洗鲁雅的儿子约押开始统计人数，但没有完成，因为耶和华因此事而向以色列人发烈怒，因此统计的数目没有收录在大卫王记上。

按圣所的秤计算，从登记的人口所收到的银子是三点四二吨。这是所有登记的、年龄在二十岁以上的人所缴纳的银子，共有六十万三千五百五十人，每人交六克银子，以圣所的秤为准。

却不能救赎自己的生命，也无法向上帝付生命的赎价。

正如人子不是来受人服侍，而是来服侍人，并且牺牲性命，作许多人的赎价。”

要知道，你们从传统的、没有意义的生活中被救赎出来，不是靠金银等会朽坏的东西，而是靠无瑕无疵的代罪羔羊——基督的宝血。

王就召来耶何耶大大祭司，问他：“你为什么不吩咐利未人到耶路撒冷和犹大去收税呢？这税是耶和华的仆人摩西和以色列的会众定的，以备圣幕之用。”

或三年的饥荒，或被敌人追杀三个月，或国中遭三天的瘟疫，让耶和华的天使在以色列全境施行毁灭。请你考虑好后告诉我，我好回复那差我来的。”

耶和华又向以色列人发怒，祂促使大卫来对付他们，让大卫统计以色列和犹大的人口。大卫对统领军队的约押说：“你去走遍以色列各支派，从但到别示巴，统计以色列和犹大的人口，让我知道国民的数目。”约押说：“我主我王，愿你的上帝耶和华使国民增加百倍，让你亲眼看到。但我主我王为什么要统计人口呢？”但大卫不听约押和其他将领的规劝。他们只好去统计以色列的人数。他们过了约旦河，在谷中亚罗珥城南面安营，又经过迦得前往雅谢。然后，他们到基列、他停·合示地区、但·雅安，绕到西顿，再去泰尔的堡垒及希未人和迦南人的城邑。最后，他们到了犹大南部的别示巴。他们花了九个月零二十天的时间，走遍全国，最后回到耶路撒冷。约押把统计的人数奏告大卫：“以色列有八十万英勇的刀兵，犹大有五十万。”大卫统计了人口以后，内心不安，就对耶和华说：“我做这事犯了大罪。耶和华啊，求你赦免仆人的罪，我做了极其愚昧的事。”第二天早上，耶和华对大卫的先见——迦得先知说：“你去告诉大卫，耶和华说，‘我有三样灾祸，你可以选择让我降哪一样给你。’”迦得就来见大卫，对他说：“你愿意国内有七年饥荒呢？还是被敌人追杀三个月呢？还是国内发生三天瘟疫呢？请你考虑好后告诉我，我好回复那差我来的。”大卫说：“我实在为难！不过我宁愿落在耶和华的手中，也不愿落在人的手中，因为耶和华有无限的怜悯。”于是，那天早晨，耶和华在以色列降下瘟疫，瘟疫持续了三天，从但到别示巴共有七万人死亡。

“你们要统计以色列全体会众，按宗族登记所有二十岁以上、有作战能力的男子。”摩西和以利亚撒祭司就在约旦河边、耶利哥对面的摩押平原对以色列人说：“你们要按照耶和华的吩咐统计二十岁以上的男子。”以下是从埃及出来的以色列人。

“你要按以色列人的宗族和家系统计人口，登记所有男子的姓名。你和亚伦要一队一队地统计以色列人中二十岁以上、有作战能力的男子。每一支派要有一个人来协助你们。他们都是各宗族的族长，名单如下。“吕便支派示丢珥的儿子以利苏、

祂舍命作全人类的赎价，这在所定的时候已显明出来。

当心，不可因愤怒而嘲骂，不可因赎金大就偏离正道。

上帝就会怜悯他，说，‘别让他下坟墓，我已得到他的赎金。’

于是，耶和华在以色列降下瘟疫，有七万人死亡。

因为就连人子也不是来受人服侍，而是来服侍人，并且牺牲性命，作许多人的赎价。”
