against] thy soul.
