我转眼又看到日光之下：快跑的未必赛赢，勇士未必战胜，有智慧的未必得粮食，有悟性的未必得财富，明智者未必得恩惠；因为时机和机遇胜过一切。

I have seen something else under the sun: The race is not to the swift or the battle to the strong, nor does food come to the wise or wealth to the brilliant or favor to the learned; but time and chance happen to them all.

Here’s something else I’ve seen on this earth. Races aren’t always won by those who run fast. Battles aren’t always won by those who are strong. Wise people don’t always have plenty of food. Clever people aren’t always wealthy. Those who have learned a lot aren’t always successful. God controls the timing of every event. He also controls how things turn out.

Again I saw that under the sun the race is not to the swift, nor the battle to the strong, nor bread to the wise, nor riches to the intelligent, nor favor to those with knowledge, but time and chance happen to them all.

I have observed something else under the sun. The fastest runner doesn’t always win the race, and the strongest warrior doesn’t always win the battle. The wise sometimes go hungry, and the skillful are not necessarily wealthy. And those who are educated don’t always lead successful lives. It is all decided by chance, by being in the right place at the right time.

Again I saw under the sun that the race is not to the swift, or the battle to the strong, or bread to the wise, or riches to the discerning, or favor to the skillful; rather, time and chance happen to all of them.

This is what the Lord says:“ Let not the wise boast of their wisdom or the strong boast of their strength or the rich boast of their riches, (niv)

There is no wisdom, no insight, no plan that can succeed against the Lord.The horse is made ready for the day of battle, but victory rests with the Lord. (niv)

Who can speak and have it happen if the Lord has not decreed it?Is it not from the mouth of the Most High that both calamities and good things come? (niv)

The lowly he sets on high, and those who mourn are lifted to safety.He thwarts the plans of the crafty, so that their hands achieve no success.He catches the wise in their craftiness, and the schemes of the wily are swept away.Darkness comes upon them in the daytime; at noon they grope as in the night. (niv)

The swift will not escape, the strong will not muster their strength, and the warrior will not save his life.The archer will not stand his ground, the fleet-footed soldier will not get away, and the horseman will not save his life.Even the bravest warriors will flee naked on that day,” declares the Lord. (niv)

I said to myself,“ God will bring into judgment both the righteous and the wicked, for there will be a time for every activity, a time to judge every deed.” (niv)

He said:“ Listen, King Jehoshaphat and all who live in Judah and Jerusalem! This is what the Lord says to you:‘ Do not be afraid or discouraged because of this vast army. For the battle is not yours, but God’s. (niv)

I know that everything God does will endure forever; nothing can be added to it and nothing taken from it. God does it so that people will fear him. (niv)

“ The swift cannot flee nor the strong escape. In the north by the River Euphrates they stumble and fall. (niv)

No king is saved by the size of his army; no warrior escapes by his great strength.A horse is a vain hope for deliverance; despite all its great strength it cannot save. (niv)

His pleasure is not in the strength of the horse, nor his delight in the legs of the warrior;the Lord delights in those who fear him, who put their hope in his unfailing love. (niv)

The wise have eyes in their heads, while the fool walks in the darkness; but I came to realize that the same fate overtakes them both.Then I said to myself,“ The fate of the fool will overtake me also. What then do I gain by being wise?” I said to myself,“ This too is meaningless.” (niv)

And I saw that all toil and all achievement spring from one person’s envy of another. This too is meaningless, a chasing after the wind. (niv)

When Ahithophel saw that his advice had not been followed, he saddled his donkey and set out for his house in his hometown. He put his house in order and then hanged himself. So he died and was buried in his father’s tomb. (niv)

Absalom and all the men of Israel said,“ The advice of Hushai the Arkite is better than that of Ahithophel.” For the Lord had determined to frustrate the good advice of Ahithophel in order to bring disaster on Absalom. (niv)

Again I looked and saw all the oppression that was taking place under the sun: I saw the tears of the oppressed— and they have no comforter; power was on the side of their oppressors— and they have no comforter. (niv)

Then I turned my thoughts to consider wisdom, and also madness and folly. What more can the king’s successor do than what has already been done? (niv)

“ Do not keep talking so proudly or let your mouth speak such arrogance, for the Lord is a God who knows, and by him deeds are weighed.“ The bows of the warriors are broken, but those who stumbled are armed with strength.Those who were full hire themselves out for food, but those who were hungry are hungry no more. She who was barren has borne seven children, but she who has had many sons pines away.“ The Lord brings death and makes alive; he brings down to the grave and raises up.The Lord sends poverty and wealth; he humbles and he exalts.He raises the poor from the dust and lifts the needy from the ash heap; he seats them with princes and has them inherit a throne of honor.“ For the foundations of the earth are the Lord’s; on them he has set the world.He will guard the feet of his faithful servants, but the wicked will be silenced in the place of darkness.“ It is not by strength that one prevails;those who oppose the Lord will be broken. The Most High will thunder from heaven; the Lord will judge the ends of the earth.“ He will give strength to his king and exalt the horn of his anointed.” (niv)

In him we were also chosen, having been predestined according to the plan of him who works out everything in conformity with the purpose of his will, (niv)

Therefore pride is their necklace; they clothe themselves with violence.From their callous hearts comes iniquity; their evil imaginations have no limits. (niv)

But remember the Lord your God, for it is he who gives you the ability to produce wealth, and so confirms his covenant, which he swore to your ancestors, as it is today. (niv)

Consider what God has done: Who can straighten what he has made crooked? (niv)

And you will again see the distinction between the righteous and the wicked, between those who serve God and those who do not. (niv)

But if he remains silent, who can condemn him? If he hides his face, who can see him? Yet he is over individual and nation alike, (niv)

All the peoples of the earth are regarded as nothing. He does as he pleases with the powers of heaven and the peoples of the earth. No one can hold back his hand or say to him:“ What have you done?” (niv)

The three sons of Zeruiah were there: Joab, Abishai and Asahel. Now Asahel was as fleet-footed as a wild gazelle.He chased Abner, turning neither to the right nor to the left as he pursued him.Abner looked behind him and asked,“ Is that you, Asahel?”“ It is,” he answered.Then Abner said to him,“ Turn aside to the right or to the left; take on one of the young men and strip him of his weapons.” But Asahel would not stop chasing him.Again Abner warned Asahel,“ Stop chasing me! Why should I strike you down? How could I look your brother Joab in the face?”But Asahel refused to give up the pursuit; so Abner thrust the butt of his spear into Asahel’s stomach, and the spear came out through his back. He fell there and died on the spot. And every man stopped when he came to the place where Asahel had fallen and died. (niv)

So David triumphed over the Philistine with a sling and a stone; without a sword in his hand he struck down the Philistine and killed him. (niv)
