I saw a dream that made me afraid. As I lay in bed the fancies and the visions of my head alarmed me.

Then Daniel, whose name was Belteshazzar, was dismayed for a while, and his thoughts alarmed him. The king answered and said,“ Belteshazzar, let not the dream or the interpretation alarm you.” Belteshazzar answered and said,“ My lord, may the dream be for those who hate you and its interpretation for your enemies!

The magicians tried by their secret arts to produce gnats, but they could not. So there were gnats on man and beast.Then the magicians said to Pharaoh,“ This is the finger of God.” But Pharaoh’s heart was hardened, and he would not listen to them, as the Lord had said.

“ When you come into the land that the Lord your God is giving you, you shall not learn to follow the abominable practices of those nations.There shall not be found among you anyone who burns his son or his daughter as an offering, anyone who practices divination or tells fortunes or interprets omens, or a sorcereror a charmer or a medium or a necromancer or one who inquires of the dead,for whoever does these things is an abomination to the Lord. And because of these abominations the Lord your God is driving them out before you.You shall be blameless before the Lord your God,for these nations, which you are about to dispossess, listen to fortune-tellers and to diviners. But as for you, the Lord your God has not allowed you to do this.

Some of the Epicurean and Stoic philosophers also conversed with him. And some said,“ What does this babbler wish to say?” Others said,“ He seems to be a preacher of foreign divinities”— because he was preaching Jesus and the resurrection.

and the spirit of the Egyptians within them will be emptied out, and I will confound their counsel; and they will inquire of the idols and the sorcerers, and the mediums and the necromancers;

“ Here is the end of the matter. As for me, Daniel, my thoughts greatly alarmed me, and my color changed, but I kept the matter in my heart.”

But the magicians did the same by their secret arts and made frogs come up on the land of Egypt.

Daniel answered the king and said,“ No wise men, enchanters, magicians, or astrologers can show to the king the mystery that the king has asked,but there is a God in heaven who reveals mysteries, and he has made known to King Nebuchadnezzar what will be in the latter days. Your dream and the visions of your head as you lay in bed are these:

And I, Daniel, was overcome and lay sick for some days. Then I rose and went about the king’s business, but I was appalled by the vision and did not understand it.

Let no one deceive himself. If anyone among you thinks that he is wise in this age, let him become a fool that he may become wise.For the wisdom of this world is folly with God. For it is written,“ He catches the wise in their craftiness,”and again,“ The Lord knows the thoughts of the wise, that they are futile.”

In the second year of the reign of Nebuchadnezzar, Nebuchadnezzar had dreams; his spirit was troubled, and his sleep left him.Then the king commanded that the magicians, the enchanters, the sorcerers, and the Chaldeans be summoned to tell the king his dreams. Therefore show me the dream and its interpretation.”They answered a second time and said,“ Let the king tell his servants the dream, and we will show its interpretation.”The king answered and said,“ I know with certainty that you are trying to gain time, because you see that the word from me is firm—if you do not make the dream known to me, there is but one sentence for you. You have agreed to speak lying and corrupt words before me till the times change. Therefore tell me the dream, and I shall know that you can show me its interpretation.”The Chaldeans answered the king and said,“ There is not a man on earth who can meet the king’s demand, for no great and powerful king has asked such a thing of any magician or enchanter or Chaldean.The thing that the king asks is difficult, and no one can show it to the king except the gods, whose dwelling is not with flesh.”

For it is written,“ I will destroy the wisdom of the wise, and the discernment of the discerning I will thwart.”

When Joseph came to them in the morning, he saw that they were troubled.

I hear, and my body trembles; my lips quiver at the sound; rottenness enters into my bones; my legs tremble beneath me. Yet I will quietly wait for the day of trouble to come upon people who invade us.

The king declared to the wise men of Babylon,“ Whoever reads this writing, and shows me its interpretation, shall be clothed with purple and have a chain of gold around his neck and shall be the third ruler in the kingdom.”Then all the king’s wise men came in, but they could not read the writing or make known to the king the interpretation.

There is a man in your kingdom in whom is the spirit of the holy gods. In the days of your father, light and understanding and wisdom like the wisdom of the gods were found in him, and King Nebuchadnezzar, your father— your father the king— made him chief of the magicians, enchanters, Chaldeans, and astrologers,

The princes of Zoan are utterly foolish; the wisest counselors of Pharaoh give stupid counsel. How can you say to Pharaoh,“ I am a son of the wise, a son of ancient kings”?Where then are your wise men? Let them tell you that they might know what the Lord of hosts has purposed against Egypt.The princes of Zoan have become fools, and the princes of Memphis are deluded; those who are the cornerstones of her tribes have made Egypt stagger.

Stand fast in your enchantments and your many sorceries, with which you have labored from your youth; perhaps you may be able to succeed; perhaps you may inspire terror.You are wearied with your many counsels; let them stand forth and save you, those who divide the heavens, who gaze at the stars, who at the new moons make known what shall come upon you.

And the magicians could not stand before Moses because of the boils, for the boils came upon the magicians and upon all the Egyptians.

“ If a person turns to mediums and necromancers, whoring after them, I will set my face against that person and will cut him off from among his people.

He frustrates the devices of the crafty, so that their hands achieve no success.He catches the wise in their own craftiness, and the schemes of the wily are brought to a quick end.

The friendship of the Lord is for those who fear him, and he makes known to them his covenant.

And Moses was instructed in all the wisdom of the Egyptians, and he was mighty in his words and deeds.

They said to him,“ We have had dreams, and there is no one to interpret them.” And Joseph said to them,“ Do not interpretations belong to God? Please tell them to me.”
