你要記得，這四十年耶和華－你的神在曠野一路引導你，是要磨煉你，考驗你，為要知道你的心如何，是否願意遵守他的誡命。他磨煉你，任你飢餓，將你和你列祖所不認識的嗎哪賜給你吃，使你知道，人活着，不是單靠食物，乃是靠耶和華口裏所出的一切話。

看，我將這地擺在你們面前。你們要進去得這地，就是耶和華向你們列祖亞伯拉罕、以撒、雅各起誓要賜給他們和他們後裔為業之地。」

摩西從摩押平原登上尼波山，到了耶利哥對面的毗斯迦山頂。耶和華把全地指給他看：從基列到但，拿弗他利全地，以法蓮、瑪拿西的地，猶大全地直到西邊的海，尼革夫，從棕樹城耶利哥的平原到瑣珥。耶和華對他說：「這就是我向亞伯拉罕、以撒、雅各起誓應許之地，說：『我必將這地賜給你的後裔。』現在我使你親眼看見了，你卻不得過到那裏去。」

於是他們對他說：「你行甚麼神蹟，好讓我們看見而信你呢？你到底要做甚麼呢？我們的祖宗在曠野吃過嗎哪，如經上寫着：『他從天上賜下糧食來給他們吃。』」於是耶穌對他們說：「我實實在在地告訴你們，那從天上來的糧不是摩西賜給你們的，那從天上來的真糧是我父賜給你們的。因為神的糧就是那位從天上降下來，並且賜生命給世界的。」於是他們對他說：「主啊，請常常把這糧賜給我們！」耶穌對他們說：「我就是生命的糧。到我這裏來的，絕不飢餓；信我的，永不乾渴。可是，我告訴過你們，你們已經看見我，還是不信。凡父所賜給我的人，必到我這裏來；到我這裏來的，我總不丟棄他。因為我從天上降下來，不是要按自己的意願行，而是要遵行差我來那位的旨意。差我來那位的旨意就是：他所賜給我的，要我一個也不失落，並且在末日使他復活。因為我父的旨意是要使每一個見了子而信的人得永生，並且在末日我要使他復活。」猶太人因為耶穌說「我是從天上降下來的糧」，就私下議論他，說：「這不是約瑟的兒子耶穌嗎？我們豈不認得他的父母嗎？現在他怎麼說『我是從天上降下來的』呢？」耶穌回答，對他們說：「你們不要彼此私下議論。若不是差我來的父吸引人，就沒有人能到我這裏來；到我這裏來的，在末日我要使他復活。在先知書上寫着：『他們都要蒙神教導。』凡聽了父的教導而學習的，都到我這裏來。這不是說有人看見過父，惟獨從神來的，他才看見過父。我實實在在地告訴你們，信的人有永生。我就是生命的糧。你們的祖宗在曠野吃過嗎哪，還是死了。這是從天上降下來的糧，使人吃了就不死。我就是從天上降下來生命的糧；人若吃這糧，必永遠活着。我為世人的生命所賜下的糧就是我的肉。」因此，猶太人彼此爭論說：「這個人怎能把他的肉給我們吃呢？」耶穌對他們說：「我實實在在地告訴你們，你們若不吃人子的肉，不喝人子的血，在你們裏面就沒有生命。吃我肉、喝我血的人就有永生，並且在末日我要使他復活。我的肉是真正可吃的；我的血是真正可喝的。吃我肉、喝我血的人常在我裏面，我也常在他裏面。永生的父怎樣差我來，我又怎樣因父活着，照樣，吃我肉的人也要因我活着。這是從天上降下來的糧，不像你們的祖宗吃過嗎哪還是死了；吃這糧的人將永遠活着。」

降嗎哪像雨，給他們吃，將天上的糧食賜給他們。各人就吃大能者的食物；他賜下糧食，使他們飽足。

從亞巴琳山脈起行，安營在約旦河邊，耶利哥對面的摩押平原。他們在摩押平原，沿着約旦河安營，從伯‧耶施末直到亞伯‧什亭。耶和華在約旦河邊，耶利哥對面的摩押平原吩咐摩西說：

你從天上賜下糧食給他們充飢，使水從磐石流出給他們解渴。你吩咐他們進去，得你起誓應許要賜給他們的地。

以色列人出埃及地後四十年，五月初一，亞倫祭司遵照耶和華的指示，上何珥山，死在那裏。
