約伯的三個朋友、提幔人以利法、書亞人比勒達、拿瑪人瑣法、聽說他遭遇了這一切災禍，就各從自己的地方來；他們一同約會而來，向他表示悲傷，安慰他。

永恆主這麼說：『在拉瑪聽見有聲音，悲苦痛哭的聲音，是拉結哭她的兒女，不肯因兒女的緣故而受安慰，因為他們不在了。』

當患難的日子我尋求主；夜間我直伸出手來禱告，總不懈怠；我的心不肯受安慰。

我們對他說：『我們是老實人，並不是探子。

以色列說：『夠了；我兒子約瑟還活着；我未死以前一定要去看他。』

以色列在那地居住的時候，如便去和他父親的妾辟拉同寢；以色列聽見了。雅各有十二個兒子。利亞的兒子是雅各的長子如便，還有西緬、利未、猶大、以薩迦、西布倫。拉結的兒子是約瑟、便雅憫。拉結的婢女辟拉的兒子、是但、拿弗他利。利亞的婢女悉帕的兒子、是迦得、亞設：以上這些人是雅各的兒子，就是在巴旦亞蘭的時候生的。

現在你們又要把這個從我面前帶走。他若遭害，那便是你們使我白髮蒼蒼，淒淒慘慘地下陰間去了。」我父親的命和這兒童的命，簡直是連在一起。如今我回到你僕人我父親那裏，若沒有兒童和我們一同去，他見沒有兒童一同回去，他是一定死的。這便是我們使你僕人我們的父親白髮蒼蒼，悲悲慘慘地下陰間去了。

拉班回答雅各說：『這些女兒是我的女兒；這些孩子是我的孩子，這些羊羣是我的羊羣：其實凡你所看見的、都是我的：對我這些女兒、或是她們所生的孩子們，我今天能作甚麼呢？
