饑荒非常嚴重，全地都絕了糧，埃及地和迦南地都因饑荒耗損了。約瑟收集了埃及地和迦南地所有的銀子，就是眾人買糧的銀子，約瑟就把那些銀子都帶到法老的宮裏。埃及地和迦南地的銀子都花光了，埃及眾人到約瑟那裏，說：「我們的銀子都用完了，求你給我們糧食吧！我們為甚麼要死在你面前呢？」約瑟說：「銀子若是用完了，可以把你們的牲畜賣給我，我就以你們的牲畜換糧食給你們。」於是他們把牲畜帶到約瑟那裏，約瑟就拿糧食換了他們的馬、羊、牛、驢；那一年他因換他們一切的牲畜，用糧食養活他們。那一年過去，第二年他們又來到約瑟那裏，對他說：「不瞞我主，我們的銀子都花光了，牲畜也都歸於我主了。我們在我主面前，除了自己的身體和土地以外，一無所剩。你為甚麼要眼看着我們人死地荒呢？求你用糧食買我們和我們的地，我們和我們的地就要為法老效力。求你給我們種子，使我們可以存活，不致死亡，土地也不致荒蕪。」於是，約瑟為法老買了埃及所有的土地，埃及人因饑荒所迫，都賣了自己的田地；那些地都歸給法老了。至於百姓，從埃及邊界的一端到另一端，約瑟使他們作奴隸。只有祭司的土地，約瑟沒有買，因為祭司從法老領取薪俸，靠法老的薪俸過活，所以沒有賣自己的土地。約瑟對百姓說：「看哪，我今日為法老買了你們和你們的土地。看哪，這些種子是給你們的，你們可以耕種土地。將來收割的時候，你們要把五分之一納給法老，另外四分可以給你們作田地的種子，作你們和你們全家大小的食物。」他們說：「你救了我們的性命，願我們在我主眼前蒙恩，我們情願作法老的奴隸。」
