“‘ Yet the people of Israel rebelled against me in the wilderness. They did not follow my decrees but rejected my laws— by which the person who obeys them will live— and they utterly desecrated my Sabbaths. So I said I would pour out my wrath on them and destroy them in the wilderness.

“‘ “But in the desert the people of Israel refused to obey me. They did not follow my rules. They turned their backs on my laws. The person who obeys them will live by them. They totally misused my Sabbath days. So I said I would pour out my great anger on them. I would destroy them in the desert.

But the house of Israel rebelled against me in the wilderness. They did not walk in my statutes but rejected my rules, by which, if a person does them, he shall live; and my Sabbaths they greatly profaned.“ Then I said I would pour out my wrath upon them in the wilderness, to make a full end of them.

“ But the people of Israel rebelled against me, and they refused to obey my decrees there in the wilderness. They wouldn’t obey my regulations even though obedience would have given them life. They also violated my Sabbath days. So I threatened to pour out my fury on them, and I made plans to utterly consume them in the wilderness.

“‘ But they rebelled against me and were unwilling to listen to me. None of them threw away the abhorrent things that they prized, and they did not abandon the idols of Egypt. So I considered pouring out my wrath on them, exhausting my anger against them within the land of Egypt.

As for the foreigners who join themselves to the LORD to minister to him, to love the name of the LORD, and to become his servants— all who keep the Sabbath without desecrating it and who hold firmly to my covenant—

For they did not practice my ordinances but rejected my statutes and profaned my Sabbaths, and their eyes were fixed on their fathers’ idols.

You provoked the LORD at Horeb, and he was angry enough with you to destroy you.

The LORD said to Moses,“ How long will these people despise me? How long will they not trust in me despite all the signs I have performed among them?I will strike them with a plague and destroy them. Then I will make you into a greater and mightier nation than they are.”

Your corpses will fall in this wilderness— all of you who were registered in the census, the entire number of you twenty years old or more— because you have complained about me.

Now leave me alone, so that my anger can burn against them and I can destroy them. Then I will make you into a great nation.”

none of the men who have seen my glory and the signs I performed in Egypt and in the wilderness, and have tested me these ten times and did not obey me,

“ The LORD said to me,‘ Get up and go down immediately from here. For your people whom you brought out of Egypt have acted corruptly. You had quickly turned from the way the LORD had commanded for you.So I took hold of the two tablets and threw them from my hands, shattering them before your eyes.I fell down like the first time in the presence of the LORD for forty days and forty nights; I did not eat food or drink water because of all the sin you committed, doing what was evil in the LORD’s sight and angering him.I was afraid of the fierce anger the LORD had directed against you, because he was about to destroy you. But again the LORD listened to me on that occasion.The LORD was angry enough with Aaron to destroy him. But I prayed for Aaron at that time also.I took the sinful calf you had made and burned it. I crushed it, thoroughly grinding it to powder as fine as dust, and threw its dust into the stream that came down from the mountain.“ You continued to provoke the LORD at Taberah, Massah, and Kibroth-hattaavah.When the LORD sent you from Kadesh-barnea, he said,‘ Go up and possess the land I have given you’; you rebelled against the command of the LORD your God. You did not believe or obey him.You have been rebelling against the LORD ever since I have known you.

The LORD says: I will not relent from punishing Judah for three crimes, even four, because they have rejected the instruction of the LORD and have not kept his statutes. The lies that their ancestors followed have led them astray.

if you reject my statutes and despise my ordinances, and do not observe all my commands— and break my covenant,

Consequently, anyone who rejects this does not reject man, but God, who gives you his Holy Spirit.

They soon forgot his works and would not wait for his counsel.They were seized with craving in the wilderness and tested God in the desert.He gave them what they asked for, but sent a wasting disease among them.In the camp they were envious of Moses and of Aaron, the LORD’s holy one.The earth opened up and swallowed Dathan; it covered the assembly of Abiram.Fire blazed throughout their assembly; flames consumed the wicked.At Horeb they made a calf and worshiped the cast metal image.They exchanged their glory for the image of a grass-eating ox.They forgot God their Savior, who did great things in Egypt,wondrous works in the land of Ham, awe-inspiring acts at the Red Sea.So he said he would have destroyed them— if Moses his chosen one had not stood before him in the breach to turn his wrath away from destroying them.They despised the pleasant land and did not believe his promise.They grumbled in their tents and did not listen to the LORD.So he raised his hand against them with an oath that he would make them fall in the desertand would disperse their descendants among the nations, scattering them throughout the lands.They aligned themselves with Baal of Peor and ate sacrifices offered to lifeless gods.They angered the LORD with their deeds, and a plague broke out against them.But Phinehas stood up and intervened, and the plague was stopped.It was credited to him as righteousness throughout all generations to come.They angered the LORD at the Waters of Meribah, and Moses suffered because of them,for they embittered his spirit, and he spoke rashly with his lips.

They have quickly turned from the way I commanded them; they have made for themselves an image of a calf. They have bowed down to it, sacrificed to it, and said,‘ Israel, these are your gods, who brought you up from the land of Egypt.’”

They are doing the same thing to you that they have done to me, since the day I brought them out of Egypt until this day, abandoning me and worshiping other gods.

because they rejected my ordinances, profaned my Sabbaths, and did not follow my statutes. For their hearts went after their idols.

These were Issachar’s clans numbered by their registered men: 64,300.

For I know how rebellious and stiff-necked you are. If you are rebelling against the LORD now, while I am still alive, how much more will you rebel after I am dead!

“ Get away from this community so that I may consume them instantly.” But they fell facedown.

Anyone who disregarded the law of Moses died without mercy, based on the testimony of two or three witnesses.How much worse punishment do you think one will deserve who has trampled on the Son of God, who has regarded as profane the blood of the covenant by which he was sanctified, and who has insulted the Spirit of grace?

He will certainly be cut off, because he has despised the LORD’s word and broken his command; his guilt remains on him.”While the Israelites were in the wilderness, they found a man gathering wood on the Sabbath day.Those who found him gathering wood brought him to Moses, Aaron, and the entire community.They placed him in custody because it had not been decided what should be done to him.Then the LORD told Moses,“ The man is to be put to death. The entire community is to stone him outside the camp.”So the entire community brought him outside the camp and stoned him to death, as the LORD had commanded Moses.

For the land abandoned by them will make up for its Sabbaths by lying desolate without the people, while they make amends for their iniquity, because they rejected my ordinances and abhorred my statutes.

How often they rebelled against him in the wilderness and grieved him in the desert.They constantly tested God and provoked the Holy One of Israel.

But our ancestors acted arrogantly; they became stiff-necked and did not listen to your commands.They refused to listen and did not remember your wonders you performed among them. They became stiff-necked and appointed a leader to return to their slavery in Egypt. But you are a forgiving God, gracious and compassionate, slow to anger and abounding in faithful love, and you did not abandon them.Even after they had cast an image of a calf for themselves and said,“ This is your god who brought you out of Egypt,” and they had committed terrible blasphemies,

But they rebelled and grieved his Holy Spirit. So he became their enemy and fought against them.

Do not harden your hearts as at Meribah, as on that day at Massah in the wildernesswhere your ancestors tested me; they tried me, though they had seen what I did.For forty years I was disgusted with that generation; I said,“ They are a people whose hearts go astray; they do not know my ways.”So I swore in my anger,“ They will not enter my rest.”

The one who has contempt for instruction will pay the penalty, but the one who respects a command will be rewarded.

Why then have you despised the LORD’s command by doing what I consider evil? You struck down Uriah the Hethite with the sword and took his wife as your own wife— you murdered him with the Ammonite’s sword.
