If therefore the whole church be come together into one place, and all speak with tongues, and there come in[ those that are] unlearned, or unbelievers, will they not say that ye are mad?

The LORD bringeth the counsel of the heathen to nought: he maketh the devices of the people of none effect.

For he that speaketh in an[ unknown] tongue speaketh not unto men, but unto God: for no man understandeth[ him]; howbeit in the spirit he speaketh mysteries.But he that prophesieth speaketh unto men[ to] edification, and exhortation, and comfort.He that speaketh in an[ unknown] tongue edifieth himself; but he that prophesieth edifieth the church.I would that ye all spake with tongues, but rather that ye prophesied: for greater[ is] he that prophesieth than he that speaketh with tongues, except he interpret, that the church may receive edifying.Now, brethren, if I come unto you speaking with tongues, what shall I profit you, except I shall speak to you either by revelation, or by knowledge, or by prophesying, or by doctrine?And even things without life giving sound, whether pipe or harp, except they give a distinction in the sounds, how shall it be known what is piped or harped?For if the trumpet give an uncertain sound, who shall prepare himself to the battle?So likewise ye, except ye utter by the tongue words easy to be understood, how shall it be known what is spoken? for ye shall speak into the air.There are, it may be, so many kinds of voices in the world, and none of them[ is] without signification.Therefore if I know not the meaning of the voice, I shall be unto him that speaketh a barbarian, and he that speaketh[ shall be] a barbarian unto me.

Also I heard the voice of the Lord, saying, Whom shall I send, and who will go for us? Then said I, Here[ am] I; send me.

He removeth away the speech of the trusty, and taketh away the understanding of the aged.

And they knew not that Joseph understood[ them]; for he spake unto them by an interpreter.

Lo, I will bring a nation upon you from far, O house of Israel, saith the LORD: it[ is] a mighty nation, it[ is] an ancient nation, a nation whose language thou knowest not, neither understandest what they say.

These[ are] the sons of Ham, after their families, after their tongues, in their countries,[ and] in their nations.

And the LORD came down to see the city and the tower, which the children of men builded.

He disappointeth the devices of the crafty, so that their hands cannot perform[ their] enterprise.He taketh the wise in their own craftiness: and the counsel of the froward is carried headlong.

He that sitteth in the heavens shall laugh: the Lord shall have them in derision.

The LORD shall bring a nation against thee from far, from the end of the earth,[ as swift] as the eagle flieth; a nation whose tongue thou shalt not understand;

By these were the isles of the Gentiles divided in their lands; every one after his tongue, after their families, in their nations.

And the LORD God said, Behold, the man is become as one of us, to know good and evil: and now, lest he put forth his hand, and take also of the tree of life, and eat, and live for ever:

Destroy, O Lord,[ and] divide their tongues: for I have seen violence and strife in the city.

These[ are] the families of the sons of Noah, after their generations, in their nations: and by these were the nations divided in the earth after the flood.
