「另外，你們聽過那吩咐古人的話：『不可起假誓。你所起的誓，總要向主償還。』但是我告訴你們：根本不可起誓。不可指著天起誓，因為天是神的寶座；不可指著地起誓，因為地是神的腳凳；不可用耶路撒冷起誓，因為耶路撒冷是那大君王的城；也不可指著自己的頭起誓，因為你不能使一根頭髮變白或變黑。你們的話語應該如此：是，就說是；不是，就說不是。再多說，就是出於那惡者。

人本來指著比自己更大的起誓；對他們，所起的誓就是了結一切爭執的確據；為此，神想要對那些繼承應許的人格外表明他的計劃是不能更改的，就用所起的誓來保證。

耶穌卻沉默不語。大祭司又對他說：「我命令你指著永生的神起誓，告訴我們你是不是基督——神的兒子？」耶穌回答他，說：「你已經說了。不過我告訴你們：將來你們會看見人子坐在全能者的右邊，在天上的雲彩中來臨。」

你要向神獻上感謝為祭，又要向至高者還你所許的願。在患難的日子裡，你當呼求我，我必搭救你，而你將榮耀我。」但神對惡人說：「你憑什麼講述我的律例，口中提起我的約呢？

「你們這些瞎眼的領路人有禍了！你們說：『如果有人指著聖所起誓，算不得什麼；但如果有人指著聖所裡的金子起誓，就必須遵守。』你們這些又愚拙又瞎眼的人哪，到底哪一樣更重要呢？是金子，還是使金子成聖的聖所呢？你們還說：『如果有人指著祭壇起誓，算不得什麼；但如果有人指著祭壇上的祭物起誓，就必須遵守。』你們這些瞎眼的人哪，到底哪一樣更重要呢？是祭物，還是使祭物成聖的祭壇呢？所以，指著祭壇起誓的，就是指著祭壇和祭壇上的一切起誓；指著聖所起誓的，就是指著聖所和住在裡面的那一位起誓；指著天起誓的，就是指著神的寶座和坐在寶座上的那一位起誓。

免得我飽足了，就否認你，說：「耶和華是誰呢？」又免得我陷入窮困，就去偷竊，以致干犯了我神的名。

我求告神為我的靈魂見證：我沒有再往哥林多去，是因為顧惜你們。

大衛年間，連續有三年的饑荒。大衛尋求耶和華的面，耶和華說：「這與掃羅和他家殺人流血有關，因為他曾經殺害基遍人。」王就召來基遍人，向他們問話。這基遍人不是以色列人，而是亞摩利人中的餘剩者。以色列人曾向他們起過誓，掃羅卻因他對以色列人和猶大人的熱心而圖謀要殺滅他們。
