“ When you take a census of the Israelites to count them, each one must pay the Lord a ransom for his life at the time he is counted. Then no plague will come on them when you number them.

洗魯雅的兒子約押開始統計人數，但沒有完成，因為耶和華因此事而向以色列人發烈怒，因此統計的數目沒有收錄在大衛王記上。

按聖所的秤計算，從登記的人口所收到的銀子是三點四二噸。這是所有登記的、年齡在二十歲以上的人所繳納的銀子，共有六十萬三千五百五十人，每人交六克銀子，以聖所的秤為準。

卻不能救贖自己的生命，也無法向上帝付生命的贖價。

正如人子不是來受人服侍，而是來服侍人，並且犧牲性命，作許多人的贖價。」

要知道，你們從傳統的、沒有意義的生活中被救贖出來，不是靠金銀等會朽壞的東西，而是靠無瑕無疵的代罪羔羊——基督的寶血。

王就召來耶何耶大大祭司，問他：「你為什麼不吩咐利未人到耶路撒冷和猶大去收稅呢？這稅是耶和華的僕人摩西和以色列的會眾定的，以備聖幕之用。」

或三年的饑荒，或被敵人追殺三個月，或國中遭三天的瘟疫，讓耶和華的天使在以色列全境施行毀滅。請你考慮好後告訴我，我好回覆那差我來的。」

耶和華又向以色列人發怒，祂促使大衛來對付他們，讓大衛統計以色列和猶大的人口。大衛對統領軍隊的約押說：「你去走遍以色列各支派，從但到別示巴，統計以色列和猶大的人口，讓我知道國民的數目。」約押說：「我主我王，願你的上帝耶和華使國民增加百倍，讓你親眼看到。但我主我王為什麼要統計人口呢？」但大衛不聽約押和其他將領的規勸。他們只好去統計以色列的人數。他們過了約旦河，在谷中亞羅珥城南面安營，又經過迦得前往雅謝。然後，他們到基列、他停·合示地區、但·雅安，繞到西頓，再去泰爾的堡壘及希未人和迦南人的城邑。最後，他們到了猶大南部的別示巴。他們花了九個月零二十天的時間，走遍全國，最後回到耶路撒冷。約押把統計的人數奏告大衛：「以色列有八十萬英勇的刀兵，猶大有五十萬。」大衛統計了人口以後，內心不安，就對耶和華說：「我做這事犯了大罪。耶和華啊，求你赦免僕人的罪，我做了極其愚昧的事。」第二天早上，耶和華對大衛的先見——迦得先知說：「你去告訴大衛，耶和華說，『我有三樣災禍，你可以選擇讓我降哪一樣給你。』」迦得就來見大衛，對他說：「你願意國內有七年饑荒呢？還是被敵人追殺三個月呢？還是國內發生三天瘟疫呢？請你考慮好後告訴我，我好回覆那差我來的。」大衛說：「我實在為難！不過我寧願落在耶和華的手中，也不願落在人的手中，因為耶和華有無限的憐憫。」於是，那天早晨，耶和華在以色列降下瘟疫，瘟疫持續了三天，從但到別示巴共有七萬人死亡。

「你們要統計以色列全體會眾，按宗族登記所有二十歲以上、有作戰能力的男子。」摩西和以利亞撒祭司就在約旦河邊、耶利哥對面的摩押平原對以色列人說：「你們要按照耶和華的吩咐統計二十歲以上的男子。」以下是從埃及出來的以色列人。

「你要按以色列人的宗族和家系統計人口，登記所有男子的姓名。你和亞倫要一隊一隊地統計以色列人中二十歲以上、有作戰能力的男子。每一支派要有一個人來協助你們。他們都是各宗族的族長，名單如下。「呂便支派示丟珥的兒子以利蘇、

祂捨命作全人類的贖價，這在所定的時候已顯明出來。

當心，不可因憤怒而嘲罵，不可因贖金大就偏離正道。

上帝就會憐憫他，說，『別讓他下墳墓，我已得到他的贖金。』

於是，耶和華在以色列降下瘟疫，有七萬人死亡。

因為就連人子也不是來受人服侍，而是來服侍人，並且犧牲性命，作許多人的贖價。」
