其實卻是他在路上、在你們前面領路，為你們探覓紮營的地方，夜間用火、日間用雲、指示你們所應當行的路。

他們早已聽見永恆主你在這人民中間、永恆主你給人親眼相對地看見，你的雲彩停在他們上頭，你在他們前面領路、日間在雲柱中、而夜間在火柱中。

在立起帳幕那一天、有雲彩遮蓋着帳幕、就是法櫃的帳棚；晚上有像火之形狀的在帳幕上頭、直到早晨。老是這樣：白天有雲彩遮蓋着帳幕，夜間有火的形狀。雲彩幾時從帳幕上被收上去，以色列人幾時就往前行；雲彩在甚麼地方停住，以色列人就在甚麼地方紮營。以色列人照永恆主所吩咐的往前行，也照永恆主所吩咐的紮營；儘雲彩在帳幕上頭停住的日子，他們就都住營。就是雲彩在帳幕上頭停留了許多日子，以色列人也守永恆主所吩咐守的、都不往前行。有時候雲彩在帳幕上頭有幾天，他們也是照永恆主所吩咐的來住營，照永恆主所吩咐的往前行。有時候從晚上到早晨有雲彩；早晨雲彩一被收上去，他們就往前行；或者是白晝是黑夜都有雲彩，雲彩一被收上去，他們也就往前行。儘雲彩在帳幕上頭停留的時候、在那上頭停住的或是兩天、或是一個月，或是很多天，以色列人總是住營，不往前行；雲彩一被收上去，他們就往前行。他們照永恆主所吩咐的來紮營，也照永恆主所吩咐的往前行：他們謹守着永恆主所吩咐守的、都是照永恆主、由摩西經手所吩咐的。

每逢他們從營盤往前行的時候，日間總有永恆主的雲彩在他們上頭。

他白日用雲彩、整夜用火光、引導他們。

你還是大施憐憫，不把他們撇棄在曠野：日間雲柱還不離開他們，仍在路上領導他們；夜間火柱也不離開他們，仍然照亮他們所該走的路。

在以色列營前面行走的上帝使者、轉到他們的後邊去；雲柱也從他們前面轉去立在他們的後邊來，在埃及營和以色列營中間。一邊是雲是黑暗：一邊照亮着黑夜；終夜彼此不能相近。摩西向海伸手，永恆主便終夜用極強的東風使海退去；他使海成了旱地；水也裂開了。以色列人下海中、在乾地上走；水在他們左右兩邊就像牆一樣。埃及人直追趕着：法老所有的馬匹和車輛馬兵、都跟着以色列人下海中去。晨更時候，永恆主在火柱雲柱中往下眺望埃及人的營，就使埃及人的營潰亂了。

摩西進會棚的時候，雲柱就降下來，立在會棚的出入處，永恆主便同摩西說話。人民看見雲柱立在會棚的出入處，就都起來，各人在自己帳棚的出入處敬拜。

當時有雲彩遮蓋着會棚，永恆主的榮耀充滿着那帳幕。摩西不能進會棚，因為有雲彩如帳幕停在那上頭，永恆主的榮耀充滿着那帳幕。在他們所行的路站上、每逢雲彩從帳幕上被收上去，以色列人總往前行；雲彩若不被收上去，他們就不往前行，直等到雲彩被收上去的日子。因為在他們所行的路站上、日間總有永恆主的雲彩在帳幕上，夜間總有火在其中，在以色列全家眼前。

那時永恆主必顯現，日間藉着雲和煙，夜間藉着火燄之明亮顯現於錫安山之全地址，和他人民的會眾上，因為全「榮現」之上他本身就是天篷和亭子，白日可以使人得陰涼避炎熱，也可以作為避難所和隱匿處、以躲避狂風暴雨或霖雨。
