“ When you take the census of the children of Israel for their number, then every man shall give a ransom for himself to the Lord, when you number them, that there may be no plague among them when you number them.

爾若核以色列人之數、必使各出贖命之銀獻於主、以免核數時遇災害、

“ When you take a census of the Israelites to count them, each one must pay the Lord a ransom for his life at the time he is counted. Then no plague will come on them when you number them.

“ Make a list of the Israelites and count them. When you do, each one must pay the Lord for his life at the time he is counted. Then a plague will not come on them when you count them.

“ When you take the census of the people of Israel, then each shall give a ransom for his life to the Lord when you number them, that there be no plague among them when you number them.

“ Whenever you take a census of the people of Israel, each man who is counted must pay a ransom for himself to the Lord. Then no plague will strike the people as you count them.

Therefore we have brought an offering for the Lord, what every man found of ornaments of gold: armlets and bracelets and signet rings and earrings and necklaces, to make atonement for ourselves before the Lord.”

Joab the son of Zeruiah began a census, but he did not finish, for wrath came upon Israel because of this census; nor was the number recorded in the account of the chronicles of King David.

And the silver from those who were numbered of the congregation was one hundred talents and one thousand seven hundred and seventy-five shekels, according to the shekel of the sanctuary:a bekah for each man( that is, half a shekel, according to the shekel of the sanctuary), for everyone included in the numbering from twenty years old and above, for six hundred and three thousand, five hundred and fifty men.

None of them can by any means redeem his brother, Nor give to God a ransom for him—

just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many.”

knowing that you were not redeemed with corruptible things, like silver or gold, from your aimless conduct received by tradition from your fathers,but with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot.

So the king called Jehoiada the chief priest, and said to him,“ Why have you not required the Levites to bring in from Judah and from Jerusalem the collection, according to the commandment of Moses the servant of the Lord and of the assembly of Israel, for the tabernacle of witness?”

either three years of famine, or three months to be defeated by your foes with the sword of your enemies overtaking you, or else for three days the sword of the Lord— the plague in the land, with the angel of the Lord destroying throughout all the territory of Israel.’ Now consider what answer I should take back to Him who sent me.”

Again the anger of the Lord was aroused against Israel, and He moved David against them to say,“ Go, number Israel and Judah.”So the king said to Joab the commander of the army who was with him,“ Now go throughout all the tribes of Israel, from Dan to Beersheba, and count the people, that I may know the number of the people.”And Joab said to the king,“ Now may the Lord your God add to the people a hundred times more than there are, and may the eyes of my Lord the king see it. But why does my Lord the king desire this thing?”Nevertheless the king’s word prevailed against Joab and against the captains of the army. Therefore Joab and the captains of the army went out from the presence of the king to count the people of Israel.And they crossed over the Jordan and camped in Aroer, on the right side of the town which is in the midst of the ravine of Gad, and toward Jazer.Then they came to Gilead and to the land of Tahtim Hodshi; they came to Dan Jaan and around to Sidon;and they came to the stronghold of Tyre and to all the cities of the Hivites and the Canaanites. Then they went out to South Judah as far as Beersheba.So when they had gone through all the land, they came to Jerusalem at the end of nine months and twenty days.Then Joab gave the sum of the number of the people to the king. And there were in Israel eight hundred thousand valiant men who drew the sword, and the men of Judah were five hundred thousand men.And David’s heart condemned him after he had numbered the people. So David said to the Lord,“ I have sinned greatly in what I have done; but now, I pray, O Lord, take away the iniquity of Your servant, for I have done very foolishly.”Now when David arose in the morning, the word of the Lord came to the prophet Gad, David’s seer, saying,“ Go and tell David,‘ Thus says the Lord:“ I offer you three things; choose one of them for yourself, that I may do it to you.”’”So Gad came to David and told him; and he said to him,“ Shall seven years of famine come to you in your land? Or shall you flee three months before your enemies, while they pursue you? Or shall there be three days’ plague in your land? Now consider and see what answer I should take back to Him who sent me.”And David said to Gad,“ I am in great distress. Please let us fall into the hand of the Lord, for His mercies are great; but do not let me fall into the hand of man.”So the Lord sent a plague upon Israel from the morning till the appointed time. From Dan to Beersheba seventy thousand men of the people died.

“ Take a census of all the congregation of the children of Israel from twenty years old and above, by their fathers’ houses, all who are able to go to war in Israel.”So Moses and Eleazar the priest spoke with them in the plains of Moab by the Jordan, across from Jericho, saying:“ Take a census of the people from twenty years old and above, just as the Lord commanded Moses and the children of Israel who came out of the land of Egypt.”

“ Take a census of all the congregation of the children of Israel, by their families, by their fathers’ houses, according to the number of names, every male individually,from twenty years old and above— all who are able to go to war in Israel. You and Aaron shall number them by their armies.And with you there shall be a man from every tribe, each one the head of his father’s house.“ These are the names of the men who shall stand with you: from Reuben, Elizur the son of Shedeur;

who gave Himself a ransom for all, to be testified in due time,

Because there is wrath, beware lest He take you away with one blow; For a large ransom would not help you avoid it.

Then He is gracious to him, and says,‘ Deliver him from going down to the Pit; I have found a ransom’;

So the Lord sent a plague upon Israel, and seventy thousand men of Israel fell.

For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many.”
