This is the only thing I want to find out from you: did you receive the Spirit by works of the Law, or by hearing with faith?

Let me ask you this one question: Did you receive the Holy Spirit by obeying the law of Moses? Of course not! You received the Spirit because you believed the message you heard about Christ.

However, they did not all heed the good news; for Isaiah says,“ Lord, who has believed our report?”So faith comes from hearing, and hearing by the word of Christ.

in order that in Christ Jesus the blessing of Abraham would come to the Gentiles, so that we would receive the promise of the Spirit through faith.

And God, who knows the heart, testified to them giving them the Holy Spirit, just as He also did to us;

God also testifying with them, both by signs and wonders, and by various miracles and by gifts of the Holy Spirit according to His own will.

He said to them,“ Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed?” And they said to him,“ On the contrary, we have not even heard if there is a Holy Spirit.”And he said,“ Into what then were you baptized?” And they said,“ Into John’s baptism.”Paul said,“ John baptized with a baptism of repentance, telling the people to believe in Him who was coming after him, that is, in Jesus.”When they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.And when Paul had laid hands upon them, the Holy Spirit came on them and they began speaking with tongues and prophesying.

While Peter was still speaking these words, the Holy Spirit fell upon all those who were listening to the message.All the Jewish believers who came with Peter were amazed, because the gift of the Holy Spirit had also been poured out on the Gentiles.For they were hearing them speaking with tongues and exalting God. Then Peter responded,“ Surely no one can refuse the water for these to be baptized, who have received the Holy Spirit just as we did, can he?”

who came down and prayed for them that they would receive the Holy Spirit.

Peter said to them,“ Repent, and each of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins; and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.

So then, does He who provides you with the Spirit and works miracles among you, do it by works of the Law, or by hearing with faith?

And as I began to speak, the Holy Spirit fell upon them just as He did upon us at the beginning.And I remembered the word of the Lord, how He used to say,‘ John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.’Therefore, if God gave them the same gift as He also gave to us after believing in the Lord Jesus Christ, who was I that I could stand in God’s way?”When they heard this, they quieted down and glorified God, saying,“ Well then, God has also granted to the Gentiles the repentance that leads to life.”

For it is impossible, in the case of those who have once been enlightened and have tasted of the heavenly gift and have been made partakers of the Holy Spirit,

In Him, you also, after listening to the message of truth, the gospel of your salvation— having also believed, you were sealed in Him with the Holy Spirit of the promise,who is a first installment of our inheritance, in regard to the redemption of God’s own possession, to the praise of His glory.

For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith to faith; as it is written:“ But the righteous one will live by faith.”

But to each one is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good.For to one is given the word of wisdom through the Spirit, and to another the word of knowledge according to the same Spirit;to another faith by the same Spirit, and to another gifts of healing by the one Spirit,and to another the effecting of miracles, and to another prophecy, and to another the distinguishing of spirits, to another various kinds of tongues, and to another the interpretation of tongues.But one and the same Spirit works all these things, distributing to each one individually just as He wills.For just as the body is one and yet has many parts, and all the parts of the body, though they are many, are one body, so also is Christ.For by one Spirit we were all baptized into one body, whether Jews or Greeks, whether slaves or free, and we were all made to drink of one Spirit.

It was revealed to them that they were not serving themselves, but you, in these things which now have been announced to you through those who preached the gospel to you by the Holy Spirit sent from heaven— things into which angels long to look.

For if one comes and preaches another Jesus whom we have not preached, or you receive a different spirit which you have not received, or a different gospel which you have not accepted, this you tolerate very well!
