扫罗却在摧毁教会，他挨家挨户搜寻，把男女信徒抓进监里。

“我是犹太人，生于基利迦的大数，在耶路撒冷长大，曾在迦玛列门下严格地按着我们祖先的律法接受教育，像你们今日一样热心事奉上帝。我曾经把信奉这道的男女信徒抓进监狱，迫害他们，置他们于死地。大祭司和众长老都可以为我作证。我还拿着他们写给大马士革的犹太人的信去拘捕那里的信徒，押回耶路撒冷受刑。

在众使徒中我最微不足道，根本不配称为使徒，因为我曾迫害上帝的教会。

扫罗逃到耶路撒冷后，曾设法与当地的门徒联络，可是他们都怕他，不相信他是门徒。

听的人都大吃一惊，说：“他不就是那在耶路撒冷迫害信徒的人吗？他到这里来不是要把大马士革的信徒押去见祭司长吗？”

“我从小在本族和耶路撒冷为人如何，犹太人都知道。他们认识我很久了，如果他们肯作证的话，他们可以证明我从小就属于犹太教中最严格的法利赛派。

扫罗继续用凶狠的话恐吓主的门徒。他去见大祭司，要取得授权书到大马士革的各会堂搜捕信耶稣的人，无论男女，都要把他们押回耶路撒冷。

我自己也曾经认为应该尽一切可能反对拿撒勒人耶稣。我在耶路撒冷就是这样做的。我得到祭司长的授权，把许多圣徒关进监狱。他们被判死刑，我也表示赞同。我多次在各会堂惩罚他们，逼他们说亵渎的话，我对他们深恶痛绝，甚至到国外的城镇去追捕、迫害他们。

亚拿尼亚回答说：“主啊！我听见许多人说他对耶路撒冷的信徒大加迫害。他来这里是得到祭司长的授权，要拘捕所有求告你名的人。”

尽管我从前是个亵渎上帝、迫害和侮辱信徒的人，但我仍然蒙了怜悯，因为那时我无知，还没有信耶稣。

论热心，我曾经迫害教会；论律法要求的义，我是无可指责的。

当时，扫罗也赞成杀死司提凡。从那天起，耶路撒冷的教会开始遭到极大的迫害。除了使徒之外，门徒都分散到犹太和撒玛利亚各地。
