But Joseph replied,“ Don’t be afraid of me. Am I God, that I can punish you?

But Joseph said to them,“ Don’t be afraid. Am I in the place of God?

Dear friends, never take revenge. Leave that to the righteous anger of God. For the Scriptures say,“ I will take revenge; I will pay them back,” says the Lord.

Then Jacob became furious with Rachel.“ Am I God?” he asked.“ He’s the one who has kept you from having children!”

When the king of Israel read the letter, he tore his clothes in dismay and said,“ Am I God, that I can give life and take it away? Why is this man asking me to heal someone with leprosy? I can see that he’s just trying to pick a fight with me.”

He doesn’t care how great a person may be, and he pays no more attention to the rich than to the poor. He made them all.In a moment they die. In the middle of the night they pass away; the mighty are removed without human hand.“ For God watches how people live; he sees everything they do.No darkness is thick enough to hide the wicked from his eyes.We don’t set the time when we will come before God in judgment.He brings the mighty to ruin without asking anyone, and he sets up others in their place.He knows what they do, and in the night he overturns and destroys them.He strikes them down because they are wicked, doing it openly for all to see.For they turned away from following him. They have no respect for any of his ways.They cause the poor to cry out, catching God’s attention. He hears the cries of the needy.But if he chooses to remain quiet, who can criticize him? When he hides his face, no one can find him, whether an individual or a nation.

For we know the one who said,“ I will take revenge. I will pay them back.” He also said,“ The Lord will judge his own people.”

But don’t be upset, and don’t be angry with yourselves for selling me to this place. It was God who sent me here ahead of you to preserve your lives.

I will take revenge; I will pay them back. In due time their feet will slip. Their day of disaster will arrive, and their destiny will overtake them.’

But the whole group was startled and frightened, thinking they were seeing a ghost!“ Why are you frightened?” he asked.“ Why are your hearts filled with doubt?

But Jesus spoke to them at once.“ Don’t be afraid,” he said.“ Take courage. I am here!”
