“‘ They will throw their silver into the streets, and their gold will be treated as a thing unclean. Their silver and gold will not be able to deliver them in the day of the Lord’s wrath. It will not satisfy their hunger or fill their stomachs, for it has caused them to stumble into sin.

It will not be able to satisfy their hunger. Their stomachs can’t be filled with it. Their silver and gold have tripped them up. It has made them fall into sin.

“ They will throw their money in the streets, tossing it out like worthless trash. Their silver and gold won’t save them on that day of the Lord’s anger. It will neither satisfy nor feed them, for their greed can only trip them up.

Neither their silver nor their gold will be able to deliver them in the day of Yahweh’s wrath, but the whole land will be devoured by the fire of his jealousy; for he will make an end, yes, a terrible end, of all those who dwell in the land.

Riches don’t profit in the day of wrath, but righteousness delivers from death.

“ Son of man, these men have taken their idols into their heart, and put the stumbling block of their iniquity before their face. Should I be inquired of at all by them?Therefore speak to them, and tell them,‘ The Lord Yahweh says:“ Every man of the house of Israel who takes his idols into his heart, and puts the stumbling block of his iniquity before his face, and comes to the prophet; I Yahweh will answer him therein according to the multitude of his idols;

“‘“ For everyone of the house of Israel, or of the strangers who live in Israel, who separates himself from me, and takes his idols into his heart, and puts the stumbling block of his iniquity before his face, and comes to the prophet to inquire for himself of me; I Yahweh will answer him by myself.

Because they ministered to them before their idols, and became a stumbling block of iniquity to the house of Israel. Therefore I have lifted up my hand against them,” says the Lord Yahweh,“ and they will bear their iniquity.

“ Though wickedness is sweet in his mouth, though he hide it under his tongue,though he spare it, and will not let it go, but keep it still within his mouth;yet his food in his bowels is turned. It is cobra venom within him.He has swallowed down riches, and he will vomit them up again. God will cast them out of his belly.He will suck cobra venom. The viper’s tongue will kill him.He will not look at the rivers, the flowing streams of honey and butter.He will restore that for which he labored, and will not swallow it down. He will not rejoice according to the substance that he has gotten.For he has oppressed and forsaken the poor. He has violently taken away a house, and he will not build it up.“ Because he knew no quietness within him, he will not save anything of that in which he delights.There was nothing left that he didn’t devour, therefore his prosperity will not endure.In the fullness of his sufficiency, distress will overtake him. The hand of everyone who is in misery will come on him.When he is about to fill his belly, God will cast the fierceness of his wrath on him. It will rain on him while he is eating.

I will tell my soul,“ Soul, you have many goods laid up for many years. Take your ease, eat, drink, and be merry.”’“ But God said to him,‘ You foolish one, tonight your soul is required of you. The things which you have prepared— whose will they be?’

You shall defile the overlaying of your engraved images of silver, and the plating of your molten images of gold. You shall cast them away as an unclean thing. You shall tell it,“ Go away!”

Why do you spend money for that which is not bread, and your labor for that which doesn’t satisfy? Listen diligently to me, and eat that which is good, and let your soul delight itself in richness.

In that day, men shall cast away their idols of silver and their idols of gold, which have been made for themselves to worship, to the moles and to the bats,

For what will it profit a man, if he gains the whole world, and forfeits his life? Or what will a man give in exchange for his life?

He who loves silver shall not be satisfied with silver; nor he who loves abundance, with increase: this also is vanity.

They didn’t turn from their cravings. Their food was yet in their mouths,when the anger of God went up against them, killed some of their fattest, and struck down the young men of Israel.

David says,“ Let their table be made a snare, a trap, a stumbling block, and a retribution to them.

Therefore they arose and fled in the twilight, and left their tents, and their horses, and their donkeys, even the camp as it was, and fled for their life.When these lepers came to the outermost part of the camp, they went into one tent, and ate and drank, and carried away silver, gold, and clothing, and went and hid it. Then they came back, and entered into another tent, and carried things from there also, and went and hid them.

They went after them to the Jordan; and behold, all the path was full of garments and equipment which the Syrians had cast away in their haste. The messengers returned, and told the king.
