当日，拉班把有纹的、有斑的公山羊，一切有点的、有斑的、有少许白色的母山羊，以及小绵羊中所有黑色的，都挑出来，交在他儿子们的手里，又使自己和雅各相隔三天的路程。雅各就牧放拉班其余的羊。雅各拿杨树、杏树、枫树的嫩枝，把皮剥出白色的条纹，使枝子露出白色来。他把剥了皮的枝子对着羊群，插在羊喝水的水沟和水槽里。羊来喝水的时候，它们彼此交配。羊对着枝子交配，就生下有纹的、有点的、有斑的来。雅各把小绵羊分出来，让羊对着拉班羊群中有纹的和所有黑色的。于是他把自己的羊群分开，不叫它们和拉班的羊混在一起。当肥壮的羊交配的时候，雅各就把枝子插在水沟里，使羊对着枝子交配。可是当瘦弱的羊交配的时候，他就不插枝子。这样，瘦弱的就归拉班，肥壮的就归雅各。于是这人极其发达，拥有许多的羊群、奴仆、婢女、骆驼和驴。雅各听见拉班儿子们的话，说：“雅各把我们父亲所有的都夺去了！他从我们父亲所拥有的获得这一切的财富。”

女子啊，要倾听，要思想，要侧耳而听！不要记念你本族和你父家，

这样，神把你们父亲的牲畜拿来赐给我了。
