Wine is a mocker, strong drink a brawler, and whoever is led astray by it is not wise.

You have indeed struck down Edom, and your heart has lifted you up. Be content with your glory, and stay at home, for why should you provoke trouble so that you fall, you and Judah with you?”

He who loves money will not be satisfied with money, nor he who loves wealth with his income; this also is vanity.

Woe to those who rise early in the morning, that they may run after strong drink, who tarry late into the evening as wine inflames them!They have lyre and harp, tambourine and flute and wine at their feasts, but they do not regard the deeds of the Lord, or see the work of his hands.

It is not for kings, O Lemuel, it is not for kings to drink wine, or for rulers to take strong drink,lest they drink and forget what has been decreed and pervert the rights of all the afflicted.

For though the Lord is high, he regards the lowly, but the haughty he knows from afar.

Woe to those who are heroes at drinking wine, and valiant men in mixing strong drink,who acquit the guilty for a bribe, and deprive the innocent of his right!

What do you plot against the Lord? He will make a complete end; trouble will not rise up a second time.For they are like entangled thorns, like drunkards as they drink; they are consumed like stubble fully dried.

But he gives more grace. Therefore it says,“ God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.”

and to aspire to live quietly, and to mind your own affairs, and to work with your hands, as we instructed you,

There are those— how lofty are their eyes, how high their eyelids lift!There are those whose teeth are swords, whose fangs are knives, to devour the poor from off the earth, the needy from among mankind.The leech has two daughters: Give and Give. Three things are never satisfied; four never say,“ Enough”:Sheol, the barren womb, the land never satisfied with water, and the fire that never says,“ Enough.”

Those who see you will stare at you and ponder over you:‘ Is this the man who made the earth tremble, who shook kingdoms,who made the world like a desert and overthrew its cities, who did not let his prisoners go home?’

“ Summon archers against Babylon, all those who bend the bow. Encamp around her; let no one escape. Repay her according to her deeds; do to her according to all that she has done. For she has proudly defied the Lord, the Holy One of Israel.

Is not Samaria like Damascus?As my hand has reached to the kingdoms of the idols, whose carved images were greater than those of Jerusalem and Samaria,shall I not do to Jerusalem and her idols as I have done to Samaria and her images?”When the Lord has finished all his work on Mount Zion and on Jerusalem, he will punish the speech of the arrogant heart of the king of Assyria and the boastful look in his eyes.For he says:“ By the strength of my hand I have done it, and by my wisdom, for I have understanding; I remove the boundaries of peoples, and plunder their treasures; like a bull I bring down those who sit on thrones.

While they are inflamed I will prepare them a feast and make them drunk, that they may become merry, then sleep a perpetual sleep and not wake, declares the Lord.

“ Behold, his soul is puffed up; it is not upright within him, but the righteous shall live by his faith.

We have heard of the pride of Moab— how proud he is!— of his arrogance, his pride, and his insolence; in his idle boasting he is not right.

They prepare the table, they spread the rugs, they eat, they drink. Arise, O princes; oil the shield!

Woe to those who join house to house, who add field to field, until there is no more room, and you are made to dwell alone in the midst of the land.

The haughty looks of man shall be brought low, and the lofty pride of men shall be humbled, and the Lord alone will be exalted in that day.For the Lord of hosts has a day against all that is proud and lofty, against all that is lifted up— and it shall be brought low;
