以掃聽了他父親的話，就大聲痛哭，對他父親說：「我父啊，求你也為我祝福！」

「哥拉汛哪，你有禍了！伯賽大啊，你有禍了！因為在你們中間所行的異能若行在推羅、西頓，他們早已披麻蒙灰悔改了。

約伯就起來，撕裂外袍，剃了頭，俯伏在地敬拜，

約拿進城，走了一天，宣告說：「再過四十天，尼尼微要傾覆了！」尼尼微人就信服神，宣告禁食，從最大的到最小的都穿上麻衣。這消息傳到尼尼微王那裏，他就從寶座起來，脫下朝服，披上麻布，坐在灰中。他叫人通告尼尼微全城，說：「王和大臣有令，人、畜、牛、羊都不可嘗任何東西，不可吃，也不可喝水。人與牲畜都要披上麻布，切切求告神。各人要回轉離開惡道，離棄自己掌中的殘暴。誰知道神也許會回心轉意，不發烈怒，使我們不致滅亡。」

因此我說：「不要看我，讓我痛哭吧！不要因我百姓的毀滅竭力安慰我。」

為此我要大聲哀號，赤身赤腳行走；我要呼號如野狗，哀鳴如鴕鳥。

耶和華的大日臨近，臨近而且甚快；那是耶和華日子的風聲，勇士必在那裏痛痛地哭號。

約書亞和以色列的長老就撕裂衣服，在耶和華的約櫃前臉伏於地，直到晚上。他們把灰撒在頭上。

約伯就坐在灰燼中，拿瓦片刮身體。

因此我撤回，在塵土和爐灰中懊悔。」

哈曼對亞哈隨魯王說：「有一民族散居在王國各省的民族中，與眾不同；他們的律例與萬民的律例不同，也不守王的律例，所以容留他們對王無益。王若以為好，請下諭旨滅絕他們，我就捐一萬他連得銀子交給管財政的人，納入王的府庫。」於是王從自己手上摘下戒指給猶太人的仇敵，亞甲人哈米大他的兒子哈曼。王對哈曼說：「這銀子賜給你，這民族也交給你，可以照你眼中看為好的待他們。」正月十三日，王的一些書記受召而來，照着哈曼一切所吩咐的，用各省的文字、各族的語言，奉亞哈隨魯王的名寫諭旨，又用王的戒指蓋印，傳給王的總督、各省的省長，以及各族的領袖。詔書由信差傳到王的各省，限令一日之內，就是在十二月，亞達月十三日，把所有的猶太人，無論老少婦女孩子，全然剪除，殺戮滅絕，並搶奪他們的財產。

這豈是我所要的禁食，為人所用以刻苦己心的日子嗎？我難道只是叫人如蘆葦般低頭，鋪上麻布和灰燼嗎？你能稱此為禁食，為耶和華所悅納的日子嗎？
