‘ The Lord God says this:“ Because Moab and Seir say,‘ Behold, the house of Judah is like all the nations,’

Then Jacob sent messengers ahead of himself to his brother Esau in the land of Seir, the country of Edom.

“ Son of man, set your face toward the mountains of Israel, and prophesy against them

They make shrewd plans against Your people, And conspire together against Your treasured ones.They have said,“ Come, and let’s wipe them out as a nation, So that the name of Israel will no longer be remembered.”For they have conspired together with one mind; They make a covenant against You:The tents of Edom and the Ishmaelites, Moab and the Hagrites;Gebal, Ammon, and Amalek, Philistia with the inhabitants of Tyre;Assyria also has joined them; They have become a help to the children of Lot. SelahDeal with them as with Midian, As with Sisera and Jabin at the river of Kishon,Who were destroyed at En dor, Who became like dung for the ground.Make their nobles like Oreb and Zeeb, And all their leaders like Zebah and Zalmunna,Who said,“ Let’s possess for ourselves The pastures of God.”My God, make them like the whirling dust, Like chaff before the wind.Like fire that burns the forest, And like a flame that sets the mountains on fire,So pursue them with Your heavy gale, And terrify them with Your storm.Fill their faces with dishonor, So that they will seek Your name, Lord.May they be ashamed and dismayed forever, And may they be humiliated and perish,So that they will know that You alone, whose name is the Lord, Are the Most High over all the earth.

“ Son of man, set your face toward the south, and speak prophetically against the south and prophesy against the forest land of the Negev,

Now Amaziah gathered his courage and led his people out, and went to the Valley of Salt, and struck and killed ten thousand of the sons of Seir.The sons of Judah also captured ten thousand alive and brought them to the top of the cliff, and threw them down from the top of the cliff so that they were all dashed to pieces.But the troops whom Amaziah sent back, those not going with him to battle, raided the cities of Judah from Samaria to Beth horon, and struck and killed three thousand of them, and plundered a large amount of spoils.Now after Amaziah came from slaughtering the Edomites, he brought the gods of the sons of Seir and set them up as his gods. Then he bowed down before them and burned incense to them.

Who is this who comes from Edom, With garments of glowing colors from Bozrah, This One who is majestic in His apparel, Marching in the greatness of His strength?“ It is I, the One who speaks in righteousness, mighty to save.”Why is Your apparel red, And Your garments like one who treads in the wine press?“ I have trodden the wine trough alone, And from the peoples there was no one with Me. I also trod them in My anger And trampled them in My wrath; And their lifeblood is sprinkled on My garments, And I stained all My clothes.For the day of vengeance was in My heart, And My year of redemption has come.I looked, but there was no one to help, And I was astonished and there was no one to uphold; So My own arm brought salvation to Me, And My wrath upheld Me.I trampled down the peoples in My anger And made them drunk with My wrath, And I poured out their lifeblood on the earth.”

do not provoke them, for I will not give you any of their land, not even as much as a footprint, because I have given Mount Seir to Esau as a possession.

Concerning Edom. This is what the Lord of armies says:“ Is there no longer any wisdom in Teman? Has good advice been lost by the prudent? Has their wisdom decayed?Flee away, turn back, dwell in the depths, You inhabitants of Dedan, For I will bring the disaster of Esau upon him At the time I punish him.If grape pickers came to you, Would they not leave gleanings? If thieves came by night, They would destroy only what was sufficient for them.But I have stripped Esau bare, I have uncovered his hiding places So that he will not be able to conceal himself; His offspring have been destroyed along with his brothers And his neighbors, and he no longer exists.Leave your orphans behind, I will keep them alive; And let your widows trust in Me.”For this is what the Lord says:“ Behold, those who were not sentenced to drink the cup will certainly drink it, so are you the one who will be held completely blameless? You will not be held blameless, but you will certainly drink it.For I have sworn by Myself,” declares the Lord,“ that Bozrah will become an object of horror, a disgrace, a wasteland, and a curse; and all its cities will become permanent ruins.”I have heard a message from the Lord, And a messenger is being sent among the nations, saying,“ Gather yourselves together and come against her, And rise up for battle!”“ For behold, I have made you small among the nations, Despised among people.As for the terror you cause, The arrogance of your heart has deceived you, You who live in the clefts of the rock, Who occupy the height of the hill. Though you make your nest as high as an eagle’s, I will bring you down from there,” declares the Lord.“ Edom will become an object of horror; everyone who passes by it will be appalled and will hiss at all its wounds.Like the overthrow of Sodom and Gomorrah with its neighbors,” says the Lord,“ no one will live there, nor will anyone of mankind reside in it.Behold, one will come up like a lion from the thicket of the Jordan to a perennially watered pasture; for in an instant I will chase him away from it, and I will appoint over it whoever is chosen. For who is like Me, and who will summon Me into court? And who then is the shepherd who can stand against Me?”Therefore hear the plan of the Lord which He has planned against Edom, and His purposes which He has in mind against the inhabitants of Teman: they will certainly drag them off, even the little ones of the flock; He will certainly make their pasture desolate because of them.The earth has quaked at the noise of their downfall. There is an outcry! The noise of it has been heard at the Red Sea.Behold, He will mount up and swoop like an eagle, and spread out His wings against Bozrah; and the hearts of the warriors of Edom on that day will be like the heart of a woman in labor.

This is what the Lord says:“ For three offenses of Edom, and for four, I will not revoke its punishment, Because he pursued his brother with the sword And stifled his compassion; His anger also tore continually, And he maintained his fury forever.So I will send fire upon Teman And it will consume the citadels of Bozrah.”

When they began singing and praising, the Lord set ambushes against the sons of Ammon, Moab, and Mount Seir, who had come against Judah; so they were struck down.For the sons of Ammon and Moab rose up against the inhabitants of Mount Seir, completely destroying them; and when they had finished with the inhabitants of Seir, they helped to destroy one another.

and pray in my behalf, that speech may be given to me in the opening of my mouth, to make known with boldness the mystery of the gospel,

“ Behold, the days are coming,” declares the Lord,“ that I will punish all who are circumcised and yet uncircumcised—Egypt, Judah, Edom, the sons of Ammon, Moab, and all those inhabiting the desert who trim the hair on their temples; for all the nations are uncircumcised, and all the house of Israel are uncircumcised of heart.”

Rejoice and be joyful, daughter of Edom, Who lives in the land of Uz; But the cup will pass to you as well, You will become drunk and expose yourself.The punishment of your wrongdoing has been completed, daughter of Zion; He will no longer exile you. But He will punish your wrongdoing, daughter of Edom; He will expose your sins!

Come near, you nations, to hear; and listen, you peoples! Let the earth and all it contains hear, and the world and all that springs from it.For the Lord’s anger is against all the nations, And His wrath against all their armies. He has utterly destroyed them, He has turned them over to slaughter.So their slain will be thrown out, And their corpses will give off their stench, And the mountains will be drenched with their blood.And all the heavenly lights will wear away, And the sky will be rolled up like a scroll; All its lights will also wither away As a leaf withers from the vine, Or as one withers from the fig tree.For My sword has drunk its fill in heaven; Behold it shall descend for judgment upon Edom, And upon the people whom I have designated for destruction.The sword of the Lord is filled with blood, It drips with fat, with the blood of lambs and goats, With the fat of the kidneys of rams. For the Lord has a sacrifice in Bozrah, And a great slaughter in the land of Edom.Wild oxen will also fall with them And young bulls with strong ones; So their land will be soaked with blood, And their dust become greasy with fat.For the Lord has a day of vengeance, A year of retribution for the cause of Zion.Its streams will be turned into pitch, And its loose earth into brimstone, And its land will become burning pitch.It will not be extinguished night or day; Its smoke will go up forever. From generation to generation it will be desolate; None will pass through it forever and ever.But pelican and hedgehog will possess it, And owl and raven will dwell in it; And He will stretch over it the line of desolation And the plumb line of emptiness.Its nobles— there is no one there Whom they may proclaim king— And all its officials will be nothing.Thorns will come up in its fortified towers, Weeds and thistles in its fortified cities; It will also be a haunt of jackals And a habitat of ostriches.The desert creatures will meet with the wolves, The goat also will cry to its kind. Yes, the night bird will settle there And will find herself a resting place.The tree snake will make its nest and lay eggs there, And it will hatch and gather them under its protection. Yes, the hawks will be gathered there, Every one with its kind.Seek from the book of the Lord, and read: Not one of these will be missing; None will lack its mate. For His mouth has commanded, And His Spirit has gathered them.He has cast the lot for them, And His hand has divided it to them by the measuring line. They shall possess it forever; From generation to generation they will dwell in it.

Now behold, the sons of Ammon, Moab, and Mount Seir, whom You did not allow Israel to invade when they came out of the land of Egypt( for they turned aside from them and did not destroy them),

“ There also is Edom, its kings and all its princes, who despite all their might are laid with those killed by the sword; they will lie with the uncircumcised and with those who go down to the pit.

“ Son of man, set your face against Jerusalem, and speak prophetically against the sanctuaries and prophesy against the land of Israel;

‘ The Lord God says this:“ Because Edom has acted against the house of Judah by taking vengeance, and has incurred great guilt, and avenged themselves upon them,”therefore this is what the Lord God says:“ I will also reach out with My hand against Edom and eliminate human and animal life from it. And I will turn it into ruins; from Teman even to Dedan they will fall by the sword.And I will inflict My vengeance on Edom by the hand of My people Israel. Therefore, they will act in Edom in accordance with My anger and My wrath; so they will know My vengeance,” declares the Lord God.

“ Because of violence to your brother Jacob, Shame will cover you, And you will be eliminated forever.On the day that you stood aloof, On the day that strangers carried off his wealth, And foreigners entered his gate And cast lots for Jerusalem— You too were as one of them.Do not gloat over your brother’s day, The day of his misfortune. And do not rejoice over the sons of Judah On the day of their destruction; Yes, do not boast On the day of their distress.Do not enter the gate of My people On the day of their disaster. You indeed, do not gloat over their catastrophe On the day of their disaster. And do not lay a hand on their wealth On the day of their disaster.Do not stand at the crossroads To eliminate their survivors; And do not hand over their refugees On the day of their distress.

The vision of Obadiah. This is what the Lord God says concerning Edom— We have heard a report from the Lord, And a messenger has been sent among the nations saying,“ Arise, and let’s go up against her for battle”—

For the Lord God helps Me, Therefore, I am not disgraced; Therefore, I have made My face like flint, And I know that I will not be ashamed.

So Esau lived in the hill country of Seir; Esau is Edom.These then are the records of the generations of Esau the father of the Edomites in the hill country of Seir.

“ Son of man, set your face against the sons of Ammon and prophesy against them,

To Isaac I gave Jacob and Esau, and to Esau I gave Mount Seir, to possess it; but Jacob and his sons went down to Egypt.
